BARKER -- Dorothy Louise Barker passed away July 29, 2005. She was born in 1912, the daughter of Fred and Effie Bashe, in Seligman, MO, and raised in Monette, MO, and Tulsa, OK. She was graduated from Tulsa Central High School and established a beauty shop at her parents' home in that city. During World War II, she worked as a secretary in the office of the Commandant of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., where she met and married Lt. Albert B. Barker of Bethel, ME. After the war, the couple lived in Chicago, Denver, and Tulsa, OK before Albert rejoined the Army as a career officer. During his time in the Army, the couple lived at Fort Gordon, GA; various U.S. installations in Japan, Seattle and Fort Lewis, WA; and in northern Virginia. They settled in Albuquerque at Albert's retirement. He died in 2000 and is buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery. She is survived by her children; Mitchell Barker and Christine Rocha; and her grandchildren, Tami Towell and Jeremy Barker; all of Albuquerque. Raised in poverty during the Depression, she contributed to Allied victory over the Axis powers. She provided a stable home for her husband and raised two children to be contributing and law-abiding citizens. It is not just the celebrated and the powerful who make a nation great. BAUER -- Rhea I. Bauer, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1958, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005. She is survived her husband of almost 60 years, Charles W. CERVANTES -- Steven Jesse Cervantes, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, went home to be with our dear lord, peacefully in his sleep on July 29, 2005. He was born May 7, 1970. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Jerry G. Ortiz; uncle, Alex Ortiz; and cousin, Gerald Ortiz. DEMERS -- Rita Demers, 76, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2005. Born in Lowell, MA, she lived in Albuquerque from 1965-1988. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. She moved to Phoenix in 1988 and was a parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Rita was a homemaker and a great Mom. HERRERA -- Louis Robert Herrera, age 53, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2005. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, he worked as a landscaper and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. HUFFMAN -- Joseph Gregory Huffman, 91, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Friday, July 29, 2005 at his home. He was born March 8, 1914 in San Pedro, CA, the only child of Clarence Joseph and Mary Cecilia Corcoran Huffman. He grew up in San Pedro where he graduated from High School. He obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Loyola University of Los Angeles, CA. He worked for Union Oil for 22 years and retired as a Senior Engineer with many patents for his inventions. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a chief radio technician. He loved Ham Radio and Railroading. He was active at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and served as a docent and as president of the Volunteer Association. He was very involved in his parish at Our Lady of Annunciation, serving as Lector and past president of the Golden Agers numerous times. Joe's motto was to make the world a better place. Survivors include many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. The Holy Rosary will be recited Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Church, 2610 Utah St. NE, 87110. JACKSON -- Robert Wallace Jackson passed away on Friday, July 29, 2005, in Albuquerque, NM. He was born on September 16, 1926, in Guymon, OK, to Wallace and Berenice Jackson. He graduated from Guymon H.S. He attended Southwestern State University, in Weatherford, OK, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. Bob served his country, as a Sgt. in the Air Force, during WWII. He was a member of First Baptist Church, in Guymon. He married Darleen Nasset on August 16, 1953. He and his father owned and operated Jackson Drug and Jackson Pharmacy Shop in Guymon, OK. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Dean Kell. Survivors include his wife, Darleen, of Albuquerque, NM; his brother, Boyd Jackson of Tuttle, OK; two daughters, Nancy Chambers of Midland, TX and Susan Kinneer of Phoenix, AZ; two sons, Ken Jackson and Rob Jackson, both of Albuquerque, NM; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Henson-Novak Funeral Home in Guymon, OK on Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Derek Cox, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. LEACH -- Howard Charles Leach, Jr., 80, died July 30, 2005 from complications following an auto accident. Howard was born April 11, 1925 in Redwood City, CA. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Davison Leach of the family home in San Antonio, NM; one brother, Joel Oliver Leach and wife, Arlene of Sacramento, CA; children: Kenneth C. Leach and wife, Hazel Tull-Leach; Donald B. Leach and wife, Janice F. Leach; Michael D. Leach and wife, Margaret M. Leach; grandchildren, Jeremiah C. Duff Leach, wife Delia, and great-grandson, Christian A. Anaya-Leach, Emily J. Leach, Matthew H. Leach, Kristina A. Leach Martinez and husband, Daniel, Gregory F. Leach, Charles P. Leach, and Thomas M. Leach. Howard grew up in Berkeley, CA, served his country in World War II, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, married in 1948 and moved to Whittier, CA where his three sons were born. Howard began his employment career in corrections as a probation and parole officer in Los Angeles, CA. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1962 when he took a job with the President's National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In 1970, Howard was appointed Secretary of Corrections for the State of New Mexico and served during the administrations of governors David Cargo, Bruce King, and Jerry Apodaca. In 1976, he left the NM Department of Corrections to begin a career in industrial real estate. In 1980, Howard and his son Michael started their industrial real estate company, Sycamore Associates. He retired in 1995 and moved to San Antonio, NM to enjoy a rural lifestyle as a gentleman apple farmer. He enjoyed working on his cabin in Platoro, CO. Howard was a man of deep spiritual commitment and great integrity. His love of the Lord, his family, and fellow man, was demonstrated daily throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. MATTSON -- Richard E. Mattson, 72, passed away following an extensive illness on July 31, 2005. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jean Anne; daughters, Wendy and Susan; son, Eric; son-in-law, Lionel; daughters-in-law, Sharon and Melinda; cherished grandchildren, Jillian, Samantha, Logan, and Sasha; sisters, Maryanne and Judy; and many cousins. Born in Scranton, PA on October 7, 1932, he was raised in New York City where he developed his love and talent for music and singing. It was love at first sight in 1951 when he met his future wife in Manhattan. Soon after, he was shipped to the Philippines with the Coast Guard where he worked as a radar specialist. He graduated in 1955 from RCA Electronic Institute, and soon after went to work for IBM as a computer programmer/system analyst. At age 60, after 35 years of service, he retired from IBM. Richard was a master craftsman, and renovating his Victorian home in New York was his passion. He also loved the outdoors, and spent many happy times camping with his family. He will be missed for his great sense of humor and deep devotion to his family. Thank you to the medical community in Albuquerque for your expert care. You are the reason we had Richard in our lives for the past 12 years. A special thank-you to Dr. Gabrys for your friendship, compassion, and wisdom to both Richard and his family. MERCER -- Harold "Hal" J. Mercer, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died Friday, July 29, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna Mercer; sons, Harold A. Mercer and wife, Donna, John R. Mercer and fiance, Ruthie and Jerry E. Mercer; daughter, Janice Beyer and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Jonathan and Michael Parker, Jake and Sarah Mercer, Rhiannon and Travis Mercer, and Aaron Singdahlsen; great-grandchildren, John Adam Parker, Dante Tow, and Keoni Singdahlsen; brother, Allen Mercer and wife, Helen; sister, Dorothy Eddleman; and many other loving family members and friends. Hal was born in Prescott, AZ on December 21, 1928. He grew up and graduated in Prescott. He attended UNM and graduated with a Masters Degree 1957. Hal was a teacher and principal with APS for 34 years, teaching at Sandia Base. He was a principal at Wherry, Zia and Marie Hughes. Hal was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was an associate member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Hal was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. PACHECO -- Pamela Marie Pacheco, age 39, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, and aunt, went home with the Lord, Monday, August 1, 2005. Pamela was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, George Chacon. Pamela is survived by her loving daughter, Victoria Navarro; her grandson, Rey David Cruz; her parents, Shirley and Ruben Lovato; brothers, Mark Pacheco and John Chacon; maternal grandmother, Trini Chacon; niece, Alexis Pacheco; nephews, Mark Pacheco Jr. and Dominic Pacheco. PEREA -- Maximo Miguel "Max" Perea, age 63, went to meet Jesus, Saturday, July 30, 2005. Max was a musician for many years with music being a big part of his life. Max served his country in the US Army. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and raising pigeons. Max was a member of the Fanciers Pigeon Club. His laughter and jokes will always be remembered by everyone his life touched. A resident of Corrales, NM, formerly of Taos, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Quintana in November 2004. Cecilia is survived by her loving children, Ann Lucero and husband, Richard of Alameda, NM, Orlando Quintana and wife, Rose of Taos, NM, Rosemarie Padilla and husband, Robert of Corrales, NM, John Quintana Jr. of Taos, NM, Joyce Quintana of Rio Rancho, NM, Celestina Quintana of Taos, NM, David Quintana of Santa Teresa, NM, and Petra Quintana and David Rael of Taos, NM; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Arnold Montes; sister, Bertha Ochoa; numerous nieces, nephews; and other beloved family members and friends. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary; where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. this evening. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales, NM with the Reverend Clarence Galli as celebrant. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be Montes Trujillo, Dominic Duran, Vincent Duran, Orlando Quintana Jr., Adrian Lucero, and Delano Lucero. THOMPKINS -- David Gilbert Thompkins, 66, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on July 30, 2005. David Gilbert Thompkins was born to Helen Belle Thompkins and David Albert Thompkins in Pittsburgh, PA. David served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after two tours in Germany. His passion was Mercedes Benz automobiles, and was the founder of Starlite Classics in Wilkinsburg, PA before moving to Albuquerque, NM in 1990. He was an avid horticulturist and was known as a good friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Thompkins; his sons: Carter, Curtis, and Carroll Thompkins of Dallas, Tulsa, and New York, respectively; his siblings, Shirley Higginbotham of NY, Jerry Thompkins of Bushkill, NY; and numerous family members around the United States. He will be missed by all. The family of Mr. Thompkins will be reflecting on his life with a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. in the Reflection of Life Chapel on Wednesday, August 3, 2005. TORREZ -- Juan Rey Torrez, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, passed on to be with Our Lord on July 30, 2005. Juan was born to Porfiria Trujillo and Pedro Torrez on January 6, 1930. Juan is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Candelario (Lalo) Torrez. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Clotilde Otero Torrez; two sons, Anthony and Amos Torrez; one sister, Ricarda Archibeque; three brothers, Melchor Torrez of Rowe, NM, and Polo and Alfred Torrez, both of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Audrey, Andrea, and Desiray; and two great-grandchildren. VARELA -- Manuel Rey Varela, 21, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on July 31, 2005. Manuel is survived by his parents, Rey and Gloria Varela; his son, Isiah Varela; his fiance, Lazette Ortiz; two sisters, Bianca Varela and Claudia Salazar; three brothers, Cipriano Salazar, Rudy Varela, Devin Daniel Varela; his grandmother, Maria Refugio Varela; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Manuel was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Devin Salazar; his grandfather, Perpetuo Varlea; and his grandmother, Carmen Gallegos. Manuel was a member of the Catholic Church. A visitation for Manuel will be Thursday afternoon in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna NW with visitation after 6:30 p.m. A final visitation will be Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the San Jose De Armijo Cemetery. WOODWARD -- Milton E. (Woody) Woodward, age 76, of St. Petersburg, FL died July 29, 2005 of emphysema. He was a resident of Albuquerque for 36 years. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Forbes; daughter, Karen O'Kelly, husband, Gary, and grandchildren, James and Kristine of Rio Rancho, NM; son, David Woodward, wife, Frances, and grandchildren, Kathryn and Robby of Dallas, TX; Gail English and husband, Paul of Albuquerque; Darla Gensinger, husband, Larry, and grandchildren, Andrea and Cheyanne of Albuquerque. Woody was born in Detroit, MI and moved to Albuquerque in 1960. He was in real estate and construction and retired from the City of Albuquerque in 1995. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered on Boca Ciega Bay where he loved to fish. A Memorial Service will be held in Albuquerque at a later date.
