WHITON -- Carroll Nix Whiton passed, Monday morning, with the same quiet dignity and strength that characterized her life. Even under the stress of long term illness she always greeted family, friends, and caregivers with cheerfulness, gratefulness, and a smile that lit up the room. Born in Clayton, NM on December 14, 1918, she witnessed great changes in New Mexico and America in her 86 years, from horseback transportation to the marvels of modern 21st century life. Mom and Dad were looking forward to celebrating 62 years of marriage in March. She is survived by her husband, Joe Whiton; their son, Ken Whiton; and grandchilren, James Whiton, Nancy Noice and Amy Heald; and son-in-law, Dan Heald. Carroll was preceded in death by her daughter, Janie Heald and a grandchild, Katherine. Carroll met and married Joe, her future husband, in the middle of WWII, proudly joining in the many sacrifices that were a part of everyday life during that time of great national peril. She followed her husband, a career Air Force officer and later a small businessman, across the country as his assignments required. She was a bastion of strength to younger Air Force wives, helping them adjust to the rigors of military life. Carroll always created a warm and loving home for her family no matter where she found herself. Her family was always her first priority. She enjoyed gardening and made the desert bloom. Carroll read and collected Western novels and books about early western life because the "Old West" was so much a part of her life. She also loved animals and cared for all that came her way. Carroll taught her children the importance of family, love, and integrity. Carroll will be mourned and missed by all who knew her. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
