ANDERSON -- Joe Anderson, 68 of Fort Sumner, NM died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004 at Lubbock Health Care in Lubbock, Texas following an extended illness. Joe was born October 16, 1936 in Littlefield, Texas to the home of George C. Anderson and the former Lizzie C. Gleaton. He was reared at Fort Sumner where he attended school, graduating in 1956. While attending Ft. Sumner he participated in football and basketball. Joe married Jessie Pickett on July 5, 1957 in Las Vegas, NM. They made their home in Las Vegas where Joe was employed by Mountain Bell Telephone. He was drafted into the US Army where he served four years. Following his honorable discharge he continued as a technician for Mountain Bell for 31 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Las Vegas and a longtime volunteer with the City of Las Vegas Fire Department. Joe and Jessie made their home and farmed in the Fort Sumner valley since 1990. Joe was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters L G Sinclair, Thelma Anderson, Eva Teal, two brothers Mose Anderson, and Carl Anderson. Survivors include his wife of 47 years Jessie Anderson of the home in Fort Sumner; one brother Doug Anderson and wife Shelby of Gaston, Indiana; seven sisters Wanda Mechnig and husband Bill of Roswell, NM; Jewell Sasser of Clovis, NM; Fern Hay and husband George of Pep, NM; Mae Hodge, Dorothy Neuman, Frances Nahlovsky, and Blanche Boyd all of Fort Sumner, NM. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law Walter Pickett and wife Teresa of Los Alamos, NM; Clyde Pickett and wife Jackie of Las Vegas, NM; two sisters-in-law Shirley Payne and husband Jim of Deming, NM, Bea Anderson of Fort Sumner, NM along with many loving nieces, nephews including Joy and Larry Batts of Hobbs, NM, a host of friends and good neighbors. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner with Rev. Coy Brewer officiating; burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. GARCIA -- Valerio Garcia, 81, went home peacefully with our Lord, Thursday, November 11, 2004. He was born in San Jose, NM., and was a longtime resident of Albuquerque. Valerio served in the US Navy during WWII, and retired from the Albuquerque Public Schools in 1985. He is survived by his six children, Bernie Griego and wife Jo, Ted Garcia and wife Loretta, Jose C. Garcia and wife Corrine, Teresa Whiting, Dorothy Jeter, Carmen Griego and husband Celestino; 19 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Carmen Trujillo; sister, Frances Munoz and husband Dan of Marysville, CA. He will be greatly missed by all, including his many nieces, nephews and friends. GIBSON -- Robert R. Gibson, 81, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died on Friday, November 12, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Gibson; children, Linda Shaw and husband, William "Bill"; Robert "Tripp" Gibson and wife, Marilyn, and Bradley "Brad" Gibson; grandchildren, Tara Ramirez and husband, Daniel, Bevin Shaw, Bryna Shaw, Brennan Shaw and wife, Venise, Tiernan Shaw, Colin Shaw, Bree Ann Gibson, Makaela Suitt and husband, Jason, Trenton Gibson, Travis Gibson, Kelsey Adams and husband Daniel, and Keller Gibson; great grandchildren, Katherine Shaw, Tristan and Gabriel C. Adams. Robert was a graduate of Albuquerque High School in 1941 where he was an all-state football player, and was a graduate of Wichita State University. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II. Robert worked at Kirtland AFB in Contract Management Division before retiring in 1984. GOFF -- Margaret "Margo" L. Goff, 68, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, November 11, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Emerson E. Goff; step-daughters, Betsy Neuhaus and Edward Schultz, all of Albuquerque and Edna Hatty and husband, Samuel of Elephant Butte; and brothers, Elidio and Henry Gonzales and wife, Lupe, sisters, Mary Alice DeLaGarza and husband, Alex, Olivia Rios and husband, Albert Virginia "Pina" Spencer, all of San Antonio, TX; friend and cousin, Susie Atkins and husband, Larry; numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews; and her constant companion, Jack, her German Shepherd. Mrs. Goff was a terrific marriage partner. She worked several years for Lovelace Hospital in the Histology Department. Mrs. Goff returned to college and graduated from UNM with a degree in Education and then returned to work at her first love, as a histologist at Tri-Core. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Mrs. Goff was a longtime active member of the German Shepherd Club of America. GREEN -- Vercie Ledbetter Green, 86, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2004. She was born in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, the daughter of Emmitt and Emma Ledbetter. She is survived by her husband, James W. Green; two sons, James D. Green of Rio Rancho and Richard L. Green and wife, Linda of Red River, NM. Vercie was employed for many years by the New Mexico State Department of Education as a Certification Technician. She spent many of her younger years with the Junior Women's Organization in Hobbs, NM, where she served as President and was active in Santa Fe, NM. Vercie was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Friendly Bible Class. HAYDEN -- Lucy Ann Hayden died peacefully after a long convalescence and brief illness. She was born Lucy Ann Allison to Mary Hinkle and Thomas Lester Allison in Oklahoma City, May 13, 1914 and died November 9, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. Lucy recently received top honors by the National Association of Dance Instructors