BACHECHI -- Arthur L. Bachechi passed away on November 29, 2006. He was born in Albuquerque on September 14, 1923. He was a lifelong resident of the city, and a proud WWII Veteran. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean, and his sister, Mae. Survivors are his children, Arthur Jr. and wife, Betsy of Edgewood, Barbara Renfro and husband, Steve of Albuquerque, Linda Harless and husband, Randy of Los Lunas, and Paul Bachechi of Los Lunas; siblings, Orie Bachechi of Albuquerque, Lillian Arrighetti of Albuquerque, and Carlina Morrelli of Plano, TX; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church 619 Copper NW, Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. Interment at the Santa Fe National Cemetary will follow at a later date.

BALCOMB -- Margaret Van Deurs Calvin Balcomb, 76, a beautiful and vibrant wife, adored mother, dear friend, and loving grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2006 surrounded by her family. Peggy died as she lived, with grace, composure and inner strength, a role model for us all. She was born in Silver City on October 15, 1930, the daughter of Dr. Ross R. Calvin and Grace Van Deurs Hance. She was educated in Silver City and Clovis. She studied at the University of New Mexico where she met Edward Vail Balcomb, to whom she was married for more than 56 years. The two of them were active in New Mexico politics and culture, avid skiers, tennis players, whitewater rafters and world travelers. Peggy and Ed enjoyed a wide circle of friends. Her wit, personality and radiant smile will be missed. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Rodney P. Calvin. Peggy is survived by her husband and devoted partner, Ed; daughters, Dr. Teresa Vail Balcomb and husband, Dr. Jim Tryon; Charlotte Balcomb Lane and husband, Peter Lane; grandchildren, Elyce Balcomb Tryon and Connor Boyle Tryon, and Ansel Edward Lane and Spencer Vail Lane. She is also survived by her nephews, John R. Calvin and wife, Christina; Edward Calvin and wife, Kristie of Denver; and niece, Cynthia Calvin and husband, Mac MacShane of Denver; as well as many dear relatives. BESTGEN -- WALTER E. Col. Walter E. Bestgen, a member of the Greatest Generation, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2006. A native of Wichita, KS, Walter served his country as a P-38 pilot in North Africa. After the war, he returned home and married the spirited Viola Aegerter. In their 63 years of marriage, Walter and Viola shared their love of adventure, travel and camping with their family. Nothing made him happier than a long day of motorcycling or waterskiing followed by a night of talking and joking around the campfire. Walter considered his greatest accomplishment to be his family, including his three children and six grandchildren. He always had the time and patience to listen to any real or perceived crisis, and would dispense the perfect hug or advice for any occasion. He leaves us a legacy of laughter, love and compassion. CERVINI -- Gloria Ann Cervini, 70 and a resident of Rio Rancho since 1979, died November 23, 2006. She is survived by her husband, Andrew J. Cervini. Born in the Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of Anthony Albero and Angelina Gariola Albero. She had worked as a cafeteria manager for Albuquerque Public Schools before retiring. The loving wife, mother and grandmother was a member of the American Legion Post 118 Ladies Auxiliary in Rio Rancho. Along with her husband, survivors are: her sons, Andrew L. Cervini and his wife, Darlene and Anthony Cervini, all of Rio Rancho, and Chris Cervini and his wife, Georgette of Albuquerque; her sister, Marjorie Piteo of Rio Rancho; and grandchildren, Felicia Cervini of Shoreham, NY, Shayna Cervini of Rio Rancho and Simon Cervini of Albuquerque. Memorial Service and Mass will be Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho. CHAVEZ -- Maria Del Carmen "Cocoy", born October 31, 1949, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2006 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Esperanza Reyna; brother, Fernando Reyna; mother-in-law, Mary D. Chavez and sister-in-law, Laura Trujillo. She is survived by her loving husband Charles D. Chavez; sons, Charles D. Chavez II and Bernadette A. Moya, Candelario F. Chavez and Charmaine I. Gonzalez; stepchildren, Raymond, Roberta, Patricia, Andrew, Christopher and Angela; father-in-law, Candelario G. Chavez; sisters; Maria Louisa, Goya, Vicky and Lilly Reyna; brother-in-law, Manuel D. Chavez and Cindy Trujillo; grandchildren, Ariel, Charlene, Cheyanne, Charles III, and Shantel. Cocoy was employed by The University of New Mexico for 22 Years. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances. Cocoy was famous for her ability to feed all who came to enjoy her great cooking, especially her famous tamales. Cremation has taken place and a Rosary will be recited on Friday December 1, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. DECKER -- Bernice Gehrke McHale Decker was born May 12, 1908 and passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2006. In 1929 she graduated from the University of Michigan where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After teaching English and Journalism for several years in Hastings, MI, she moved to Mt. Pleasant, MI, with her late husband, Mendal Decker. In recent years she has made her home in Albuquerque. She is survived by daughters, Diane Sloves and husband, Matthew, and Linda Caprio and husband, Al; grandsons, Douglas Bailey and wife, Kathy, John Bailey and wife, Deborah, David Sloves and wife, Pamela, Jonathan Sloves and wife, Dianna, and Andrew Sloves and wife, Erin; 12 great-grandchildren; Lucas, Nicole, and Kendall Bailey, Miranda and Ryan Bailey, Alexandra and Stephanie Sloves, Jacqueline and Griffin Sloves, Claudia, Jason, and Remy Sloves. EIDSCHUN -- Mable E. Eidschun, age 81, went to be with her Lord and her loving husband of 60 years, Johnnie, on Tuesday, November 28, 2006. She was born and raised in McCurtain, OK. A longtime resident of Albuquerque, Mable was devoted to God, her family and her church. She is survived by her children, Wanda Guthrie, Melba Clarke, Harold Eidschun, Keith Eidschun and wife, Susie; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters; other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. GLIESMAN -- Robert Joseph Gliesman, 87, of Silver City, passed away in Gila Regional Medical Center Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday December 4, 2006 at Bright Funeral Home with Elder Dwight Simpson officiating. Interment will full Military Honors by American Legion Post #18 and VFW Post #3347 will be at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. Mr. Gliesman was born August 22, 1919 in Cambridge, MA. He was the son of William P. and Grace (Clark) Gliesman. He married Gladys Faye Baughman July 11, 1958 in St. Johns, AZ. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Gladys; two step-daughters, Vesta Hobbs of Norton, KS; Edna Whitley of Silver City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dotty Clary of Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. Mr. Gliesman attended grammar school and vocational school in Cambridge, MA. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1937-1939. In 1939 he joined the Coast Guard, when World War II started in 1941, the U. S. Navy took over the Coast Guard and he continued to sere in the Navy aboard the USS Cavalier. In 1948-1949 he worked with Republic Steel in Cleveland, OH. From 1949 to 1955 He worked for Civil service at the National Aeronautics Research Labs, still in Cleveland, OH, where he was a Lab Technician Mechanic. Moving to Albuquerque in 1956 he worked as a plumber and steam fitter at Kirkland Air Force Base for ten years and at Sandia Labs for eight year. He finished up his Civil Service by working for the Veteran's Administration and retired in 1976. After living in the Los Alamos mountains in a cabin for about three years, they moved to Los Lunas and he began working again, this time for the Los Lunas Consolidated Schools for about seven years doing general maintenance, mainly electrical and installations. They lived in Deming, Mimbres, and Hurley, NM and then came to Silver City in 1998. Mr. Gliesman was a baptized member of the Presbyterian Church and very active in the American Legion Post #18 and supported the Disabled American Veterans. GONZALES -- DIEGO F. In Loving Memory of Diego F. Gonzales December 3, 1947 - December 1, 2003 It's been 3 years since you've been gone and it just gets harder every day without you. GWINN -- Mark P. Gwinn Sr., born January 23, 1919, a lifelong resident of Belen, NM passed away in Phoenix, AZ on November 25, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, June Gwinn; one son, Mark P. Gwinn Jr. and his wife, Carolyn of Belen, NM; two grandchildren, Tina Dziuk and James Johnston and wife, Jessica; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alec, Bresia, Brooklyn, and Jay. He is also survived by one daughter, Martina Jane Gwinn of Edgewood, NM; and two sisters, Gladys Dixon of Topeka, KS and Virginia Richardson of Medford, OR. Mark was a conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad for forty-four years. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lodge 56 and a 32nd degree Mason. During World War II he served in the U.S. Airforce. He loved nature and enjoyed spending time fishing and gardening. He loved his family and will be missed by those that knew him. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ. There will be a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on December 15, 2006 at the Masonic Hall in Belen, NM.

