Arellano -- Hellen S. Arellano went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Helen was married to Nemey Arellano on February 6, 1945 while Nemey was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Nemey Arellano; son, Richard (Rick) Arellano; daughters, Kathee Macias and husband, Vince, Suzanne Ciardella and husband, Roy. Hellen had four grandchildren, Chad and Brooke Wilson and Nolan and Nathan Ciardella. She is also survived by her best friend and dear sister, Donna Rebensdorf and husband, Bill; sister-in-law, Nina Stevens and several nieces and nephews. Hellen was preceded in death by her parents, Donald E. Stevens and Flora Santistevan Stevens and also by her brother, Ted Stevens. Hellen graduated from Taos High School in 1942. After her marriage to Nemey, the couple lived in Wisconsin for two years and in California for 38 years, before returning to New Mexico to live out their retirement in 1993. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, extended family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Joseph Dr. NW, Friday, May 2, 2003, 10:00 a.m. with Father Frank Prieto, Celebrant. Baca -- Joseph"Bico" Baca, a resident of Manhattan Beach, CA died Saturday, March 22, 2003 at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was 70 years old. Joe was born September 18, 1932 in Albuquerque and raised in Santa Fe, NM. He served in the 726 AAA Battalion, Headquarters Battery, during the Korean Conflict. In 1967, while employed as a Production Engineer at TRW, he met his wife, Sue. They were married for 28 years. After retiring from TRW ten and half years ago, he and his wife spent time traveling and enjoying many hobbies. Joe became a Master Wood-carver and carved many cowboys and St. Francis statutes. He was also famous for his unique chile. Family and friends came from all around when he made it. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 28 years, Sue; their children, Pam and Mark Shaw and their children, Jason, Amy and Kyle; Rick and Linda Baca and their children, Robby, Joe and Nathan; Lori and Spike Howard and their children, Michael, Chad and Jenni; Michael and Gina Mulligan and their children, Christina, Michael and Christopher; Bill and Debbie Mulligan and their children, Bill and Jamie; brothers, Alfredo Baca of Santa Fe, Robert and wife, Annette Baca of Albuquerque; many nieces and nephews; and his precious kitty, Chasen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Lavina Baca; and his brothers, Buddy Baca and Jack Baca. Funeral Mass was said Thursday, March 27, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church, 624 15th St. in Manhattan Beach. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM, on Friday, May 2, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial Reception to follow.

Borstel -- Arthur Gordon Borstel, age 85, a resident of Albuquerque died April 30, 2003. Survivors include his daughters, Sandra Saxton of Houston, TX, Robin Bolduc of Surprise, AZ, Irene Borstel-Bush of Albuquerque; son, David Borstel of Denver, CO; sister, Marion Seiberg of Los Angeles, CA; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; cousin, Herbie White. Arthur was a member of Congregation B'Nai Israel and he belonged to the Hiram Lodge 13, past master, Shriner, Legion of Honor and the DAV Chapter 33. Services will be held 8:00 a.m., Friday, May 2, 2003 at Congregation B'Nai Israel 4401 Indian School Rd. NE with Rabbi Arthur W. Flicker and Cantor Michael A. Dzubin officiating. Chapman -- Patricia L."Pat" Chapman, 69, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Monday, April 28, 2003. She is survived by her husband, Howard D. Chapman of Albuquerque; sons, Howard A. Chapman and wife, Glenna, and Mike Chapman, all of Albuquerque; daughter, Susan Considine and husband, Michael of Dayton, OH; and sister, Mary Hubbie Dailey of Dover, DE. Pat loved to travel and took great pleasure in bringing back mementos and tales of her adventures. Her most recent trip was to Hawaii where at 69 she was kayaking and hiking. In her fifties, she went back to school, obtained an Associates Degree in Counseling. Pat was a volunteer for the Rape Crisis Center before she began a career as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor. She was a well-respected Counselor and was known for her sage advice. All who knew her will remember her as an avid Cardinal baseball fan, a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend. Pat embraced life and all it had to offer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 5301 Ponderosa Av. NE. Chowning -- William"Bill" Chowning, USA (Ret.), 82, a resident of New Mexico since 1958, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Louise Chowning of Moriarty, NM; son, Patrick Chowning and wife, Wendy of Fallbrook, CA; daughter, Luanne Chowning of Albuquerque; son, Ralph Chowning and wife, Kathy of Moriarty, NM; grandson, Todd Chowning of Corrales, NM; granddaughter, Michelle Clark of Albuquerque; grandson, Tommy Clark of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Valerie Raskob and husband, Chris of