ADLER -- Arthur Adler, age 87, passed away Friday, July 22, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sylvia; son, Eugene and wife, Maria Sabatel-Adler; granddaughter, Melanie and husband, Dennis Whitson; great-granddaughter, Kiley Elizabeth Whitson; grandson, Jonas and wife, Ashley Adler; and step-granddaughter, Michelle Sabatel. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, but had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1973. He was a longtime member of Temple Albert, the Jewish War Veterans and the Rio Grande Woodcarvers Club. He enjoyed woodcarving, discussing politics, fishing, watching boxing, and playing billiards. A Memorial Service will be held at his son Eugene's home on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. Please phone 293-2766 for more information. The family requests that flowers not be sent.

BLACK -- John Seaman Black, 21, born in Albuquerque, April 26, 1984, died July 24, 2005. John was a graduate of Rio Rancho High School and attended New Mexico State University before becoming a Certified Flight Instructor, employed at West Mesa Aviation. He was Cadet 1st Lieutenant MCJROTC at Rio Rancho High School and a member of the Blue Knights Honor Society, AFROTC at NMSU. He loved God and was a charter member of Christ Community Fellowship Church. John is survived by his mother, Shelley Black of Las Cruces; and his father and stepmother, Nick and Ann Black of Moriarty; his sister, Evie Black of Las Cruces; and step-brother and sister-in-law, Justin and Kari Marbury, all of Albuquerque; step-brothers, Aaron, Phillip, and Reed Marbury of Albuquerque; grandmother, Patches Willcox of Pasadena, CA; grandmother, Jean Black of Loveland, CO; aunt, Wendy Kendig of Sydney, Australia; uncles, Wayne Willcox of New Orleans, LA, Grant Willcox of South Pasadena, CA; and uncles, Fermor Black of Loveland, CO, Allen Black of Wasilla, AK, Greg Black of Winchester, VA; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ. DI TOMMASO -- Ruth Benante Di Tommaso, 86, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1977, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2005. Ruth was born January 15, 1918 the daughter of Walter Forest and Cecelia Dulmer Kyse in New Jersey. Ruth was active in bowling and enjoyed square dancing. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Benante in 1985 and her second husband, Anthony Di Tommaso in 1996. Ruth is survived by her son, Richard Benante of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Nicole Benante of Lake Forest, CA; brother, Walter Kyse and wife, Edith of Rio Rancho, NM; sister, Virginia Melanson and husband, Lawrence of Paramus, NJ; and five grandchildren, Sean Blackman, Jaimie Blackman, Kirsten Miller, Michael Novak, and Christopher Benante. The visitation for Ruth will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2005 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday, August 1, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Rd., Rio Rancho. GATES -- Bob Gates, 75, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, was killed in a car accident on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. He was known for his love of life and love of people, his jokes, and all sports with fishing having a special place in his heart. Gates is survived by his special friend, Pat Barry; son, David Gates and wife, Roberta of Albuquerque; daughter, Debbie Jameson of Twenty-nine Palms, CA; three grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, and RyAnn; his sister, Adele Gattas of Albuquerque; sister-in law, Elizabeth Gates; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Gates; and brother-in-law, Ned Gattas. His parents were Lebanese immigrants and he cherished his Lebanese background. Gates lived in Albuquerque for 59 years and throughout his gregarious life, he "never met a stranger." Therefore he is much beloved by many friends and family who will deeply miss his joyful spirit. Gates worked for the original Ned's El Portal, owned and operated the Sidewinder Bar in Los Lunas, worked and retired from selling insurance for Prudential and most recently owned Gates, Inc. He loved New Mexico and spent his life traveling all of its back roads. Gates could provide a travelodge, rating the best watering holes and fishing spots throughout the state. He truly appreciated all of the people he met and the places that he visited. Gates was a loud, burly, fun loving "diamond in the rough" that always gave more than he took. He was forever young and generous of spirit and loved to play practical jokes. Gates was a storyteller extraordinaire. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona SE on Saturday, July 30, 2005, 9:00 a.m. with Father Thomas Mayefske, Celebrant. After the Mass friends may gather at David's house to celebrate and remember Gates' life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gates' name to the American Cancer Association. HILL -- Betty Gloss Hill, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, 2005 in Albuquerque with her loving family at her side. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Fred C. Hill of Albuquerque; her children, Kayreen Sargent of Edgewood, NM, Kreg B. Hill of Albuquerque, and Karl G. Hill of Seattle, WA; by her sister, Frankye Flemins of Oklahoma City, OK; and by many more family members, and friends. Betty was born in Otto, NM, on May 7, 1926 to Earl Gordon and Bodie (Long) Gilmer and was raised by Bodie and Stepfather Stuart Gloss in Moriarty, NM. Betty graduated from Albuquerque High in 1943 and from Albuquerque Business College in 1944. She married Fred C. Hill on March 3, 1945. She was the founding president of the Albuquerque Home Builders Auxiliary. Betty had a warm, bright, sociable personality. She was an avid square dancer and artist who enjoyed ceramics, and painting. Betty will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The immediate family held a Graveside Service at the Mountainview Cemetery in Moriarty, NM. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Los Altos Christian Church, 11900 Haines Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM. HIRSCHFELD -- Eric Hirschfeld passed away as a result of an automobile accident at twilight in the rain and fog in San Miguel County on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Tinamarie; his daughter, Selina, age 11; and his son, Joshua, age 8, all of the family home in Bernalillo. Also surviving are his mother, Lorraine Ravenswood of Las Vegas, NM; three brothers, William of New York, NY, Elliott of Santa Monica, CA, and Matthew Valerio-Hirschfeld and wife, Violette of Albuquerque; nieces, Venus Jensen and husband Jeremy, Athena and Kathrina Hirschfeld; aunts, Ellen Schulte and husband, Paul of Batavia, NY, and Carolyn Slater of Princeton Junction, NJ; his mother-in-law, Margaret Gonzales of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters-in-law, Renee and Jolene Cabrera of Denver, CO; other beloved family members; and a host of friends. Eric was born in New York City and grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, Oak Park IL, Albuquerque, NM, and several Beach Cities in Southern California. He met his wife in Santa Monica, CA and in 1992 they settled in Bernalillo, NM where they raised their family. He worked most of his life as a plumber; he was known by friends and neighbors for his generosity and willingness to help. He will be sorely missed, especially by his family who loved him so very much. MARTINEZ -- "DJ" Daniel John Antonio, born November 17, 1972 died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, following a courageous battle with Adrenomyeloneuropathy. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony Michael in 1979 and William Joseph Martinez 1986; uncle, Andrew Chavez in 2003, cousins, Erik Thomas Arvizu and Kenneth P. Jones, II, of the same dystrophy and his father, Anthony Michael in 2004. He is survived by his mother, Kathy, his stepfather, Steve "Papacito", Sebastian Armijo his wife, Jessica, Jonathan Weber, Daniella Armijo, Enrique Mondragon and only surviving grandparent his "Grandmama", Esther Chavez, numerous aunts, uncle and cousins. DJ graduated from Valley high school in 1991. He was a salesman extraordinaire working for local companies. DJ was also a sports fanatic. His most beloved teams were the Oakland Raiders, Boston Celtics, and University of Duke Blue Devils. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited Sunday, 8:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos Rd. NW, with Father Antonio Mondragon reciting. Mass will be celebrated Monday, 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with Father Antonio Mondragon, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sal Abeyta, Elton Walker, Ron Robles, Fred Jaramillo, Patrick Chavez, Sebastian Armijo and his Godson, Estevan Armijo. PETERSEN -- Elsie E. Petersen passed away Thursday, July 28, 2005 in Albuquerque at the age of 76. Mrs. Petersen was a longtime parishioner of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She retired after many years of Federal Service. Much of her life, lived as a single parent, was devoted to being a good mother and setting a good example to her three children in the areas of compassion, work ethics, and independence. The love of her life was caring for her special son, Richard, up until her passing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tranquilino and Antonia Baca; her brother, Gillie Baca; niece, Loretta Armijo; and nephew, Dennis Baca, Jr. Mrs. Petersen is survived by her children, Charlene Lopez and husband, Joe of Albuquerque, Richard Petersen of the family home, and Gail Ward of Sacramento, CA; brothers, Eloy Baca and Dennis Baca; sisters, Ada Chavez and husband, Charles, and Dolores Armijo; grandchildren, Denny Garley and wife, Elaine, Adam Garley, Shelly, David, and Paige Ward; five great-grandchildren; as well as many nephews and nieces. TORRES -- Gloria Torres (1931 - 2005) Gloria Torres, 74, a native of Albuquerque, was born June 22, 1931 and died peacefully at her home on July 28, 2005. Gloria was loved and will be missed by her family as well as many friends who were touched by her life. Gloria was well known as a gentle soul with a loving heart. Gloria will be deeply missed and remembered by her husband, Art; five children, Cathy Jourdan of Nevada, Michael Torres, Loretta Nazzarett, Elizabeth Pohl, and Dawna Torres, all of Albuquerque; 13 grandchildren, Sean, Shannan, Scott, Aaron, Brian, Deanna, Daniel Arthur, Jonathan, Stephanie, Amber, Angela, Luke, and Nick; one sister, Lorraine Torres; a sister-at-heart, Armida Quezada; three aunts, Gertrude Garcia, Tomasita Padilla, and Martha Lee; and numerous cousins.
