CALVERT -- Chris Calvert, 57, died Sunday, January 14, 2007 after a 7-year battle with aplastic anemia. Chris is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jackie; father, Alex; brother, Lee; and sons, Sabin and Paul. Chris had a joy of life and took what his offered with infectious enthusiasm. He enjoyed outdoor activities, long hikes in the mountains, backpacking with his family, marathon running, cycling, and skiing. He always enjoyed a challenge, and encouraged his family and friends to live their lives fully. Chris had a passion for computers and technology, purchasing one of the first home computers available in the 1970s, and taught himself how it worked. He had a talent for trouble-shooting computer problems, and worked as a systems analyst at local businesses and Sandia National Labs for many years. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and optimism in the face of many challenges.

COFFEY -- Charles E. Coffey, age 79 and a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, died Friday January 12, 2007 following an illness. Mr. Coffey is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue Coffey; one daughter, Cheryl Coffey; one son, Wayne Coffey and his wife, Marilyn, all of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Douglas and Kyle Coffey; one brother, Ralph Coffey and his wife, Wanda of Oklahoma City, OK; one sister-in-law, Mary E. Nelson and her husband, Bill of Bothell, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Charles was employed with Nationwide Papers for 38 years, a Navy Veteran and a member of Holiday Bowl Senior Men's Bowling League. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in the Main Chapel of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors with Pastor Alan Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with Norm Smith, John Lindsey, Richard Shovelin, Wayne Coffey, Doug Coffey, and Kyle Coffey serving as casket bearers. DEKKER -- Arthur W. Dekker (Art) a lifelong resident of New Mexico, was born on October 3, 1922 and passed away on January 13, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and loving wife of 52 years, Marcella. Survivors include his daughter Diane Hart; and grandchildren Marcy, Patrick and Amanda; Amanda's children Liam and Freja Art's two great-grandchildren; son Dale, wife Diane and grandchildren Travis, Paige and Luke; son David, wife Judi, and grandchildren Joe and Jill; son Dean and wife Giang; brother John and his wife Hannah. The family would also like to recognize his special friendship with Paul C. House that began when Art was in kindergarten and Beverly House-Wilson, his daughter, who so kindly provided assistance and support to our father over the past several years. Art grew up in Roswell, New Mexico and graduated from Roswell High School in 1940, where he was a four sport athlete. He attended the University of Kansas before induction into the Army Air Corps. His service included overseas duty in the Marianas Islands of Tinian, Saipan and Guam and the Island of Iwo Jima. Art also served in the Korean War with the USAFSS stationed at Kelly Field, Texas, retiring as a Major USAF Res. Art graduated from KU in 1948 with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering and was registered as an Architect and a Professional Engineer in New Mexico for over 50 years. Many (over 1000) buildings and other structures were designed, primarily in New Mexico during those years. Art was particularly proud of his body of church work, including among others the First Presbyterian Churches in Albuquerque and Grants, the Christian Reformed Churches in Gallup, Crownpoint and Fort Wingate Arizona and the First Methodist Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. He was a former member of the Sigma Chi, the Masonic bodies of the Ballut Abyad Shrine, American Institute of Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, Professional Engineering Society, Monte Vista Christian and the Tennis Club of Albuquerque. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16th at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE with the Dr. Michelle Tatlock officiating. Committal of cremains will take place at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. ESCOBEDO -- Joaquin Escobedo, 76, lifetime resident of Illescas San Luis Potosi Mexico, and Albuquerque, was called to the Lord on January 13, 2007. Joaquin was preceded in death by his father and mother, Pablo and Isabel Escobedo of Mexico. Joaquin is survived by sons, Rogelio, Mario, Omar, Uriel, and Joel Escobedo. Also survived by daughters, Lupe, Irma, Angelica, Ormisa, Elsa, Eliseda, and Nora Escobedo; along with numerous great-grandchildren and grandchildren. EXON -- Marlys Miller Exon, 73, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at Simple Pleasures Senior Care after an extended illness. The former Marlys Miller was born September 8, 1933, in Geneseo, IL, the daughter of Herbert and Mary (Haugh) Miller. She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1951. On August 13, 1960, she married Dr. Guy R. Exon in Anaheim, CA. Marlys was an administrative secretary for Singer Business Machines from 1970-1976 and then for Digital Equipment Corporation from 1976 until she retired in 1985. She has since spent many years volunteering in several capacities. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49, American Ex-Prisoners of War, the VFW Auxiliary 401, Adah Chapter No.5, OES, Daughters of the Nile, and was a regular volunteer at the VA Hospital in Albuquerque. She is a national officer of Eight and Forty, a subsidiary of the American Legion Auxiliary. Marlys was a members of the Faith Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. She loved volunteering and spending time with her many many friends. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Mary Miller of Geneseo, IL; brother-in-law, L.R. "Butch" DeBlieck of Burlington, IA; and several nieces and nephews, who were very special to her. JOHNSON -- Trudie Lee Johnson, 56, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1979, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2007. Trudie was born August 4, 1950 the daughter of Robert and Mary Katherine Swan Hocking in Canton, Ohio, but was raised in Louisville, Ohio. Trudie was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan; worked at steel mills in Pittsburgh; after moving to New Mexico, she worked at the Bernalillo County Jail and Diamond Shamrock. She loved her family, her horse Muffin, and her dogs, Lulu and Zilah. Trudie is survived by her mother, Mary Katherine Swan of Corrales, NM; daughter, Tanika Dawn White of Rio Rancho, NM; son, Vernon Maurice Ford, Jr. of Rio Rancho, NM; granddaughter, Raven Cheyenne White of Rio Rancho, NM; two sisters, Margot Jean Steadman and husband Bill of Corrales, NM and Cindy Toney and family of Frederick, MD; and nephew, Will Steadman and family of Corrales, NM. LASKAR -- Basil K."Bill" Laskar, 85, passed away January 13, 2007 at home with his family at his side. He was born April 18, 1921 in Chicago, IL of Greek immigrants and became a permanent resident of Albuquerque in the early 1930s. Bill started an early career as an aircraft mechanic at the old Oxnard Field in Albuquerque and continued as a civilian aircraft mechanic throughout WWII at Albuquerque's Kirtland Field. After the war, Bill worked as a photographer for the Albuquerque Journal/Tribune and had his own photo shop (Laskar Photos) in the late 1940s and early 50s. In 1953 he began work for Sandia National Laboratories as a photographer and retired as the Sandia Lab News photographer in 1980. His photographs have appeared in various magazines including Life and National Geographic. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Olga Pouls. Bill's passions in life included planes, trains, automobiles and music. He was a drummer in numerous Jazz/Dixieland bands in Albuquerque in the 1950s and '60s. He was a member of numerous organizations including the Commemorative Air Force (Confederate Air Force), and the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Emma Laskar; his sister, Helen Campbell; his son, George Laskar and wife, Barbara; his daughter, Vicki Langwell and husband, Gerry; his son, Charles Laskar and wife, Thomasina; his grandchildren, Colin, Tommy, Nick, Davina, Jerry Joe; and his great-grandchildren Cohen and Jax. MERAZ -- Christina A. Encinias-Meraz, 55, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on January 14, 2007. Christina is the beloved mother to Mark Encinias and wife, April, Natalie Meraz and fiance, Jorge Duenas and Greg Meraz. Christina is also survived by her five sisters, Angie Wright and husband, James of Memphis TN., Louise Cline, Trinnie Larranaga, Katy Gonzales and husband, Morris and Mary Jean Gravestock of Pueblo, CO; one brother, Manuel Encinias; four grandchildren, Christina, Marcus, Geraldine, and Arriana; sister-in-law, Luz Nevarez; many other in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Christina was a member of the Catholic Church. MONTOYA -- Agnes "Nana Nez" Montoya went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 2007 at the age of 86. She is survived by her two sons, Arnold Marquez and wife, Monica, and Roy Marquez; and by her daughter, Theresa Lovato and husband, Mike. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Michele, Leann, Gibby, Arnold Jr., Jerome, Adam, Matthew, and Josh; and by her 15 great-grandchildren, Chanelle, Joseph, Jacob, A.J., Beija, Chaunte, James, Miguel, Jordan, Alexandra, Alicia Moya, Ciara, Marisa, Alicia Marquez, and Arnold III. She will be deeply missed by all. PHILLIPS -- Orlan Nathan Phillips, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2007. Nathan was born on March 21, 1922. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Phillips; children, Nathan and wife, Vivian Phillips, and Agata Barteau, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Nathan (Melanie) Phillips, Melinda (Adam) Robrahn, Judy (Jason) Baskerville; Matthew Radley; great-grandson, Caleb Joel Robrahn. He is also survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews. When WWII rang its bell, Dad answered the call. He served with the 76th Recon Division as an M-8 armored car driver. He was at the Battle of the Bulge, and he was there when U.S. forces crossed the Rhine into Germany. He retired in 1982 from ABF Trucking. He was a member of Teamsters Local #492, Moose Lodge #1517, and a life member of VFW Post 401. Services will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd., NE. ROEHRIG -- Charles E Roehrig, was born January 7, 1923, in Louisville, KY. He died January 13, 2007, in Albuquerque, NM, surrounded by his family. On May 23, 1946, he married his sweetheart Frances Jo (Dils) Roehrig in Belen, NM. He is survived by his sons, Donnie of Rutheron, NM; Steve and wife Mary of