Columbus, IN; grandson, Clayton Chowning of Moriarty, NM; and great-grandchildren, Chaz Clark of Albuquerque and Micaela Clark of Temecula, CA; brother, Bob Chowning of Davenport, OK. Freeby -- Mary Freeby, 85, a native and lifetime resident of Gallup, NM, died April 29, 2003 in Albuquerque. She was born on January 21, 1918 in Gallup. She is survived by her husband, Cecil of Albuquerque; sons, Robert of Tacoma, WA, Richard of Albuquerque, Roger of Denver, CO; four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Minnie of Albuquerque; nieces, Norma of Belen, Mary of San Antonio, TX, and Rafael of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benedetto and Caterina Catgenova, immigrants from the Canavese region of Piemonte, Italy and longtime Gallup residents. Mrs. Freeby was always proud of her Catholic faith and Italian heritage and was a lifetime parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. She had been an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Legion of Mary and the Third Orders of Saint Francis. She also directed the former Sacred Heart Day School for children of working or single mothers in connection with her parish activities. She was a longtime employee of the City of Gallup, served on the library board, was an active participant at the Senior Citizens' Center, and for many years was a member of the Knitting Club, which included a large number of lifetime friends. Gonzales -- Bentura A. Gonzales, 85, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2003. He was a member of the San Clemente Catholic Church and the VFW. He was a very religious man who loved gardening and the outdoors. He proudly served his country in the U S Army during WWII in the South Pacific Theatre. He retired from the Federal Government with 30 years of dedicated service as a security officer. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard in 1961; his parents, Bentura Sr. and Lupe Gonzales; one brother, Alberto in 2003 and one sister, Mary Stogden. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Anita of the family home; three sons, Jerry and his wife, Karen of Flagstaff, AZ, Ben and his wife, Judy of Davis, CA, Johnny and his wife, Gloria of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Elena Ramirez of Roswell, NM. Gonzales -- Tony Gonzales, 63, born in Clayton, NM and a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed away on April 30, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Viola M. Gonzales; son, Raymond Gonzales; two daughters, Theresa M. Kephart and husband, Howard and Diana V. Griego -- Teodoro "Ted" Griego died Friday, April 18, 2003 in Chandler, Arizona surrounded by his family. He was 65 years old, born to Juan Bautista and Celina (Tapia) Griego on July 23, 1937 in Tapia, New Mexico. He was the third eldest of thirteen children. He is survived by his wife, Mary Faye Griego; sons, Ted Griego, John Griego, Kenneth Griego (Stacey); and two granddaughters, Hannah and Sarah Griego. A Mass and burial will be held at La Morada de San Jose, 2100 La Vega Rd SW, Albuquerque, at 1:00 p.m. on May 3, 2003.

Gutierrez -- Gabriel "Gabe" Gutierrez, age 82, was born in San Antonio, NM, raised in Magdalena and Socorro, and a 60 year resident of Albuquerque, entered into eternal rest on April 26, 2003 following a long illness with diabetes and cancer. Born May 2, 1920, he attended school in Socorro. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Army during World War II. He had many professions including laborer, janitor, cook, construction worker, and he operated his own gas station business for many years. He ran the Beeline Gas Station on Central west of 14th street, where Duran's Pharmacy is now located. The Federal Government Civil Service at Kirtland Air Force Base employed him where he retired at the age of 65 as construction engineer. Gabriel was the loving and fifth child born to the late Jose Elias Gutierrez and Rafelita Maes-Gutierrez. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Damian Gutierrez, Precilio Gutierrez, and Luciano Gutierrez; sisters, Ida Gutierrez and Clara Gutierrez; sons, Eloy R. Gutierrez and Gabriel R. Gutierrez; granddaughter, Kristy Lucille; sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Grace A. Gutierrez; two daughters, Reverend Lucille and her husband, Bill, Judy Sarabia and her husband, Reverend Jerry; son, Robert E. Gutierrez; grandsons, Terrance Richardson, David Sarabia and his wife, Nelda, Sammy Sarabia, Aaron Sarabia, Gabriel Sarabia, and Angel Gutierrez; granddaughters, Ruby Mustra and her husband, Earl, Rachel Sarabia, Priscilla Sarabia, Roberta Gutierrez, and Robin Gutierrez; great-grandchildren, Kristy and Kyle Mustra; sister, Mary Cordova; brothers-in-law, Delfine Rodriguez and Carpio Montoya; sisters-in-law, Mary Lopez and husband, Willie, Florinda Sandoval, Eva Rodriguez; and many nieces and nephews, as well as longtime friends Lorenzo Chavez, Gussie Booker, Andy Garcia, Benny Vigil, Norma Cigolle, Abraham Santana, Eloy Vera and wife Helen, Candelario Barela, Lee Pacheco, Charlie Tapia, Serilio Garcia and wife, Molly, and Seferino Saiz and wife, Mercy. Jones -- G. Allen Jones, 54, beloved husband, father, brother and son, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003. Allen touched the lives of all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and co-workers. He was born December 7, 1948 in Oklahoma, to Gene Allen and Kathryn P. Jones. After graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Allen served his country at various bases around the world. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Alison Crompton; daughter, Lindsay Jones; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Yvette Jones; mother, Kathryn P. Jones; sister, M. Francie Stevens; and mother-in-law, Cora Crompton. He is also survived by loving in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Allen; his brother, Gaylyn Floyd; and his infant son, Scott Crompton Jones. Allen served faithfully in various callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His happiest times were working in the church and being with his family. He loved playing golf with his son and watching his daughter play softball. For the past 12 years, Allen had been employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory where he made many lasting friendships. Services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at the San Victorio L.D.S. Chapel, 11750 San Victorio NE, with Bishop Robert Hall presiding. Kennedy -- Jack J. Kennedy, an Irish American Catholic, finished his life Tuesday, April 29, 2003. He will be joining his sons, Jay and Billy, with their heavenly father. Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Florence, of 57 years; his daughter, Muffin Kennedy Menicucci and husband, John and grandchildren, John, Janea Menicucci-Albers, Joseph and Jason Menicucci; daughter Pinkie Kennedy Neff and husband, Greg and grandchildren, Paula Neff Jernigan, Tricia Neff Sena, Kim and Steven, all of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Mary Blake and grandson, Jay Kennedy of Missouri. His sister, Dorothy Kennedy Farley of Plainfield, IL; brother-in-law, George Schoenfeld of Fort Meyers, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews, also survive Jack. Jack grew up in LaGrange, IL. He attended LT Jr. College and Northwestern University. Jack served in the US Army signal core in WWII. Jack was an accountant and worked for NM State government as a Director of Minerals for New Mexico Land Office until his retirement. Jack was an usher at Annunciation Church for over 30 years. He was the first President of the Annunciation Holy Name Society. He served as President of the Pius Home and School Association, The Serra Club, Sertoma Club, The Hibernian Association, New Mexico Mining Association and many other civic organizations. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He had a great sense of humor, and always had a smile on his face. He greeted everyone with Top of the Morning to you, its a beautiful day in Chicago. Golfing, bowling, fishing and watching numerous sporting events were among his favorite activities. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont NE, with Rev. Ronald L. Bruckner, Celebrnt. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Menicucci, Jr., Joseph Menicucci, Jason Menicucci, Patrick Albers, Stephen Neff, Brian Menicucci, and Kevin Menicucci. Lucero -- Mr. Louie G. Lucero, also known as"Valico" to many friends, 74, a resident of Raton, NM, went to his resting place with the angels on April 26, 2003. He was born February 26, 1929 in Albuquerque. He was met at Heaven's gate by his parents, Oronzo and Eutimia Lucero, and brother, Joe Lucero. Louie is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Elizabeth"Lizzie" Lucero; one daughter, Anita Lucero and Richard Sanchez of Albuquerque; sons, Rudy and wife, Kathy of Albuquerque, Ronnie and wife, Liz of Albuquerque, Patrick Lucero and Georgia Garcia of Raton; brother, Elias Lucero and wife, Rose; sister, Lucy Ubena and husband, Juan and their son, Transito Montoya, all of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Miller -- Virginia Leigh"Ginny" Miller passed away suddenly at her home in Houston, Texas on April 28, 2003, at the age of 41. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Miller; sister, Katie Benedict and husband, Richard and his son, Tony; niece, Amanda Prouty and husband, Chris; and their sons, Brendyn and Caleb; all of Texas; also her aunt, Judi Sinks; and cousin, Steve Westman both of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her father, Louis C. Miller; and grandparents,"Chisel" and"Jerry" Smith. Ginny was a graduate of Cibola High School and attended the University of New Mexico. She was also a member of the N.M. Arabian Horse Association, and a 1979 Senorita at the N.M. Symphony Ball. Born and raised in Albuquerque, she moved to Texas in the 1980's where she made many friends. Her family will miss her deeply. By request there will be a cremation and no service. Charles W. Saavedra -- Gail Griffith Saavedra, 65, died of cancer at her home on Sunday, April 27, 2003. She was the daughter of Arthur R. Griffith and the late Margaret B. Griffith of Carlsbad, NM. A resident of Albuquerque since 1960, she developed and directed the first volunteer program at Albuquerque's Main Library from 1975 to 1978, and was an elementary school counselor in the Albuquerque Public Schools from 1978 until her retirement in 1995. Her greatest pride was her family: husband, Louis; son, Ralph and wife, Rachel and their sons, Stephen and Gabriel; daughter, Laura and husband, David Buckley and their children, Aidan and Elena; daughter, Barbara and her fiance, Michael Risher; cousin, Karen Griffith; and many other relatives. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and by her valued friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in Albuquerque on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at 2:00 p.m., at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle Blvd. NE. Sullivan -- Genevieve"Jenny" L. Sullivan, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harley T. Sullivan of Albuquerque; son, Larry Sullivan and wife, Donna of Albuquerque; daughter, Kathy Sullivan Barnicoat and husband, Ken of Santa Teresa, NM; grandson, Sean Sullivan of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reni and Kunie VanBelleghem; and two sisters, Katy Miller and Marie Czajkowski. Mrs. Sullivan was an active member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church where she was involved with the Golden Agers and many other parish functions. She volunteered many hours helping the elderly with daily activities. Above all, she was a caring wife and a loving mother who put the needs and cares of her family before all others, including herself. Mrs. Sullivan leaves her family with a lifetime of memories that will live on in their hearts forever and always. Rosary will be recited Friday, May 2, 2003, at 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 8:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Claremont and Vermont NE. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Taylor -- Elsie M. Taylor passed away on April 26, 2003 at the age of 90. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel of Sunrise, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE. Vargas -- Mary B. Vargas, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003. She is survived by her sons, David A. Vargas and wife, Norma, Marty Vargas and wife, Cara, Richard Vargas and Tony Vargas; Lawrence Vargas and wife, Terry; daughters, Pat Tarrend and husband, Dix, Rita Vargas and Debbie Vargas; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; sister, Louise Garcia; brother, Gilbert Baca and wife, Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, David H. Vargas, father, Nester Baca, stepfather, Nep Lueras, mother Dolores Lueras, son, Michael Lueras, and granddaughter, Monica Vargas. Mrs. Vargas was born February 18, 1923 in Vaughn, NM. She attended University of New Mexico and received bilingual endorsement. Mrs. Vargas was one of the first state educators to assist in teaching bilingual courses at East San Jose Elementary School. She retired from APS after 17 years of service. Mrs. Vargas was an active member of Anna Kaseman volunteer auxiliary, NM Red Cross, Kidney Foundation, South Broadway, East San Jose Community Centers, and LULAC Organization South Valley Chapter. She also volunteered in various Congressional, U.S. Senate, NM Governors, Presidential elections, and state and local races. She participated in the organization of the first Headstart program. During her volunteer career, Mrs. Vargas was able to meet and dine with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. She was member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and Legion of Mary. She enjoyed attending various social functions with her husband, David, traveling and reading, as well as, family gatherings. She was a wonderful compassionate wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend to many of those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Rosary will be recited Thursday, May 1, 2003, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 2, 2003, 9:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brian Vargas, Matthew Vargas, Alex Tarrand, Shawn Vargas, Raymond Tafoya, and Lawrence Charles Vargas. Villescas -- Vidal"Lala" Villescas, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died May 1, 2003. Survivors include son, Ernie O. Villescas and wife, Jan of Albuquerque; sister, Albita Jaramillo of Albuquerque, Rosita Montoya of Socorro, NM; brother, Adiel Baca of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kim Villescas of CA and Cindy Villescas of WA. Vidal was preceded in death by her husband, Basilio in 1988; as well as six brothers and sisters. She was a member of San Felipe De Neri Catholic Church and was a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Christian Mothers and volunteered at the North 4th Senior Center. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 2, 2003 in the Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2003 at San Felipe De Neri Catholic Church 2005 N. Plaza NW with Msgr. Leo Lucero, Celebrant.
