SALAZAR -- Lester Elfego Salazar, 81, died after a sudden stroke March 6, 2006. He was the proud owner of Salazar & Sons Mortuary. Mr. Salazar was born in 1924 to Francisco "Frank" and Candelaria "Lala" (Garcia) Salazar and was the third son among five sons who were raised in the downtown Barelas neighborhood. By watching his grandfather serve families in the funeral industry, he became the third-generation of Salazar's to serve grieving families in Albuquerque. He met his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Sandoval while he was at Albuquerque High School where they both graduated on May 21, 1943. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve where he served during World War II in the South Pacific area until January 1946. Upon his return, he married Rebecca Sandoval on June 26, 1946. The original funeral home was located downstairs in a building at 315 South Third Street, which was the first YWCA in Albuquerque. However, it wasn't until 1946 when both Lester and his brother, Paul, returned from World War II, that he began his profession. The brothers became partners with their father and built the building that is currently at 400 Third St. SW. The architecture was designed in the art-deco style which was popular in the 1940's. Lester and Becky traveled to San Francisco, California in 1948 where he obtained his Mortuary of Science Degree. He was licensed in the state of New Mexico as a Funeral Service Practitioner and conducted funerals until his death. Lester was a former president of the New Mexico Funeral Directors' Association and a former member of the National Funeral Directors' Association. Additionally, he was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a driving force at many legislative measures aimed at the New Mexico funeral industry. A devout member of the Roman Catholic Church, he was a man of God who exhibited special love to everyone and he was an active participant in all school and church functions at St. Mary's School. One of Lester's most admirable qualities was his special sense of humor but also his morals and ethics which were standards for others to emulate. Lester Salazar was the last of the funeral directors that were truly undertakers, people who traveled to the family's home upon notice of a death and undertook all the duties related to the deceased. All-night wakes were common when the undertaker left because his initial task was accomplished. In addition, mortuaries were given the task of providing ambulance service. Therefore, Lester performed general ambulance duties which included the living and the dead. Over the years, he trained many apprentices in the art and skill of embalming. Bringing nearly 60 years of experience to his profession, he was a wealth of knowledge. Retirement was never his intention as his satisfaction came from serving generations of families in the community. Lester is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rebecca "Becky" Salazar; his sons: Lester Alfredo Salazar; Jose Salazar; Lawrence Salazar and his wife, Phyllis; and Louis Salazar and his wife, Gloria; eight grandchildren: Chris and wife, Michelle; Michael and wife, Shannon; Mathew, Luke, Roman, Clarice, Madeline, and Paul Benia. Six great-grandchildren: Kelsie, Melissa, Hannah, Brendan, and Anica Benia, and Maya Benia; a few Aunts and Uncles; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be Michael Salazar, Chris Salazar, Luke Salazar, Roman Salazar, Marino Sandoval, and Paul Montoya. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarice Salazar, Kelsie Salazar, Madeline Salazar, Melissa Salazar, Hannah Salazar, and Brendan Salazar. Mr. Salazar will be lying in state at Salazar & Sons Mortuary Sunday, March 12, 2006, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Monday, March 13, 2006 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday, March 13, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place following the Mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by: Salazar & Sons Mortuary 400 Third St. SW 247-4124

TUDOR -- William A. Tudor Jr. In Loving Memory of William A. Tudor Jr. , who was born March 6th, 1960 and passed away 16 years ago on March 13, 1990. I'll lend you for a little time a child of mine, he said. For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he's dead. It may be six or seven years or thirty-two or three, but will you til I call him back, take care of him for me? He'll bring his charms to gladden you and shall his stay be brief, you'll have his lovely memories as a solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught down there, I want this child to learn. I've looked the whole world over in my search for teachers true, and from that crowd that crowds Lefe's Lane, I have selected you. (I was the honored one when the Lord put you in my arms and made you "MY SON"!). Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain, nor hate me when I come to call to take him home again? I fancied that I heard them say "Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done." For all the joy thy child will bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness,we'll love him while we may, and for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay. But shall the Angels call for him much sooner that we've planned, we'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand! We remember our last good-bye, we were all there with you when you breathed your last breath and I held your hand. Unless you're a mother and have lost a son or daughter, no one can ever fully understand! So parents love your children while you may..for I'd give anything to have my son alive and with me here today!! It broke our hearts to lose you, Billy, but did not go alone, part of your brother and I went with you, the day God called you home. Your last three words spoken were "I LOVE YOU" and we know the love that was in your heart and mind and they forever will be cherished in all our hearts you left behind!! Billy, you earned your angel wings because you were always there to help anyone in need, now indeed there isn't a valley low enough, that you, as our angel can't carry us through. Whenever we feel our arms are too short to reach you and the heavens, we fear not because you, our angel, is reaching out to meet us half way. Everyone has an angel and I know it's true. But if ever there's a shortage, I'd gladly share my angel "MY SON" with all of you!!! Our memories remain as treasures so real, for your death, Billy, is a heartache even time can't ever heal!! Sadly missed by your loving mother, Rose Ann and brother, Robert Tudor
