MASON -- Wiff (Elizabeth May) Mason, native of Santa Maria, California, and resident of Albuquerque since 1999, died of a stroke on November 14, 2006, in Alabama while cruising onboard the Delta Queen riverboat. She was born in Santa Maria on August 28, 1921, to Fred Lester and Elizabeth Oakley May, attended U.C. Berkely and graduated with a degree in English and a teaching credential. She then spent a good portion of her life as a homemaker, wife and mother of five, often being her husband's "right hand" on the household projects that always arose in each of the many houses the family occupied over the years. Wiff traveled widely and lived in many places, including California, Alaska, Libya, and Iran. After her husband retired, they built their own home in San Anselmo, California, where they lived until moving to Albuquerque. They enjoyed new adventures and traveled extensively around the world and across the United States. Wiff's major interests other than her family were transcribing Braille, weaving, and bridge. She was fascinated by the computer and worked to master it, including being among the first to use it for Braille transcription. She always loved traveling and took many trips every year, some for the new experiences and some to just relax. Wiff was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend of 59 years, Rocky (Robert) Mason and their son, Paul. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Jim (Cindy), Janet (Becky Page), Barbara (Pam Pam Gaddies), and Beth (Helen D'Esposito) Mason; as well as her grandchildren, Chris, Chrissy, Matt, Jake, Andy, Sarah, Sonya, Sam, Rachel, Isabel and Paula; and great-grandchildren Tara, Jeff, Ashley, Lexus, McKenna, Tyler, Braxton, Zachery, and Spencer. She was deeply loved and appreciated for the example she set of going after happiness and living the very best life possible. We will miss her strength, her love, and her presence as the center of our family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2006, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle Blvd. N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico.

ZAVICHAS -- James "Jim" C. Zavichas, born December 9, 1931 in Oklahoma City, OK, passed on to be with his Lord Sunday, December 10, 2006. He is survived by three children, Becky Zavichas, Nancy Zavichas-Shiver, and Jimmy Zavichas; four grandchildren, Stephanie Narvaez, Jamey Shiver, Jake Shiver, and Cameron Zavichas; two great-grandchildren, Cody Narvaez and Tyler Narvaez; two sisters, Penny Zavichas and Connie Zavichas-Wells; nephews, Chris Daskos and Mike Wells of Pueblo, CO; as well as numerous cousins in the United States and Greece. Mr. Zavichas was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and parents, Chris and Joan Zavichas. A loving and devoted husband, dad, brother, and friend he will be greatly missed in his passing but remembered in every breath for his humor, wisdom and strength. He was born at home in Oklahoma City to parents of immigrant Greek decent. Moving with his family to Pueblo, CO in his youth, he grew up in the Greek Community with sisters, Penny and Connie and many good friends and family. He graduated from Central High School in 1950 and married Barbara in 1951. Mr. Zavichas served his country as a Marine during the Korean War. His service was honorable and proudly given. Upon his discharge, he and Barbara remained in Pueblo until moving his immediate family to Albuquerque in 1964. He went to work for The American Furniture Company in April of 1964. Mr. Zavichas retired from over 40 years of dedicated employment just a few months prior to his passing. He enjoyed his workdays and truly valued his friends and associates and spoke often and respectfully of his American Furniture family. Mr. Zavichas was willing to share his tremendous knowledge of the retail business and had a strong dedication to those he worked for and with. His marriage to Barbara of 54 years, the raising of his three children, and having a big part in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren always came before any personal desires or needs. His presence and quiet devotion provided a godly strength in the leadership of his family. His commitment to the interest of his children and their children will be sweetly remembered as he always made sure to just be "Pops" and allow the commotion and fun and all that came along with being a close family take it's path. His wisdom and knowledge surpassed the ancients and heaven has gained an angel of unbelievable worth. He loved to read, play golf and sit on the porch with the grand- and great-grandchildren. Mr. Zavichas loved people and never met a stranger. He fought a long and hard battle against cancer. The challenges due to his illness were taxing, yet he never complained nor did he ever think to quit the fight. His strength will be remembered. The Zavichas children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, and nephews wish to honor this blessed Christmas season by asking his friends and family to first, celebrate this joyous holiday with all of those they love, and to then join the family Saturday, December 30, 2006, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Mr. Zavichas' honor to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, Albuquerque, NM 87111.