HAVERLAND -- JOHN BERNARD The Very Reverend John Bernard Haverland, Dean Emeritus, Episcopal Cathedral of St. John, Executive to the Bishop of the Diocese of the Rio Grande, 84, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, November 25, 2006. He is survived by Barbara Clark; his children, Joy Lynn Cowan and spouse, Nigel, of Odessa, TX, J. Robert Haverland and spouse, Dena, of Dalton, GA, Ronald B. Haverland of Franklin, KY, and Susan C. Haverland of Corrales, NM; five grandchildren, Davina Alison Cowan, Naomi Alana Robison, Dylan Chandler Jones, Dustin Land Jones, and Brooke Meredith Haverland; three great-grandchildren, Lucas Chandler Jones, Taylor Mackenzie, and Shane Emerson Robison; cousin, Mildred Reed of Quincy, IL; and other relatives and friends. Dean Haverland was preceded in death by his beloved wife, F. Louise Haverland, January 1, 2001; grandson, Shane Spencer Haverland; and sister, MaryBelle Coffman. He was born on August 11, 1922 in Quincy, IL, to Mabel and Bernard Haverland. He was both a loving father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Dean Haverland was ordained Deacon in March, 1953, and Priest in 1954, on both occasions by Bishop Stoney. His Church Ministry has transported him to a variety of places: He was Assistant at St. Paul's in Oakland, California, from 1954-1955. He became Rector of St. Christopher's in Hobbs, NM, and St. Mary's in Lovington, NM. Both churches were constructed during his tenure from 1955 - 1957. Dean Haverland returned to California as Vicar of St. Mark's, Santa Clara, from 1957 - 1959. This interval included another church building construction. While in California, he continued his services to the Episcopal Church for twelve years as Rector at St. Peter's in Redwood City. Again, under his leadership, a new parish hall and education wing were erected. Dean Haverland returned to the Diocese of the Rio Grande as the Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque, NM, from 1971 - 1989. During his tenure at St. John's Cathedral, he directed the purchase of property, the construction of the new Cathedral House, and the refurbishing of the Cathedral to include the installation of the final eighteen stained glass windows. He also established the Cathedral Endowment Fund, and under his supervision, the Cathedral ministry was extended to the surrounding downtown community, in order that the Cross might minister to all inhabitants in the heart of the Inner City of Albuquerque. Dean Haverland retired after eighteen plus years and was then called to serve as the Interim Dean from 1989 - 1990 at Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN. After that short tenure, he returned once again to the Diocese of the Rio Grande as Executive to Bishop Kelshaw at the Diocesan House. In addition, he was appointed the Clergy Deployment Officer during the continuing years from 1994 - 1998. Dean Haverland went on to serve as the Provost/Interim Dean of St. John's Cathedral from 2001 - 2003. He continued as Executive to Bishop Steenson from 2005 - 2006. His other diocesan duties included the following activities: He was a member and President of the Standing Committee for a number of years, Deputy to the General Convention for seven years and Alternate for five further years, one of the founders of the Episcopal Charities organization, Chairman of the Retired Clergy of the diocese of the Rio Grande, as well as the Chairman of the Commission on Aging. In addition, he served eight years on the Board of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX, representing the Diocese of the Rio Grande. Dean Haverland enjoyed his role as the Chairman of the North American Cathedral Deans Conferences for a period of ten consecutive years. He became known as the "Papa Dean" and Pastor to other Deans. He was also active in ecumenical affairs and maintained a lifelong interest in the ministry to the elderly. Dean Haverland was also Past President of the Council of Churches in California, and one of the Founders of the Episcopal Homes Foundation in California, in addition to being an active board member. He continued this same interest in retirement communities in Albuquerque, NM, serving as Founder and then President of the La Vida Llena Retirement Center. In Albuquerque he served on the Initiating Committee for the St. Martin's Hospitality Center, on the Board of Trustees of the University of Albuquerque for five years, Past President of the Rotary Club, and as a Paul Harris Fellow. Dean Haverland was also a Member and Past President of the Standing Committee for the Diocese of California, a Retreat and Conference Leader at the Washington Cathedral for Chaplains of the Armed Forces, and was widely known for his teachings on stewardship and planned giving. Above everything, Dean Haverland was known throughout his ministry as "Pastor" to lay people and clergy alike. Dean Haverland will lie in state at the Cathedral of St. John on Friday, December 1, 2006, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for visitation purposes. Funeral Services will be held at The Cathedral Church of St. John, 4th Street at Silver Avenue, SW, on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. Private Interment will take place at the Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. LOVATO -- Ruben M. Lovato passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at the age of 56. He was preceded in death by his son, Adam M. Lovato. Ruben is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Grothe and husband, Mark; Faustina Castillo; grandsons, Tristan and Tyler Huffman; mother, Pauline Lovato; sisters, Shirley Sisneros and Roseanne Lovato; brother, Vincent Lovato; and many