Edgewood, NM; grandson Nate and wife Chamisa, and great-grandson Cole, all of Albuquerque; granddaughters Nicole of Albuquerque and Jessica currently in South Korea; a special nephew, Louis Huning and family of Los Lunas, NM; and brother, William Roehrig and wife Helen of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by many other loving relatives and friends. Charles was a WWII veteran, having served his country proudly in the European Theatre. He retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1981 and moved to Rutheron, NM, to build his dream home in the mountains, surrounded by the beauty of God's nature and animals. He enjoyed time spent camping, hunting, and fishing, and the family's travels to see the world. Charles will be remembered in two services officiated by Rev. STERLING -- Malcolm Archer Sterling, 84, died early Friday, January 12, 2007. Eldest of three sons born to Leslie and Ethel Archer Sterling in Canastota, NY, June 21, 1922, Malcolm joined the Army Air Corps, serving in the 29th Fighter Squadron during WWII. As a radio operator, he was studying a new secret radio wave called FM when the war ended in 1945. Malcolm used the GI Bill to complete degrees in music and in education. In his professional life, he worked as a high school English and Drama teacher, a guidance counselor, and a New Mexico DVR disability adjudicator. He was a strong advocate of higher education who successfully found scholarships for students who couldn't afford college. While working for New Mexico DVR, he enjoyed the challenge of helping disabled people qualify for benefits. In addition, he spent a few memorable summers as a U.S. Park Ranger at Aztec Ruins and Chaco Canyon. In 1965 he was certified as a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. As a husband and father, he instilled a love of reading, music, and nature in all his children, encouraging them to follow their interests. Blessed to be loved by two special women, Malcolm is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Wanda M. Sterling, stepson Kent Nicholson and wife Christine, stepdaughter Cheryl Hicks and husband Don, and stepson Daniel Nicholson; step-grandchildren: Debbie Rembelski and husband Phil, John Nicholson and wife Robin, Ron Hicks and wife Holly, Christie Hicks, Kristofer Douglas, Wanda Nicholson and her husband, Daniel "Chi" Nicholson and six great-grandchildren. Malcolm was predeceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Cecile Burton Sterling. He will be greatly missed by his seven children: daughter Terrie Sterling and husband Mike Rowan, daughter Cheela Renouard and husband Scott, son Brian Sterling and wife Mary Dolores, son Stephen Sterling and wife Terry, daughter Mara Browning and husband John, son Craig Sterling and wife Frances, and daughter Karla Sterling; seven grandchildren: Eric Renouard and wife Connie, Keith Renouard and wife Mary, Morgan Sterling, Amber Sterling, Warren Sterling, Tatum Sterling-Oerth, Robert Browning, and five great-grandchildren. STOCKTON -- Gene Stockton, a lifelong Colfax County, New Mexico rancher and hay farmer who helped pioneer a new crossbreeding technique for beef cattle, died January 12 in Albuquerque. He was 87 and died of heart failure. Stockton and his wife, Margoree, who survives him, raised cattle and grew hay on a ranch alongside the Canadian River south of Raton. They began married life on the ranch in 1943 and worked together running it for the next 62 years, before moving to Albuquerque in 2005. During the 1950s, Stockton raised registered Hereford cattle. He sold the best animals to other registered Hereford breeders. The remainder, destined for the dinner table, went to cattle feeders. In the 1960s, meatpackers turned away from the small, blocky Hereford feeder calves and began paying a premium for larger calves produced by other breeds, like Charolais cattle, originally imported from France. Stockton recounted how he solved this cash flow dilemma in a video history produced by his older son in 1999. "It was 1968 and I had this bunch of Herefords, but nobody wanted Herefords any more. I read something about how some people were crossbreeding Charolais bulls with Hereford cows. One day I heard from a friend that his brother in Texas had bought this whole herd of Charolais cows and bulls and that he was selling the bulls. He said there were some really good bulls in the bunch. So I thought about it and called him and said I would take three of those bulls. The day they showed up, they were in one of those big open flatbed trailers with no roof and here were these giant bulls looking out over the stock racks. I said to myself, 'My God! What have I done?" "Boy, did I get criticized. 