APODACA -- Candido Apodaca, 92, a lifetime resident of Corrales, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2003. Candido was born May 11, 1911 the son of Daniel and Batrice Martinez Apodaca in Corrales. He had been a farmer most of his life. He was a veteran of WW II and fought in the Southern Philippines Liberation Campaign. Candido was a member of the American Legion Post 69 in Alameda. He was a member of the San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales, and later at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho. Candido is survived by his wife, Lena (Salce) Apodaca; daughter, Charlene Whiteman Davis of Rio Rancho; grandchildren, Terri Davis Babick and husband, Randy, Jeanine Davis Lombardo and husband, Tano; four great- grandchildren; one sister, Emma Sanchez; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 4,2003 from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho, with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. The Service for Candido will be held on Friday, September 5, 2003 at 9:30 AM in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. ARGO -- Jim R. Argo passed away September 1, 2003 in Tempe, AZ where he made his home. Jim was born in Albuquerque November 29, 1942, the youngest child of Bernard and Juanita Argo. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Anna; daughter, Holly Long and husband, Chuck of Mesa, AZ; son, Jesse and fiance, Kelly Winter of Miracopa, AZ; brother, Bernard Argo and wife, JoAn; brother-in-law, Dean Kern; mother-in-law, Beverly Crowder; sisters-in-law, Toni Thomas, Deborah Kubler, Laura Ray and husband, Gene all of Albuquerque, Celest King and husband, Rebel of Midland, TX; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, September 5, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne, 1100 Coal Ave. SE in Albuquerque. Services will be Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. BACA -- Santiago (Jim) Baca, age 84, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2003. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jeanette; two sons, Michael and Leonard; six grandchildren, Christopher, Brian, Daniel, Michelle, Leanne and Dillon. He was retired from Sears. He spent his retirement with friends playing racquetball and traveling with his family. He was proud to serve in World War II, stationed in the Alaskan, Aleutian Islands. He will be greatly missed. A Rosary will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1860 Griegos Rd. NW at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2003. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 8, 2003, 10:00 a.m. also at Our lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. The family would like to thank all nurses, doctors and caregivers at Lovelace Hospital for the wonderful care and support given to Jim and his family. BLINN -- Carolyn M. Blinn, 78, died Sunday at her home in Albuquerque. Carolyn was born August 2, 1925 to Edna (Lear) and Morris Blinn in Trenton, NJ. She is survived by many good friends at Emmanuel Metropolitan Community Church. After graduation from high school, she received a degree in nursing. When Carolyn first moved to New Mexico, she worked in Belen as a live-in nurse for a friend, then moved to Albuquerque in 1983 where she held various jobs. a Memorial Service will be held at Emmanuel Metropolitan Community Church, 341 Dallas NE on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. In place of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Emmanuel MCC, general fund.

CHAVEZ -- Daniel P. Chavez, 22, a resident of Albuquerque. passed away on September 1, 2003. Daniel is survived by his parents, Henry and Margaret Chavez; his sister, Angela Chavez and boyfriend, Rey Mora; his brother, Mario Chavez and girlfriend, Alicia Garcia and her daughter, Juliana; and his niece, Sarah Chavez. Daniel was a member of the Catholic Church, an avid sports fan and employed with Chavez Auto Parts. Daniel was recently united with his biological family, Denise Lovato, Charles Marquez, Antonio Griego, Andres Marquez, Charles Marquez, Destiny Lovato and Florencia Laris; he was also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation will be Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW, with a Scripture Service at 7:30pm. Final visitation will be Friday morning from 9:30am until 10:00 a.m. in the Church with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Gino Correa. Interment will follow at Mt. CHAVEZ -- Dulcinea Chavez, born June 12,1927 has gone home with Lord in the loving arms of her family, after a short battle with scleroderma, on Tuesday September 2, 2003. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Martin S. Chavez; parents, Nicholas and Bartolita Alderete; brother, Luis Alderete; sister, Placida Saavedra; and son-in-law, Ray Gonzales. She is survived by four sons, Alejandro (Bebe) Chavez and wife, Monica, Johnny Chavez and wife, Tam, Eric Chavez and wife, Angelica, and Alejandro (Critter) Chavez; four daughters, Rosalia (Lea) Gomez, Elijia Robinson and husband, Robbie, Martha Salazar and husband, Fred, Jackie Chavez and husband, Dennis. She leaves behind 15 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild whom she loved and adored. She is also survived by one sister, Angelita Mora; six brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and numerous nephews and nieces. Dulce has also left behind a very special nephew and niece, Johnny and Teresa Tapia; and her niece, Annie Gutierrez. Dulce will be