nieces and nephews. PERLA -- Sarita Perla, "Granny," died at home with her family Friday, November 24, 2006. Granny was born in New York, where she continued to live and work as a legal secretary. Sarita was an amazing soul - a master bridge player, a world traveler, and a lifelong advocate of education. She ensured that generations of her children would receive college educations. Sarita moved to Albuquerque from Manhattan in 1997 to be closer to her family. She is survived by her loving son, Jeffrey Parks; her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Willow Misty Parks, Lonnie McGuinn, Cory McGuinn-Parks, Monique Parks, Destiny McGuinn Madrid Parks, and Kristiana McGuinn Madrid Parks. SAAVEDRA -- Florencio Saavedra, age 76, our beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, November 28, 2006. Florencio Honorably served his country in the U.S. Army and loved spending time with his family, who were his pride and joy. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Emma Saavedra; his children, Jeff and wife, Glenda, Ronn and wife, Carol, Rick, Mary Ann and husband, Chris, Barbie and husband, David. His greatest treasures are his 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Consuelo, Jason, Nina, Mario, Chandice, Melissa, Megan, John Paul, Nadine, Rowena, and Shelbie. Also surviving are his two sisters, Lucy Ysco and Florinda Flores; other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. SANTOS -- Katherine Santos, age 74, went to be with our Lord, Thursday, November 30, 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Wendy De Smet and husband, Huck; grandsons, Dennis, Michael and Brandon De Smet; sister, Lillian Briesacher and husband, Fred; and granddaughter-in-law, Erica De Smet. TOMLIN -- John R. Tomlin passed away November 28, 2006 at Mountain View Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM. He was born April 20, 1926 in Albuquerque, NM. John graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1944, and then entered the United States Army during WWII. While enlisted in the Army, he served as an Infantry Sergeant in Europe and trained the Military Police. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Soils, and Agriculture Education, and Master's Degree in Educational Administration from New Mexico State University. John was a well-respected farmer in the Mesilla Valley. In 1947 he started farming in the north valley and was later joined by his son Joel in 1982. Tomlin Farms and Seven L Bar produced very diverse crops which included onions, chile, corn, lettuce, cotton, cabbage, alfalfa, pumpkins, watermelons, and honeydews. In addition to farming, John was a legislator in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1966 - 1976 (Chairman of Transportation, House of Appropriation Committee, Interim of School Study Committee, Vice Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Water Committee), and he taught agriculture to Veterans at New Mexico State University in the early 1950s. John was a member of the Southwestern Irrigated Growers Co-op Board of Directors, Farm Service Agency United States Department of Agriculture State Committee (appointed by President Clinton), Winrock Foundation Farmer to Farmer Program to Nicaragua, First Presbyterian Church, Farm Bureau, Shriners, Toastmasters International, Masonic Lodge, Boy Scouts of America, Elks Club, and the Dona Ana County Rock Hounds. John received numerous awards throughout his life which included a Certificate of Achievement from the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, numerous Toastmaster International Awards, a Soil Conservation and Natural Resources Award from the state of New Mexico, New Mexico State Fire Marshall Award for outstanding community work and leadership, New Mexico Board of Realtors Award for legislation for realtors, and the Governor King Award for the creation of the school funding law that is still in use today. John was very dedicated to the Presbyterian Church. He served as an officer to the church numerous times, and he enjoyed the challenges of working with the mission committee. One of the last things he did was to join other Presbyterians on a mission tour of Peru in July 2006. God always came first in his life, and he devoted countless hours to the church. John was a teacher to all he met. He was a compassionate man who had friends from all generations and walks of life. He loved the challenges of farming, the Mesilla Valley, politics, his family and friends. John will be missed by all who knew him, and life without him will never be the same. John is survived by his sons, John Timothy, Joel and his wife, Patricia; daughter, Jennifer and her husband, James U. Le Noir; grandchildren, David, Sarah, Rory, Douglas, Lauren, Ryan (Tomlin), Jeremy, and Joshua (Le Noir). He was preceded in death by his father, Roy; mother, Sallie; son, Jeffery; and his wife, Ina. John will lie in state December 1, 2006 at Graham's Mortuary from 1 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., December 2, 2006, First Presbyterian Church 200 E. Boutz, Las Cruces, NM. Burial Services will be held at the Masonic Cemetery with Military Honors. VANOVER -- John P. Vanover Jr., affectionately known as "Geezer", 65, passed away November 29, 2006. John retired from the State of New Mexico Department of Labor, was a private pilot, a semi-professional singer and guitarist, a Harley Davidson enthusiast, was known for his great sense of humor, and was always the life of the room. He is preceded in death by his parents, John P. Vanover Sr. and Viola Vanover; brother, Mark James Vanover; sister, Phillis Costley; daughter, Mary Celeste Vanover; and great-grandson, Devin Chapman.
