BERTINO -- James Peter Bertino, 79, of Santa Fe, NM, died on Monday, September 15, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa; sister, Flora; father, Dominic; and mother, Giacinta. Mr. Bertino was born in Raton, NM, on July 1, 1924, to Dominic and Giacinta Bertino. James was Valedictorian of Santa Fe High School in 1943, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, where he graduated in 1947 from Yale University. He was also a member of Yale Chapter of the Society of Sigma XI. From 1947-1983, was employed as a chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. James was an avid traveler and botanist, and loved the blues! James is survived by his daughters, Anne (Patrick) Bertino of Phoenix, AZ, and Paula (Neal) Bertino of Santa Fe; and son, Peter Bertino of Las Vegas, NV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be donated to Open Hands and/or St. Vincent de Paul Society of Santa Fe in Jim's name. A Rosary will be recited Thursday, Sept 18, 2003, at 7:00 p.m., Berardinelli Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the St. Francis Cathedral. Interment to will be held at Rosario Cemetery. CHAVEZ -- Pete A. (Pedro) Chavez July 4, 1930 - September 5, 2003 Pete A. Chavez, 73, died in California where he resided for the past 35 years. Pete is survived by his wife, Lucy Andrade Chavez; sons, Martin and Pete Jr.; daughter, Gina Chavez Almeyda; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandsons; a sister, Virginia Lujan; and several nieces and nephews. Pete was born in Valencia, New Mexico. He attended Albuquerque High School. He enjoyed telling jokes, hunting, and playing music. An accomplished musician, he played several instruments and performed with several local groups during the 1950s. During this time he married and started a family. He initially worked for Whitmer Mills as a lumberjack and later as a machinist at ACF. He served in the US Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict. In 1968, he moved his wife and daughter to California. He worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry and as a musical instrument repairman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In his retirement, Pete enjoyed playing video casino games and cards and became a Tai Chi instructor. Rosary and Vigil Service will be at St. Francis Church, 820 Broadway SE in Albuquerque, Thursday, September 18, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will also be at St. Francis Church, Friday, September 19, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. Interment is at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

CHEROMIAH -- Ted "Doc" Cheromiah, 50, a resident of Albuquerque, NM for five years and former resident of Prescott, Arizona, passed away on September 16, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Debra Cheromiah; son, Franklin Cheromiah and daughter, Theresa Cheromiah all of Albuquerque, NM; brother, Angus Cheromiah of Grants, NM. He is also survived by numerous other relatives in Laguna Pueblo; Arizona and upstate New York. Ted was a veteran of the US Navy; he served as a Boatswain's Mate during the Vietnam War and as a Hospital Corpsman during Desert Storm and was active in the Naval Reserves. He was member of the VFW in Prescott, Arizona. Ted was employed by the Veterans Administration for 26 years. He was a Gourd dancer for the Pow Wow, dancing in the Gathering of Nations. Ted was a very loyal, honorable, loving husband and father and had a good sense of humor. Prayer service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel with Deacon Bob Lewis, officiating. DICKER -- Frank W. Dicker, Lt. Col., US Army (ret), age 82, passed away in peace on Sunday, September 14, 2003 in Albuquerque. Frank, a resident of Albuquerque is survived by his wife, Dolores Dicker; sons, Michael Dicker of Albuquerque, Thomas Dicker of Tullahoma, TN, Paul Dicker of San Antonio, TX and Joseph Dicker of Albuquerque. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Frank was a decorated career soldier. As a WWII combat veteran, he served in Europe with the 8th Air Force as a B-17 crewmember in the elite 100th Bomb Group. Frank also served two combat tours in Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, Frank worked with the Navajo Nation. Frank was a loving father and husband, adventurous, bold, and lived life to the fullest. FITZPATRICK -- Florence J. Fitzpatrick, a longtime resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on September 16, 2003. She was born on August 25, 1912 to Otto and Minnie Heisner Skopec in New York. Florence was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, and past president of the Elks Ladies of Rio Rancho. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband James in 1983. Florence is survived by her beloved daughter Joan and husband Fred Uhlmansiek of Rio Rancho; brother, Arthur and wife Willy Skopec of New York; her grandchildren, James and wife, Tracy Stuart of Albuquerque, and Pamela Stuart of Rio Rancho. JARAMILLO -- John A. Jaramillo, 32, passed away on September 14, 2003. He was born on February 28, 1971 in Espanola, New Mexico. KAY -- Hugh A.Kay, passed away on September 12, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Billie B. Kay, who passed away on May 29, 1998. Mr. Kay was born March 12, 1913. He spent his early years in Texas, living in several towns in the Texas panhandle. He attended Texas Technological University graduating with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He later attended Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a registered professional engineer and a licensed airplane pilot. Mr. Kay was employed by a public utility in Dallas for four years before being employed by the United States Government. His assignments included employment by the War Department, Civil Aeronautics Administration, Department of Defense and the Atomic Energy Commission. During his employment, he received a number of outstanding achievement and superior performance awards. He retired with 30 years government service. During World War II, Mr. Kay served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps Aviation branch. He completed 20 years service in the Marine Corps Reserve. Mr. Kay was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite and the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Cryptside Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Hillcrest Mausoleum in Dallas, TX. MACE -- Rose Mary (Drake) Mace, 72, a resident of Albuquerque since 1939, died Saturday, September 13, 2003. She is survived by her husband, James of 53 years; sons, James Jr. and wife Susan from Bella Vista, AR, Greg and wife Peggy, and Edward and wife Susie all of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Alex, Emily, Carla, Chrysta, Kelley, and Madison; brother, Leroy Drake and wife Amalia of Albuquerque; sister, Betty Hupp and husband Bill of Roseville, CA; brother Howard Drake and wife Phyllis of Santee, CA; sister, Margaret Brabson and husband Ed of Alamogordo; sister-in-law, Maclovia Drake of Albuquerque; aunt, Clara May (Drake) Vanzuro of Albuquerque; and many nieces, nephews and family friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul and parents, Carl and Ruth (Ernest) Drake. Rose was born in Wichita, KS. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Albuquerque in 1948. Upon marrying James in 1950, she accompanied him on his many assignments in the USAF. Rose was active on each base. After James' retirement in Albuquerque, Rose worked at Dillard's as a credit manager. She loved to bowl and was an active skier. Rose served as president of the Coronado Ski Club. She was an active member of Sangre de Christo Catholic Community. NEUMON -- Elsa Marie Neumon, 80, a life long resident of Albuquerque, returned peacefully home to God surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 17, 2003, after a long illness. She is survived by Norman and Viva Neumon, their children George and Laura, and their grandchildren Rebecca and Derek; Kristine Fambrough and her children, Stephanie, Clayton, Jennifer and Jason Simpson, and grandchildren Tyler and Kyra; Stephen and Donna Neumon, their children Kelly and Richard Durrett, Katherine Neumon, Kristin and Zachery Doran, grandchild, Johnathan; Julie and Fred Ambrogi, grandchildren Brian and Jared. Her brother Carl Olson, his children, Linda and Ed Grochowski, Karen and William Homer, Keith and Rhonda Olson and nieces and nephews Rachael, Andrea, Benjamin, Christopher and Alex. Sister-in-law Marie Vitale, nieces and nephews Tommy, Susan, Rosemary and Vinny and their families. Brother-in-law Joe Neumon and wife, Helen, nephews Alfred, Ronnie, Joe and their families. She was preceded in death by husband, Bert Paul Neumon, they married in 1944. Elsa attended Eugene Field Elementary, Lincoln Junior High School, Albuquerque High School and the University of New Mexico. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Education in 1944, after which she joined the Navy WAVES. Elsa was assigned to the Brooklyn Receiving Station where she served as Captain's Yeoman Second Class for the duration of the war. Continuing her education she received a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1963 and a Doctorate in Education in 1972, from the University of New Mexico. At UNM she was a SPUR and Mortar Board member. Elsa was an employee of the Albuquerque Public Schools educational family. As a Home Economics teacher, she taught at Harrison Junior High School from 1958 - 1960, served as a guidance counselor at Washington Junior High School from 1960 - 1970 and Assistant Principal from 1970 - 1972. She completed her professional career as a Highland High School Hornet serving as Assistant Principal from 1972 - 1985. Since her retirement she has done extensive traveling, served as an active member of the Albuquerque Association of Educational Retirees at both the local and state level. She also served as a volunteer in the Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary. Elsa was an active member of the local WAVES organization. She has been a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she found strength and peace serving in many capacities. Memorial Services will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m., September 26, 2003, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Road NE, with Reverend Patricia Holman, officiating. NOGALES -- Joe Nogales, 66, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003. He is survived by his brothers, Louis Nogales and wife, Gloria and John Nogales and wife, Julianne; sisters, Mary Helen Flores and husband, Ted, all of Albuquerque and Rose Ann Valenzuela of Las Cruces; fiance, Maria Sommers of Las Cruces; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosalio "Rosy" and Elaisa Nogales and nephew, Louis Nogales, Jr. Mr. Nogales served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1955 to 1959. He volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Ghost Church for many years and he also volunteered at the VA Hospital for many years. Rosary will be recited Friday, 8:30 a.m., followed by the Mass at 9:00 a.m., at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona SE, with Father Thomas J. Mayefske, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. OTERO -- Albino Otero, age 81, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, Wednesday, September 17, 2003. Albino was born in Tajique, NM; and was a resident of Los Ranchos. He was preceded in death by two sons, Demecio and Charlie Otero; and a grandson, Joseph. Albino is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Otero of the family home; his children, Nestor Otero and wife Barbara, Frank Otero and wife Liz, Bernie Otero and wife Elaine, Albino Otero, Jr. and wife Maria, Annie Otero, Ida Rodarte and husband Larry, Grace Otero and Rick Perea, Mable Barela and husband Mario, Eva Padilla and husband Michael, Merlene Garcia, Wanda Otero, and Robbyn Moya and husband Anthony; his precious grandchildren, Jeremy, Yvette, Kathy, Felicia, Andrea, Dominic, April, Matthew, Mark, Michael, Jerome, Amy, Adrian, Jennifer, Ashley, Anthony, Jr., and Brittnay; his great-grandchildren, William, Sara, Tara, Kristina, Joshua and Emilia. PAYDEN -- Joseph Payden, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 13, 2003. He was born on January 31, 1929 to Joseph and Ida Puckey in McKeesport, PA. Joe was very proud to have served his country in the United States Navy during WWII with tours of duty across the Mediterranean. He was an extremely friendly man who had never met a stranger. He was known to all as the "candyman", endlessly handing out his favorite Jolly Ranchers. The children in the neighborhood were very fond of hearing his musical horn when Joe passed by the bus stop. His passions included buying and selling cars, and playing many games of billiards. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marian of Albuquerque; his precious sons, Scott and wife Kristen, and Craig Payden all of Cleveland, OH; sister, Mrs. Margaret Barowich of McKeesport, PA; a host of special friends and neighbors, and his inseparable canine companion, Zipper. QUIROZ -- Robert (Bobby) Quiroz, 39, Died Monday, September 15, 2003. He was a lifelong resident of Bernalillo. RIVERA -- Henry E. Rivera, a resident of Albuquerque since 1918, died Sunday, September 14, 2003. He is survived by his son, Henry M. Rivera and wife, Bernadette of Washington, D.C.; daughters, Carol Zonski and husband, John of Albuquerque, Susan Adkins and husband, Larry of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Tasha Zonski-Armijo and husband, Philip of Albuquerque, Nikki Zonski-Foley and husband, Sean of St. Paul, MN; grandsons, Dr. Henry E. Rivera II and wife, Paula of Hartford, CT, Arik Zonski, Ryan Zonski, Zachary Adkins, Joshua Adkins, Seth Adkins, all of Albuquerque; great- grandchildren, Joseph Zonski of Albuquerque, Payton, Chase and Brooke Foley of St. Paul, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Mr. Rivera was born in Glorietta, NM on November 8, 1911 and was raised in St. Anthony's Orphanage in