GORMAN -- R.C. Internationally acclaimed artist R.C. Gorman died peacefully November 3, 2005 at 12:20 p.m. He was 74 years old. Gorman was hospitalized for close to seven weeks, undergoing treatment for a bacterial blood infection highly resistant to antibiotic treatment. The infection resulted in multiple complications including pneumonia, kidney failure, and coma from which he never recovered. He was first hospitalized at the Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, and then transported to intensive care at UNM Hospital on September 24, 2005. Gorman was known for his distinctive artistic expression of Navajo women through lithographs, original paintings, bronze sculptures and ceramics. He possessed a gregarious nature and was generous with his affection for family and friends. Although known as "R.C." or simply "Gorman" to the public, his parents, Adelle Katherine Brown and Carl Nelson Gorman named him Rudolph Carl Gorman. He was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Zonnie Maria Brown at Black Mountain, AZ. His brother and sisters agree that "R.C.'s spirit was unique." Zonnie Gorman, his youngest sister said, "He never lost touch with his Navajo soul. He never lost touch with his roots and that kept him very humble. His soul emanates in his work, whether it was a beautiful scene with mountains and canyons, women or whether it was a simple sketch. Although R.C. the man is no longer with us, his spirit will never die. R.C. is truly a role model for young Native Americans, who want to pursue art and even those who want to pursue business or any kind of dream. He showed that nothing is impossible for Native people and that we can do it on our own terms and say it in our own way. Many people remember our father, Carl Gorman mostly for being one of the original first 29 Navajo Code Talkers but he was also one of the early Indian artists to break away from what was called "Indian Art." In his own way, he opened a lot of doors for his son, R.C. In turn, R.C. has flung those doors wide open for current and future creative endeavors for Native people." Gorman was the oldest of five siblings who survive him. They are: Don Mitchell from Chinle, AZ; Donna Scott, from Chinle, AZ; Shirley Beecher from Black Mountain, AZ; Carla Anderson from Kaibeto, AZ; and Zonnie Gorman from Gallup, NM. Public viewing will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2005 from 4 - 6 p.m. at Rivera Chapel. A Rosary is scheduled for Sunday, November 6, 2005 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 205 Don Fernando Street, in Taos, NM. A public Funeral Service is slated for Monday, November 7, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Sagebrush Inn Convention Center, 1508 South Santa Fe Road, in Taos, NM. Interment will be near his home at Las Colonias, NM. A reception will follow the interment. The Inn is offering a special rate for guests attending Gorman's Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, donations to the R.C. Gorman (Scholarship) Foundation are welcome. Send inquiries or donations to R.C. Gorman Scholarship Fund, PO Box 127, Tsaile, AZ 86556. Gorman's Navajo Gallery in Taos will be closed throughout the weekend and next week. Arrangements by Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home, 758-3841. www.riverafuneralhome.com

HUDSON -- George Hudson, 84, passed peacefully at home on Friday, November 4, 2005 after a short, but brave fight with cancer. A loving and devoted husband, father, uncle, and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by all whom he touched with his gentleness and friendship. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Inez Hudson; four children, Tommy Hudson and wife, Karen, Georgia Hudson and husband, Brent Shepherd, Lucy Lucero and husband, Ernie, all of Albuquerque, and Joanna Hudson and husband, Van Purcella, of Houston; five stepchildren, Margaret Davidson and husband, James Barbour, Connie Martinez and husband, Joseph, Paul Davidson, all of Albuquerque, Dorothy Nesbit and husband, Phillip, of Chicago, and Lisa Davidson of Phoenix; a sister, Dorothy Moore of Greensboro, North Carolina; a brother, T.J. Hudson of Orlando, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his very dear friend, John Marshall Buckles. George was born December 16, 1920 in Francisco, North Carolina, and served in the U.S. Marines during WWII from 1940 to 1946. He moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and New Mexico became his much beloved home - as much for the red chile as for the opportunities to go fishing and spend time with his large extended family. While in Albuquerque, he worked for Rupert Plumbing for more than 20 years. He will be remembered for his infinite patience, his wry southern humor, his passion for growing tomatoes, and watching baseball and college basketball (his Atlanta Braves and Duke University). He moved slowly, wore flannel shirts and baseball hats, was gentle, kind, and generous. He will be remembered by all his grandchildren for the time he spent teaching them many skills from fishing, to fixing things around the house. His stories of growing up in North Carolina and, later, his experiences in the Pacific during WWII are legendary in the family. His wife and children cherish the knowledge that he has always been there for them whenever they needed him - a loving husband and father to his family and extended family - a simple caring man and a true Marine. Semper Fi. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 in the morning, time pending, at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Friends may visit Tuesday, November 8, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. KNOX -- Olive Juliet Pettitt Knox was born on the Ides of March, 1912. She was the second child of William Pettitt and Olivia Riis Pettitt and the sister of an older brother, Henry, and dear younger sister, Katherine. Her childhood was spent either on Keewaydin, the Darien, Connecticut estate of a family of railroad wealth, the Auchinclosses; at the Auchincloss' summer place in Kennebunkport, Maine; or for one brief, but formative, episode in New York City. She fell in love with the City and retained a lifelong romance with it. Raised as the child of servants, she graduated from Darien High School, with honors, in 1930, took the train to New York, and landed a job at the firm of Alan, Klapp, Frazier in an era before carbon paper or erasable type, but full of Depression era pay cuts, and five and a half day weeks. In 1937 her boyfriend, Richard Knox, changed her life forever for the better by inviting her to accompany him, unmarried, to Europe. She did so, and made of the trip the central event of her personal mythology. Upon returning, she got the first job she sought because, of the line of girls looking for work, she stood out as the only one wearing gloves. That was Olive. In those days, Olive, her sister Kate, and their beaus, Richard and Wally Myers, were an inseparable foursome. She and Richard married in 1939 and they moved to Connecticut where she worked for the Vice President of Columbia records, Paul Southard, and a zany crew of artists. In 1947, after Dick returned from service in Europe, her only child, a son Wallace, was born. The family moved west to Albuquerque, NM, where she became the secretary, executive organizer, and mother confessor for the Department of History at the University of New Mexico. Her life there was filled with the kind of devoted friendships a person of her caliber inspires; Virginia McGiboney and Ed Lieuwen come particularly to mind. In her last years, she moved to Los Angeles, CA, to be near her son, his wife, Beth Garfield, and her two adored grandchildren, Aviva and Tamara. She died there at peace with the world and her place in it on the Ides of October, 2005. She was a lady. The old fashioned kind. We shall not see her like again. There will be a Memorial Service for her in the Alumni Memorial Chapel at the University of New Mexico at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2005.
