BARRIGA -- Francisco (Chico) R. Barriga, age 86, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother was called by the Lord our Savior to His heavenly home, the early morning of Wednesday, December 3, 2003. Francisco was a resident of Meadow Lake, NM formerly of Presidio, TX. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army; and was a past member of the Disabled American Veterans in San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by two children, Jose and Georginia; grandson, Daniel; and granddaughter, Blanca Rosa. Francisco is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Socorro Barriga of the family home; his children, Frank Barriga, Jr. and wife Jesusita, Socorro Sotelo and husband Roberto, Ezequiel Barriga and wife Alicia, Eliseo Barriga and wife Mary, Mario Barriga and wife Darlene, Ninfa, Mando, Lorina, Oscar, and Ivan Barriga; 29 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ramon Barriga of Presidio, TX; other relatives and friends. Francisco will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. Visitations for Mr. Barriga will be held Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary; where a Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, NM. BORN -- Robert Born, 77, lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma on November 23, 2003. He was born in Woodland, MI. A Veteran, he proudly served his country during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Employed in the construction industry, he worked in many states and Egypt. Bob never met a stranger, and he always had a story or comment to offer everyone. He was a decent, honest, caring man who lived by his word. He always called himself just a poor old country boy. He loved his wife, family, golf and Detroit Red Wings hockey. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Barbara; one brother, Phil and wife, Joyce of Tucson, AZ; sisters, Carolyn Brechiesen and Frances Reuther of Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria; and parents, Robert and Vesta Born. The family thanks, for their outstanding and gentle care, Dr. Douglas Clark, the entire staff of NM Oncology Hematology Consultants, and the staff of 5B at Presbyterian Hospital. There will be a Prayer vigil on Friday, January 16, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. and a Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE. BYNON JR. -- John F. Bynon, Jr., 76, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Shirley Bynon of Albuquerque; daughters, Barbara Kline and husband, Tony of Brenham, TX, Patti Schneider and husband, Marc of Albuquerque; son, David Daniel and wife, Anna of Lubbock, TX; daughters, Debra Curry and husband, Howard of Peralta and Dona Wright and husband, Tom of Keller, TX; grandchildren, Chris, Stephanie, Brian, Ryan, Jennifer, Jeremy, Brad, Amanda, Melanie, Kara, Tracy, Samantha and Mark; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Bynon was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Cleo. He was a graduate from Albuquerque High, class of 1945 and UNM, class of 1949 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. COHEN -- Sophia Cohen, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away in Modesto, California on December 1, 2003, just prior to her 92nd birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Cohen, her sister Florence Price, and her brother Steve Kitzes. Following the death of her husband, she relocated to Modesto, CA where her daughter Bonnie lives. Sophia was born in Denver, CO, where Abe and Sophia were married in 1935. They moved to Albuquerque in 1936, where they founded the Pay Less Drug Stores chain, which later merged with Walgreen's. Sophia was an active member of the Albuquerque community, serving as President of Hadassah and President of Toastmistress as well as performing in several local theater productions. She enjoyed singing the songs of her era, and she will be fondly remembered for her singing style which delighted and entertained many people. Her contributions to Congregation B'nai Israel and the Ronald H Gardenswartz Jewish Community Center were many, including the gymnasium and athletic facility at the Jewish Community Center, named in honor of Abe and Sophia. A devoted and loving mother, she is survived by her children who were all born and raised in Albuquerque: Bonnie Strauss and husband Alan of Modesto, CA; Joyce Bloch of Aventura, FL; and Morty Cohen and wife Barbara of Corralitos, CA. She is also survived by her sister, Sadye Epstein of Emeryville, CA. Her grandchildren include Robert Strauss and wife Leigh, Randall Strauss and wife Katy, Richard Strauss, Adam Bloch and wife Brenda, Jason Bloch, Kai Connor, Matt Cohen and Abe Cohen. Her great-grandchildren include Aaron Strauss, David Strauss and Alec Bloch. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, including Jeffrey Epstein, Robert Epstein, Mark Epstein, Sally Metzgar, Steve Burrell, Mark Burrell and Carol Potocki. Remembrances may be made to one of Sophia's favorite charities, including Congregation B'nai Israel and the Ronald H Gardenswartz Jewish Community Center. Services will be Sunday, December 7 at 3 o'clock p.m. at Fairview Memorial Cemetery, 700 Yale Blvd., SE. Officiating will be Rabbi Arthur Flicker and Cantor Michael Dzubin.

