CORTESE -- Frank B. Cortese, Sr., (Papa) age 77, went home to be with the Lord and his beloved Tillie (Termite) on December 8, 2004. Frank was born in Albuquerque, NM to Bruno and Angela Cortese. Triolo and husband Adam, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Nicholas and Noel Cortese, Hollis White and Cristin Fuller, and Amber and Monique Triolo; great-grandchildren, David, Eli, and Ethan; two sisters, Rosemary Shaw and Peggy Romero and husband Jerry of Albuquerque; and lifelong friend Lawrence Rivera. Frank graduated early from St. Mary's High School in Albuquerque, so that he could enlist in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II, having survived time in the South Pacific as Seaman First Class. Upon returning to Albuquerque, he entered school at UNM where he earned a BS in chemical engineering. . During May 2002 he was honored as a 50 year, golden alumni at University of New Mexico's commencement exercises. In addition to attending school, Frank operated a local establishment with his father called Frank's Bar. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Tillie. Frank and Tillie married on September 10, 1951 and remained married until her death in June 2003. A few years after marrying, Frank sold the bar, but this did not stop his adventurous, entrepreneurial, spirit. During his lifetime his career path was a winding one. He worked as an insurance salesman, a private investigator, drove a truck for Zip potato chip company, delivered milk, owned a gas station, owned Real Milk dairies, and eventually settled into a job at Nobel/Sysco food company where he worked for 20+ years. After "retiring" from Sysco, he worked in his business, Cortese Rental Properties while helping Tillie in her Mary Kay career. Frank had three children and was very proud of all of them. He always encouraged them to do their best, excel in all they did, and supported them throughout their endeavors. In between work adventures and raising a family, Frank enjoyed remodeling his home. Throughout the years he spent countless hours mixing concrete, putting up rock facing, and landscaping. Frank loved to listen to music, especially opera, and was always reading. He loved to cook. During Christmas time Frank would battle Tillie for the kitchen so he could make his Italian specialties. "Papa" loved all his grandchildren and took pride in watching them grow, taking care of them before and after school and cooking for them. His hearty laugh and stern lectures will be missed by all. The last 9 months of his life were spent at the Cottages of Albuquerque where he was taken care of by his angels here on earth. The family cannot extend enough thanks to the angels at the Cottages for the care, love and respect that was extending to our "Papa" while being a resident at the facility. KUSNETZ -- Alberta Kusnetz, born on December 25, 1933, resident of Albuquerque since 1972 is remembered for her dedicated service as a registered nurse, strong heart and abundance of love for family and those fortunate to have shared her thoughts and endeavors. Alberta extended her professional RN credentials and contributed to the welfare of many in need. After graduating from the University of New Mexico she achieved a Masters and Counseling credentials, without any diminishment of being there for her children, Arthur, Ira, Ilyse and especially Susan. This memorable mother, wife, and friend shared in many adventures and affected the lives of all who came to know her. Encouraging her husband Norman and his career work in Brazil, and with their then seven-week-old son, she soon led the mothers of Rio de Janeiro in a cultural revolution-reclaiming their children from 'Empregadas' to join Alberta in wheeling their prams and strollers on the mosaic sidewalks of Copacabana, together in the robust pleasure of bonding mother and child. Her exciting and creative work in the art medium of clay and pottery has been shared with mutual respect and admiration by those who worked with her; and with special delight and memory by loving recipients of her work. Also sharing in this proclamation of love are her brothers Sol, and Myron with Mary V. and sisters, Mary G. and Evie; and so many dear nephews and nieces who have touched her heart. Alberta started a new adventure on December 9, 2004, leaving her friends and family with those memories necessary to carry on her wonderful dreams. Please send your dear ones something special this day to express a sign of appreciation and thanks for making your own dreams and adventures as memorable as our are today; and if you can, donate to those organizations dedicated to cancer research and extension of quality of life. TO MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS When I am gone, let me go, release me, I have so many things yet to do and see. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears, be happy that we had so many beautiful years. I gave to you my love and you can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it's time I traveled on alone. So grieve if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for a while that we must part. So bless the memories within your heart. I won't be far away, for life goes on, so if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near and if you listen with your heart, you'll hear. And then when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile that says, "Welcome Home!" Cremation has taken place after a private memorial service. YELL -- Barbara Burruss IN MEMORIAM Barbara Burruss Yell Born September 9, 1915 to William and Louise Burruss in Springfield, Massachusetts, Barbara died December 1, 2004 at her home in the care of Presbyterian Hospice and her loving daughter, Jennifer Yell Kirwin and Jennifer's husband, William Kirwin, of Newport Beach, California. Barbara lived a truly remarkable life until several months ago when she succumbed to serious illness. Barbara was the wife of Eugene Yell, Professor of Theater Arts at The University of New Mexico. Gene died in 1992. Following their marriage in Chicago, they moved first to Florida and then, in 1948, to Albuquerque. Their time together included amateur and professional theater. She attended high school in Newton, Massachusetts, and received her degree in Fine Arts from The Goodman Theater at the Chicago Art Institute, also the alma mater of her husband. She became a fashion model, and later was deeply involved in the Federal Theater, taking shows on the road for that organization. Barbara had an exciting and fulfilling life which included working for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, where she enjoyed fighting for human rights and better working conditions in factories. She and Gene spent the summers for 50 years at "Hemlock Hollow," their wooded retreat in Western Maryland, where for 30 years they owned and operated a summer stock theater. Barbara and Gene enjoyed travel, spent many winter vacations with friends in their favorite city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and many autumns in another of their favorite place, London, for the theater season and visiting friends there. Barbara also worked for many years in real estate in Albuquerque. She numbered among her many friends in the arts and letters the late playwright Noel Coward, and author, interviewer, radio talk show host and Distinguished Scholar at the Chicago Historical Society, Studs Terkel. Barbara and Gene shared their life and home with long time friends from the University who will miss her great generosity and wonderful bon vivant spirit. Her time-honored remark, "You can't recover from old age " will be long remembered. Services for Barbara will be held at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel on December 19, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. There will be a gathering of friends at her home following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UNM Drama Department scholarship fund, the ACLU, or the Humane Society of New Mexico.