Albuquerque until he was 17. He then began working in the Tuberculosis Sanitariums. At the age of 21, he began his long career in the liquor industry. He owned and operated the Victory Bar on First Street, Old Town Liquor Shoppe from 1959-1988 and was President of Jubilation Wine & Spirits from 1988 to present. He served in WWII in the 90th Division as a medic and landed on the Beaches of Normandy, France on D-Day. He returned to Normandy in 1994 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of D-Day and was presented the "Liberte Medal" from the people of France by Congresswoman Heather Wilson in June 2001. He was a long time member of St. Charles Borromeo Church and recently became a member of Our Lady of Fatima. Henry was also a lifetime member of the Benevolent Order of Elks. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, with Fr. Francis X. Eggert, Celebrant. RUIZ -- Tom Ruiz died Tuesday, September 16, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 67. Mr. Ruiz is preceded in death by Freddy Ruiz. He was a great father who will be truly missed. SANCHEZ -- Mrs. Emma Candelaria Sanchez, 94, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on September 16, 2003 at home with her loving daughter, Mary Lou, at her side. Mrs. Sanchez is survived by three daughters, Emily Martinez and husband. Johnny, Rosie Serna and Mary Lou Saavedra and husband, Felix; five sons, Charles Sanchez and wife, Dolores, Willie Sanchez and wife, Josephine, Eusebio Sanchez Jr., Paul Sanchez and wife, Patricia, Johnny Sanchez and wife, Sandra; one brother, Epifanio Candelaria; 37 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; special niece, Frances Gonzales; Special granddaughter, Evelyn Costales; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Sanchez was preceded in death by her husband, Eusebio Sanchez Sr.; her daughter, Lucy Tafoya; her grandsons, Willie Sanchez Jr. and Victor Anaya; and her son in law, Eloy Serna. Mrs. Sanchez was a member of the Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart League, a pioneer of the San Jose Community, was an avid bingo player and had a great sense of humor. SELFRIDGE -- Kylee Exandria Selfridge, born on May 19, 2003, went to be with God on Saturday September 6, 2003. SHOWS -- Sybil Shows, 89, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2003. Born in Australia, she moved to the United States with her husband, who worked for North American Aviation, in 1944 and became an American citizen. They settled in Albuquerque in 1955 where they raised their children. Sybil became an integral part of the bowling community, becoming a member of both the Men's and Women's Hall of Fame. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, John M. Shows and is survived by her three children and their families. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Parish located at 5311 Phoenix NE.

SOTEL -- Dorothy M. Sotel died peacefully Saturday, September 13, 2003 at her home. She was born in Miami, Arizona on November 4,1923, and was a resident of New Mexico for the past 69 years. Her sisters Marian Sotel, Connie Ryan and husband Jack of Albuquerque, uncle Thomas Abousleman of Jemez Springs, nephews Greg and David Ryan and niece Sharon Ryan, and numerous cousins survive her. Her dogs Annie and Lily will sorely miss her. Dorothy retired from the Soil Conservation Service and was formerly employed by the Department of the Navy. She was a former member of American Women?s Business Assn., a docent at the Rio Grande Zoo and a member of the Women?s Auxiliary of Annunciation Parish. Dorothy was avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and gambling. Cremation has taken place. Rosary will be recited Thursday September 18, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. on Friday September 19, 2003 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE. STAAKE -- Marjorie Staake, 78, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 13 years, and formerly of Los Alamos, NM, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2003. Marjorie was born January 30, 1925 the daughter of Jasper Harvey and Winifred Lauramore Ryals in Jacksonville, Florida. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho, enjoyed playing golf at Chamisa Hills Country Club, and enjoyed her afternoon get togethers with her friends. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Harold W. Staake. Marjorie is survived by two children, Bruce Staake of Albuqeruque, and Patricia Ulsh of Silver City, NM; five grandchildren, Kristin Cashman of Albuquerque, Jennifer Luck of Austin, TX, Judy McCreadie of Ft. TENORIO -- Mela Tenorio, age 88, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Monday September 15, 2003.