DOYLE -- Marguerite Lenora Spray Howell Doyle, age 94, passed away Saturday,November 29, 2003. She was born in Maquoketa, Iowa on June 27, 1909 and had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1937. She treasured her relationship with the Lord and was a member of the First Spanish Fruit Avenue Baptist Church and previously Riverside Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school classes for many years. Preceding her in death were her husband,James P. Doyle, her mother Chloe Alice Spray Howell, and father Jack Howell. Surviving Marguerite are sister Cleora Beatrice Spray Howell Skovof Waterton, TN; son John H. (Jack) Doyle and wife Linda, of Oak Ridge, TN and daughter Diana Doyle McMahan and husband Mick, of Albuquerque. Grandchildren include Jacqueline Doyle Allison and husband Mark of Atlanta,GA; Jeanette Doyle Rodgers and husband David of Fairfax, VA; John Dunning Doyle of New York, NY; William A. (Mick) McMahan of Albuquerque and USAF Major Melanie McMahan McPherson of Roosevelt Roads Naval Air station,Puerto Rico. Great-grandchildren include Mallory Rodgers and Michael Rodgers of Fairfax, VA, a niece and nephew and several great nieces and nephews . A memorial service lead by Rev. HOUGE -- Richard H. Houge, 47, lost his courageous battle with Leukemia on Thursday, December 4, 2003. He was born on November 6, 1956 in Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his mother Ellen Houge; his four children, Michael, Nicholas, Melissa and Thomas Houge; sister Lori Truster and husband Matthew; brother Thomas Houge and wife Lori; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father John T. Houge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force receiving the rank of Staff Sergeant. At the time of his passing, he was employed by Paradise Village. LOVATO -- Wilma T. Lovato, 86, went home to be with the Lord on December 4, 2003. She was born on April 13, 1917 in Los Valdez's, Colorado. Mrs. Lovato is survived by her son, Jose Samuel Lovato; daughters; Sally Harger and husband Bob, Lucy Anstett and husband Joe, Jessie Zamora and husband Martin, Rosemary Charles and Jenna Armijo; brother, Louis Trujillo and wife Linda; sister, Gloria Lopez and husband Larry and her brother-in-law, Pete Lovato and wife Elenor; 24 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. MCGUIRE -- John Patrick McGuire, born August 30, 1931, died November 22, 2003. A life long resident of Albuquerque, Pat is survived by his loving sister, Mary Lou Frangos and husband, Nick; uncle, Fred Roehl (Frances) of Albuquerque, NM; aunt, Jeanne Roehl of Albuquerque, NM. Pat was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae McGuire and his parents Roy McGuire, mother, Mary Roehl Lackey and step-father, Orth Lackey. Pat was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over forty years. He reached the level of Fourth Degree Knight and served as Grand Knight for two years in the John F. Kennedy Council. MONTOYA -- Jesus A. Montoya, age 83, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec 4, 2003. He was born July 18, 1920, to the late Justo and Agneda Montoya. Also preceding Jesus in death was his beloved wife, Eva Suina Montoya; son, Justo Montoya; brother, Macario Montoya; and sister, Cora Martinez. Jesus honorably and proudly served his country during World War II and was so pleased that he was on the "frontlines for 166 days and came home without a scratch." Jesus was a painter with the Zia Corporation in Los Alamos, and retired after 30 years. He belonged to the Painter's Union, and was a lifelong member of the VFW. Jesus truly enjoyed working with his cattle at the ranch in Los Montoyas. He will forever be remembered for his devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and to his Christian faith. He was a simple man, but a true "gentle" man who loved everything in life, especially spending time with his family and friends. Jesus was also a kind-hearted, generous man who was always doing for others. His favorite saying was "Be good to yourself." Jesus was survived by his son, Johnny Montoya; his loving daughter, Lou Martinez and husband Tony; and granddaughter (his Hita) Carol Martinez, whom he adored. Also surviving him are sisters: Esther Perea of La Junta, CO; Connie Garcia of Rio Rancho, NM; Isabel Martinez and husband Domingo of Albuquerque; and Vangie Garcia and husband Antonio, also of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Lena Ortiz; comadre Ruby Shirley of Santa Fe; special friend Tina Carrillo, and numerous nieces and nephews, who fondly knew him as "Uncle Chuy," Montes or Montana. NICHOLAS -- Eva M. Nicholas, 96, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Manor Care Nursing Home. She was born in Aurora, S. Dakota on April 25, 1907. She was a longtime resident of Tucson, AZ and moved to Albuquerque in 1999. Her parents were Jerrod and Elma Phillips and she was one of 10 children. She is survived by her daughters, Wanda F. Hagmeyer of Shreveport, LA, Mary E. Henry and husband, William, of Gilroy, CA, and Madonna E. Watkins and husband, Charles, of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Nicholas. QUARGNALI -- Paola Bianca Quargnali. Passed away on Sunday evening, November 30, 2003, in the peace of her home on Old Town Road in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is survived by her children, Amina and Alessandro, her son-in-law, David; her daughter-in-law Joanna; her sisters, Enza and Lia; and