missed tremendously. She was the #1 fan of Johnnie Tapia and a dedicated fan of the SVLL and Rio Grande Raven Baseball Teams. The lack of her presence will be felt on the stands. FOX -- Henry Fox, 82, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past four years, and coming to Rio Rancho from Raton, New Mexico, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2003. Henry was born September 22, 1920 the son of Alexander and Regina Merkin Fox in Patterson, New Jersey. He had worked in retail before retiring. Henry was a member of the Meadowlark Senior Center. He was preceded in death by one son, Alexander in 1996 and his wife, Janice in 2002. Henry is survived by two daughters, Gretchen Saunders and husband Thomas, and Susan Blinzler and husband Dick; grandchildren, Richard Peter and Christie Blinzler, Janice June and Joseph Roebuck, Michelle Andrea and Amanda Lynn Fox, Jennifer Diane and Veronica Marie Saunders; and one great-granddaughter, Samantha Jean Blinzler; and Susan Fox. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2003 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico at 2:00 p.m. with Linda Dyer officiating. GILL -- Beatrice Marie Gill, 72, passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 52 years Robert; nine children, Michael (Sherry) Gill of California, David Gill of Albuquerque, Deborah (David) Heeter of Albuquerque, Mary (Steve) Carter of Los Alamos, Richard Gill of Nevada, Roberta (Blaine) Bagwell of Colorado, Catherine (Josh) Cannon, of Albuquerque, Christopher (Virginia) Gill of Albuquerque, and Tamara (Ralph)Wood of California: 16 grandchildren; Sara Smith and husband, Malcolm, Miranda, Margie and Samuel Heeter, Vanessa, Michelle and Robert Carter, Rebecca and Benjamin Gill, Shawn, Cassie and Megan Bagwell, Natalie Cannon and Andrew, Taylor and Kyle Wood; and four great-grandchildren, Logan and Brooke Smith, Alfonso and Mary Jane Gill; sister, Delores Tufts; and brother, Richard Miranda of California; brother-in-law, David Gill of Tennessee. GILLILAND -- Dorothy E. Gilliland, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2003. She was a kind, loving individual who always touched the heart of everyone she met. She always had an uplifted spirit and never let anything get her down. She enjoyed traveling, crafts, bingo, spending time with her family, and walking her dog, 'Monica". Dorothy was born on October 31, 1914 in Butte, MT to parents who had immigrated to the United States from England. She and her family later moved to Martinez, CA, where she lived for many years. Dorothy later followed Bill (her husband), and his career with the Santa Fe Railroad, to Prescott, AZ, where they lived for several years. Later on, she and Bill again relocated to Gallup, NM, where they resided for over 27 years. While living there, Dorothy worked for Dr. Sellard, an optometrist and jeweler. Upon her husband's retirement, Dorothy and Bill moved to Albuquerque to be closer to their daughter, Geraldine and her family. Dorothy lived in Albuquerque for 25 years. She was a member of Del Norte Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Gutowski; granddaughter, Lynn Gutowski; grandson, Alan Gutowski, his wife, Beverly, and son, Nicholas; nephew, Bill Ernest; grandniece, Stacy Ernest; grandnephew, Andrew Ernest; and her dog and faithful companion, Monica. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Gilliland; parents, William and Fanny Ernest; brother, Fred Ernest; and nephew, Kenneth Ernest. KONDOURAS -- Nancy Kondouras, 66, died on Monday, September 1, 2003. LARSON -- Elnora L. Larson, 66, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 29, 2003. She is survived by her husband, Don Larson of the family home; sons, David Larson of Tucson, AZ and Shawn Larson and wife, Jenny of Rio Rancho; daughter, Nicole Sessions of Salt Lake, UT; grandson, Timothy Martellini; sisters, Barbara Hegman and husband, Glenn, Bonnie Follmar and Ruthann Gordon and husband, Trey. Mrs. Larson was preceded in death by her sons, Dennis and Douglas Larson and daughter, Lois Larson. Mrs. Larson was a member of Faith Chapel since the mid sixties and had a strong relationship with her Lord. She was involved in Church Choir and music was a big part of her life. Mrs. Larson is also remembered for her beautiful collection of dolls and the clothing she sewed for them. She also enjoyed sewing clothes for her family, and as a foster mother, she also would sew clothes for families who were in need. Mrs. Larson was also a lover of cats and has had several over the years. She was a longtime member and officer of the T.O.P.S. organization. Elnora was well loved by her many friends as well as by new acquaintances because of her quietly unassuming nature, disarming smile and terrific sense of humor. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 6, at 10:00 at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel with Nelson McBride officiating. LEONARD -- Zella Leonard, 102, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Wednesday, September 3, 2003. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Louise Leonard of Albuquerque and Margaret Sabo and husband, William of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Judith Gerald and husband, Lanny, Bonita Louise Dinham and husband, Dana, Michael Johnston of Virginia, and Michelle Johnston of San Francisco, CA; eight great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; niece, Karen Wilt of Hollidaysburg, PA; nephew, James Lee Endress; and son-in-law, Melvin Johnston of Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milo Leonard; daughter, Dolores Johnston; grandson, William Sabo; parents, Wesley and Ida Cartwright Endress and brother, Leroy Endress. Mrs. Leonard was born in Frankstown, PA in a log cabin that was a trading post for the Delaware Susqehannah Indians. She loved fishing and was still fishing at the age of 92. Mrs. Leonard enjoyed playing the piano and organ and as a young girl played in the church. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. Mrs. Leonard was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her. MARTIN -- Charles "Chuck" W. Martin, 66, a New Mexico resident since 1958, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. Chuck was born April 21, 1937, in Lowell, Mass., the son of George W. and Hilda Bedford Martin, Jr. He was an accountant for several years, retiring from Johnstone Supply. Chuck served in the U.S. Air Force. He loved to play golf, was a Boston Red Sox fan and an avid reader. Chuck was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ginger Martin; daughter, Cynthia Martin; and former wife, Mary Martin. Chuck is survived by his "granddaughter," Vickie Tellier; and "great grandson," Jeffrey Martin Moretti; and longtime dear friend, Marilyn Wackerbarth, all of Albuquerque; eight brothers and sisters, Elise Martin, George Martin and wife, Bernie, Mary Damery and husband, Joe, Steve Martin, Ted Martin, Sandra Ramey and husband, Scott, Jimmy Martin and wife, Marianne and Glenn Martin; along with several nieces and nephews, all of the Eastern United States. MASSAGLI -- Dorothy Massagli, 79, a resident of Albuquerque for 35 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 2, 2003 with family and friends at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Massagli; and a daughter, Loren Massagli Weber. MORROW -- Betty Ruth Morrow, age 76, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, in Ruidoso, New Mexico. She was the daughter of two pioneer New Mexico families who homesteaded in San Miguel and Union counties. Betty Ruth was born to Clinton Harrison Morrow and Beulah Eudocia (Findley) Morrow on September 20, 1926, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Findley, Joel and Jack Morrow. Betty graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1944 and attended Virginia Intermont College and the University of New Mexico. She worked in retail sales, public relations and property management. Betty is survived by her children Beth Lee and husband Ron of Custer, South Dakota; Joel Pafford and wife Joelyn of Raton, New Mexico; and Patrick Pafford and wife Gloria of Hondo, New Mexico, as well as by her grandchildren Patrick Allen, Brea Pafford, Brent Pafford, Zachary Pafford and Tammy Pafford, and step-grandson Erik Lee. Betty is also survived by her great-grandson Justin Kase Duncan and step-great-grandchildren Kori, Breanna and Heather Lee; by her aunt Fay Hays, sister-in-law Hazel Morrow Stormo, and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty was an active member of First Baptist Church in Albuquerque from 1935-86, and had resided in Hondo, New Mexico, from 1986 until her death. She was active in the San Patricio Citizens’ Center. “Betsy” had a sparkle in her eye and a wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed by her loving family. NAU -- Donald Eugene Nau, 61, joined his wife, Cheryl in heaven on August 28th 2003. Don is survived by his two sons, Robert Nau with wife, Valerie of Silverdale Wa, and Michael Nau of Azle, TX as well as close companion, Sharon Henchle, (Sonphew) Joseph Render with wife, Shonda and son, Jared; mother, Suzanne; brothers, Richard and Chris; sisters, Carol, Charlene, Janie and Mary.,Don was an active member of The Church of the Risen Savior as well as the Knights of Columbus, where he gained many friends and well wishers. A Service will be dedicated to Don at The Church of the Risen Savior on Thursday the 4th of September at 6:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

ORTEGA -- Mr. Frank S. "Jelly" Ortega died Wednesday, September 03, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 77. Mr. Ortega was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. He was born and lived in Old Town. He was a good husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a semi-pro baseball player and a Senior softball player. Honored with an induction into the State Hall of Fame, Mr. Ortega also competed in the Senior Olympics and received a Silver Medal. He was a avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing were among his passions. He was also an oil painter. Mr. Ortega was a World War II Navy Veteran and served two hitches. He is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Ramona Ortega. Surviving relatives include his wife, Maria Dolores Ortega; sons, Anthony R. Gonzales, Frank I. Ortega and wife, Nancy, Enriquiez Hank Ortega and wife, Angie; daughters, Loretta A. Garcia and husband, Tom, and Rosarita D. Archuleta and husband, Anthony; sister, Angela O. Chavez and husband, Joe; brothers, Theodore Ortega and wife, Genieve, and David Ortega; 11 grandchildren;three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mr. Ortega will be held on Friday, September 5, 2003 at San Felipe De Neri Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Burial will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. A Reception will follow. Pallbearers will be Francisco Ortega, J.T. Garcia, Manuel Ortega, Aaron Archuleta, Salvador Gonzales and Theodore Ortega. ROBERSON -- Lucy T. Roberson, 86, died in her sleep on Saturday, August 30,2003 at the Loving Light Center Shelter Care home in Rio Rancho following a lengthy illness. Lucy was born in Fairfield, Alabama on June 9, 1917 to Bess and George Taylor. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Birmingham Southern College in 1937 and began her career as a teacher. She later achieved a Master's Degree from the University of New Mexico. Lucy taught 8th grade math at Monroe Junior High School in Albuquerque during the 1950's and 60's and then became the school counselor there. She retired from the Albuquerque Public Schools in the early 70's and Lucy and her husband Cecil moved to Rio Rancho. She will be remembered by many ex-students as one of their favorite teachers. Lucy and Cecil loved to travel together and did so often. They were part of the founding group of sponsors for the Teen-Age Tours and on several occasions traveled with Friendship Force. After retirement they enjoyed spending a month each Spring in Spain. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and both of her siblings, Sam Taylor and Marjorie Walker. Lucy is survived by her husband of 64 years, Cecil (Robby) T. Roberson, daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Milt Stelzer, and granddaughter and family, Lisa, Greg and Allison May, all of Rio Rancho. A Memorial Service for Lucy will be held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 2701 The American Road SE, Rio Rancho on Friday, September 5, 2003 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Jeannine E. Lamb officiating. SCHUMANN -- Mary "Marie" Elizabeth Schumann, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 15 years, and moving here from Manhasset Hills, NY, died August 30, 2003. She was born March 19, 1927 to Richard R. Coughlin and Elizabeth Kealy Coughlin in New York, NY. She was a guidance counselor for 38 years for the New York P.S. 145, Brooklyn, NY. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rio Rancho and the San-Bern Federated Republican Women as well as the Navy League. Mary is survived by her husband, O. Douglas; sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Monteleone; nephews, Lance and Stewart, and niece Olga Monteleone all of Houston,TX. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho with the Rosary being recited at 7:30 PM. SIMPSON -- William D. Simpson lost his battle with cancer on August 31, 2003. He lived his life as a gentle man, kind, caring and considerate of all the Earth's creatures. He is survived by his wife, Diane; two children, Clint and Lisa; six grandchildren; mother; brother; sister; three nephews and one niece. He served his country by joining the Navy choosing to go to submarine school. After four years and several tours of duty at sea during the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged and returned to his home in Texas. he was graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas. A longtime member of the American Society for Quality, he was an ASQ Certified Quality Assurance engineer. He loved his work and was a loyal employee at Zia Laser, Inc. in Albuquerque. Bill was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and a caring friend. This gentle man was a true gentleman and will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. SMITH -- "Penny" Rosalie Joan Smith, age 65, left us to be with the Lord on August 30, 2003. Penny is survived by her husband, Joe Smith, of 43 years; her daughters, Debi Bartucci and husband, Pat, Dedi Smith-Van Winkle, and husband, Russ; and her beloved grandchildren, Zane and Grant Van Winkle. She is also survived by her niece, Melissa Finley; her sister, Kathy Finley and husband, Bob; her brother, Chuck Franks; and nephews, Earl Franks and Chuck Franks III and niece, Kathy Franks; her step-granddaughter, Kellie Bartucci-Williams and great-granddaughter, Peyton Williams, one Aunt, Marie McDowell, and many many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosalie and Charles Franks. Penny was a friend to so many, giving communion and comfort at the Rehab Center and working tirelessly in the family owned business, Statewide Products Co., Inc. Penny was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, St. Joseph's Auxiliary, and Casa Angelica. She was a member of Tanoan Country Club where she golfed with the "Niners". For many years, she and her friends, Kay Sullivan, Barbara Pluemer and Bonnie Bright owned Al La Carte Tours. In later years she and Joe toured many countries with their friends, Bill and Kay Sullivan, Jim and Mary Lipscomb, and highschool friends, Joan and Larry Ropa. She had an intense love for her family and friends and was always there for them. Penny Smith, loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend-you will so be missed Dear Penny. Visitation will be held Wednesday September 3, 2003, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in Palm Chapel at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. TOWNSEND -- James "Jim" M. Townsend, 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003. He is survived by his sister, Juanita Thiebault of Pascagaula, MS, and his special lady, Amanda Johnson and her mother Sandy Hosier. James was born in Philadelphia, MS and served his country in the US Air Force and the Army having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He had a spice and zest for life and a love of the finer things. James enjoyed his quite home life and loved his neighbors as well.