when she was chosen as one of only five teachers in the nation to receive an award for her work. Many of her students stayed in contact with Lucy from around the world many of whom went to dance in major dance companies or have taught dance in various universities and schools in the US and abroad. The last member of her immediate family, Lucy was also preceded in death by her husband William J. Hayden, a well known actor, director and playwright. Lucy and Bill opened one of the first ballet schools in Albuquerque, Hayden School of Ballet, and the Albuquerque Children's Theatre in 1960, which are still going strong today. Lucy began studying ballet at age 8 in Denver, Colorado, where she lived into her twenties. She taught ballet in Wyoming, Nebraska and Denver before she moved to NYC, at age 30. There she studied dance with Martha Graham, the famous dance specialist, and Merce Cunningham. She stayed in New York City for ten years where she and Bill married in 1958. In 1960 they moved to Albuquerque where they opened their ballet and theatre school. She said "Bill helped give me the confidence that I could make a living at dance instruction." They combined their talents to teach dance and theatre to children ages 6 through high school. They gave yearly recitals featuring ballet and other types of dance, acting and pantomime for 30 years. Lucy taught hundreds of children in Albuquerque over the years and is also known for helping Albuquerque Children's Theatre keep going after her husband Bill died in 1989. She was given an honorary seat at the Albuquerque Little Theatre for her contribution. Despite her busy schedule she also volunteered for Meals on Wheels as a member of Monte Vista Christian Church and Anna Kaseman hospital for several years. Lucy will be missed by many for her profound influence and insightful knowledge on the dance and theatre community in Albuquerque and beyond. She is survived by her nephew John Allison, and friend Cathy Wiest, sister-in-law Laura Allison, niece Carol Allison-Huntress her husband Erny Huntress, and grand niece Ariel Huntress of Albuquerque; her niece Betsy Nazare husband Dave, and grand niece Rachel Nazare of Park City, Utah; her niece Marcia Travers, her husband Richard and grand-nieces Alyssa and Serena Travers of Lewes, Great Britain. In lieu of flowers Lucy asked that donations be made to Albuquerque Children's Theatre or Monte Vista Christian Church. HETSCHEL -- Sara E. Hetschel, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1967, died Friday, November 12, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Albert W. Hetschel of Albuquerque; son, Jeffery W. Hetschel and wife, Deborah of Mission Viejo, CA; grandchildren, Daniel Paul Hetschel, Nicole Mary Hetschel, and Alyssa J. Hetschel; sisters, Betty Bresh and husband, Paul of Ft. Meyers, FL and Judy Holzer and husband, Michael of Wauconda, IL. Mrs. Hetschel was born and raised in Taylorville, IL. In 1946, she graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, IL She was an Air Force veteran serving in the Nurse Corps where she met and married her husband in 1953. She worked in many hospitals thorough out Albuquerque during her career. Mrs. Hetschel was a member of Eastern Star. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed deeply by her family. SALAS -- Albert Salas, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday. He is survived by two sons Henry Salas and Ronnie Salas; three daughters Celia S. Manley, Monica Ortiz and husband Eloy and Susie Gonzales and husband Alex; one brother Urbano Salas and wife Elsie; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. SPEARS -- Helen Kay, beloved daughter, sister, and friend departed this life on November 9, 2004 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born September 28, 1956 in Fort Worth, Texas. Helen Kay was a 1975 graduate of Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas where she served as President of the Student Body. Helen Kay graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1980 where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority and the University Pom Pom squad. She was honored by being elected one of the ten most beautiful coeds at the University of Arkansas while she attended there. After graduating from the University of Arkansas Helen Kay taught school in the Little Rock, Arkansas area. She was a member of the Little Rock Junior League for five years. She then began her 10 year career with Southwest Airlines starting in Little Rock, Arkansas before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Helen Kay was a dear and loving individual with a flair for the creative arts. She is survived by parents Helen Barrett Spears of Dallas, Texas and John T. Spears Jr. and Mary Spears of Irving, Texas. She is also survived by her sister Patricia Spears Thompson, brother in law Damon B. Thompson, and niece Megan Thompson of Coppell, Texas. She was predeceased by grandparents Gertie Bell Dalton Barrett, and Benjamin C. Barrett of Mansfield, Texas; and John T. Spears, Sr. and Marta Louise Spears of Ardmore, Oklahoma. STRANCE -- Edward L. Strance, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, quietly slept away from us on Friday, November 12, 2004. Edward served his country in WWII and then retired from Sandia Labs. He is survived by his daughter, Melody Porr; two grandchildren, Shane and Cherise; two great-grandchildren, Edwardito and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elvina in 2002. She was a resident of New Mexico most of her life, only leaving here for a brief time to go to California. Julia was of the Catholic Faith.