many other loving extended family members (a complete obituary appeared in Tuesday's edition of The Albuquerque Journal). Paola will be buried in Italy, but there will be a memorial and celebration of her life at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2003 in the main ballroom of La Posada de Albuquerque. SHORT -- Wanda J. Short, a resident of New Mexico since 1937, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003. She was born June 6, 1919 in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Mrs. Short was preceded in death by Bud, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her daughters, Frances McCandless and husband, Gordon of St. Louis, MO, Phyllis Kenderdine and husband, Eugene of Albuquerque, NM; son, James Short and wife, Pamela of Santa Fe, NM, grandchildren, David McCandless and wife, Carol, Tim McCandless and wife, Stacey, Lisa Leguet of St. Louis, MO, Charles DeWitt and Elizabeth DeWitt of Albuquerque, NM, Gregory Short and wife, Sabrina of Vancouver, WA, and Erik Short of Portland, OR; six great-grandchildren, Isabelle Leguet, Audrey and Elliot McCandless and Annika and Allison Short. She is also survived by her good friend, Bill Harmon. Mrs. Short was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Las Aranas, and enjoyed working at the New Mexico State Fair's Sheep to Shawl. Wanda loved spinning, weaving, crafts and spending time in Mexico. She was loved and respected by her family and friends and will be deeply missed. SHRIVER -- Mary Katherine Shriver, 93, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died in San Diego on Tuesday, November 25, 2003. She is survived by sons, Richard Shriver and wife, Judy of Poway, CA and Stephan Shriver of Washington, DC; daughter, Helen Tucker and husband, Tom of Poway, CA; grandsons, Rick Tucker and wife, Heidi of Newman, CA and Mike Tucker of Poway, CA; and great-grandson, Wyatt Tucker of Newman, CA. Mrs. Shriver was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Shriver and granddaughter, Kathy Tucker. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters. STAEHLIN -- Gene Robert Staehlin, born August 13, 1928, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, December 4, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Tina; sons, Robert and wife, Shirley, Tim and Mark; daughters, Ann Steinmentz, Jone Marten and husband, Keith; grandchildren, Brooke and Piper Marten, Sonya Steinmetz, Christopher and Alex Staehlin, Tiana Staehlin; stepson, Sam Silva and wife, Patty and their children, Jason and wife, Angela and daughter, Joreen; grandchildren, Brad, Krysteen and Garrett; brother, Al Staehlin and wife, Dot; sister, Marlene Mathis and husband, Dave; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Gene owned and operated Albuquerque Plumbing and Heating. He retired in 1997 and at that time Albuquerque Plumbing and Heating had served the community for 110 years. Gene served on the Board of Directors for M.C.A. and local 412 for the apprenticeship program. The Board for Mechanical Bid Depository and lifetime member of the Elks. Services will be held Monday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Pallbearers will be Art Chavez, Ricky Stevens, Keith Marten, Jim Glover, Ohio Knox and Dave White. Honorary pallbearers will be Ellis Matson, Dick Dawson, Dale Mitchell, Bob Walsh and Monroe Miles. STEWART -- Mamie B. Stewart, 96, a resident of Albuquerque for 15 years, passed away on December 3, 2003. She is survived by her son, David A. Stewart and wife, Linda of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Sandra Stewart of Rio Rancho, NM, Robert Stewart of Livermore, CA and John Stewart of Amarillo, TX; three sisters, Pearl Long, Helen Feltz and Jane Williams all of Memphis, TN. Mamie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of Taylor Rancho Baptist Church. Mamie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Olive Chapter in Jonesboro, Arkansas for more than 50 years. She won several awards at various fairs for her hooked rugs. Mamie also loved to knit and crochet. Memorial service will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Taylor Ranch Baptist Church, 6400 Golf Course Rd. NW with Dr. Tim Morrow, officiating. WILLIAMS -- Katherine L. Williams at age 60, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 3, 2003. She was born February 7, 1943. Katherine was a member of the New Mexico Restaurant Association and owner of Katie's Trading Post in Isleta, New Mexico. She was retired from the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs. She is survived by her father, Arthur M. Garcia; her mother, Marie Rose Lucero; her husband, Lambert E Williams; daughter, Patricia M. and husband, Mitchell McCracken; son, Frank A Lerma Jr. and his wife, Laura Lynn; step children, Keith L. Williams and Michael Williams; brothers, Arthur E. Garcia and his wife, Rachel and Max P. Garcia; sister, Rochenda and her husband, Rick B. Knisely; grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew, MacKenzie, Mark, Ryenne, Ryleigh, McKaylyn, and Shelby. A viewing will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Romero Funeral Home. A viewing will be held Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. with a funeral Mass following at St. Augustine Church, Isleta Pueblo at 12:00 noon. Pallbearers will be Matthew McCracken, Mitchell McCracken, Frank Lerma, Arthur E. Garcia, Mark Lerma, Max P.Garcia, Keith Williams and Rick Knisely.