'You've lost your mind. You've gone crazy,' and all that. But the first calves those bulls produced weighed a hundred pounds more than the others when they were weaned". Stockton also raised both grass and alfalfa hay, most of which he fed to his cattle, but each year he set aside some of the choicest hay to sell to neighbors. Horse owners particularly sought his alfalfa. Bowing to age - he was 80 - and at his wife's insistence that he slow down, Stockton sold his cow herd in 1999. However, for sentimental reasons, he kept a few of the oldest cows, which his dubbed the "museum cows." With little fanfare, he also kept a bull. Six years later, when Stockton and his wife left the ranch to be nearer to family members in Albuquerque, the museum cows had become a sizeable "stealth herd." Stockton's grandfather and great uncle first settled alongside the Canadian in 1867. They raised cattle in Texas, and like other, more famous Texas ranchers and cowboys, they began trailing cattle to burgeoning markets that sprang up in the East after the Civil War. While many Texans trailed cattle north into Kansas, the Stocktons went west into the New Mexico territory to the Pecos River. From there, they proceeded north up the Pecos, jumped over to the Canadian and followed it to the Raton area, where they established themselves. Stockton's father, A. Claude Stockton, was born near Raton in 1873. He and his two younger brothers, Clarence and Frank, formed the Stockton Cattle Company, which raised cattle and also operated a butcher shop in Raton. The company split up in the 1930s, but at one point it had a herd of approximately 1,000 mother cows. Stockton is survived by his wife, Margoree, of Albuquerque; two sons, Bruce, of Albuquerque, and Bill of Milford, NJ; two grandchildren, Cinnamon Everheart of Los Lunas and Tomas Stockton of Albuquerque; and a great-grandchild, Greyson Everheart of Los Lunas. He was preceded in death by his parents, A. Claude Stockton and Nell Coates Stockton; by his older brother, Alvin; and a younger sister, Laura May; and by a grandchild, Kevin Stockton. TAYLOR -- Everett M. "Curly" Taylor, 90, born August 23, 1916 in Green Ridge, MD, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2007 at his home with his family by his side. Curly worked for the Corp of Engineers for more than 35 years on projects throughout the country. As an Army Sergeant at the end of World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos. Curly spent more than a decade working for the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base and from 1958 to 1971 he was the Comptroller for the Defense Atomic Support Agency Field Command. During his long career in public service, he was awarded The Distinguished Meritorious Service Award and The Exceptional Civilian Service Medal. After his retirement from the Civil Service, Curly worked for Kinney Brick Company from 1972 to 1980 as Comptroller. He was preceded in death by his first wife Pauline Francis Taylor; his youngest son Everett M. Taylor II; and his great grand daughter Claire Taylor Pollack. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Carolyn; his eldest son Tom Taylor and wife Karen; son Dick Taylor and stepson Bill Murphy and wife Helga; by his grandchildren Steve Sheppard and wife Denise; Carol Murphy, Steve Taylor, Lisa Taylor Pollack and husband Dave; Kim Murphy, E.M. Curly was known for his sense of humor, was an avid golfer and leaves many friends in New Mexico. Curly was a kind, gentle and generous man who will be greatly missed. TOOHEY -- Michael (Mike) J. Toohey, 74, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Sunday, January 14, 2007. He is survived by his loving and dear wife of 53 years, Bennita; children, Timothy Toohey of Albuquerque, Kevin Toohey and wife, Mitzi, of San Antonio, TX, and Laura Toohey Ramirez of Spokane,WA; four grandchildren; mother, Marcella Toohey of Albuquerque; brother, Jim Toohey and wife, Marva, of Chagrin Falls, OH; and several other relatives and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Michael J. Toohey, Sr. He was born on February 4, 1932 in Spalding, Nebraska and served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955, during the Korean Conflict. All of his working career, Mike was in the retail clothing and Western Wear business. He began during high school in Hastings, NE and also worked in Rapid City, SD and Newcastle, WY. In Albuquerque, Mike was a part owner and Vice-President of Cooper's, Inc. and Western Warehouse, and was well respected within the Western Wear Industry. In Mike's words, "I was a decent bridge player, average bowler and a bad golfer." He was a loving husband, father, son, and brother and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A Prayer Service will be held at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. TRUJILLO -- Delfina C. Trujillo, 88, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 12, 2007 in Grants, NM surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 11, 1918 in San Marcial, NM to James and Barbarita (Padilla) Carmody. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike A. Trujillo; her children: Josefita Gonzales, Barbara C. Trujillo, Barbara A. Trujillo, and Baby Boy Trujillo; brother, James Carmody Jr.; sisters: Juanita Apodaca and Margarita Chavez; and a great-grandson, Cameron. Delfina is survived by four sons: Tony Gonzales and wife, Margie of Indio, CA; Michael Trujillo and wife, Eunice of Alamogordo, NM; James Trujillo and wife, Frances of Albuquerque, NM; and Christopher Trujillo and wife, Charmain of Albuquerque; two daughters: Patricia Trujillo Trisler of Grants, NM; and Jeanette Bustamante and husband, Eddie of Albuquerque; 21 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at San Miguel Catholic Church in Socorro. Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at San Miguel with Father John C. Daniel as Celebrant. Burial will be in the San Miguel Cemetery. Pallbearers are Adam Trujillo, Armando Gonzales, Matthew Bustamante, Chris Trujillo Jr., Michael Trisler II, and Rudy Chavez. Honorary Pallbearers are Delfina's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
