Anderson -- Carl C. Anderson, Sr. was born in Naples, OK on January 22, 1911. He peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001. One of ten children, Anderson grew up in the Oklahoma oil fields where his father was a poor teaming contractor. From these humble beginnings Carl began a life of accomplishment that exemplified the American dream. The pressing needs of his large family made hard work and long hours a necessity. When most young men were in school, Carl was learning the lifelong lessons of self-reliance, responsibility, and fierce determination. In the depths of the Depression, Carl purchased his first truck and began hauling and laying pipe for various oil companies. This led to the formation of Anderson Brothers Corporation, a pipeline contracting company. In 1941, Anderson was awarded extensive pipeline contracts for the construction of the vitally important Big Inch and Little Inch pipelines. These were used to transport oil for our military forces overseas. Anderson Brothers advanced pipelining technology with many methods they perfected, especially in the area of rock excavation. Other commendable accomplishments include two Mississippi River crossings, a dredged pipeline across Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana and one across Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. In 1955, Carl became interested in New Mexico uranium exploration. Eager to expand his operations, Anderson acquired leases on many valuable sections including the legendary Section 30, which proved to be the richest uranium section discovered at that time. He was later able to merge his interests with Kerr-McGee Corporation and became one of their major stockholders. For many years, Anderson also operated a large trucking company hauling uranium ore in the Grants, NM area. Though he was born in Oklahoma, traveled the world and found great fortune in New Mexico, Carl always considered himself a Texan. Carl was actively managing his investments until his recent illness. He was particularly proud of his commercial cattle ranching operation, the Anderson Double Arrow Ranch near Marlin, Texas. Not only did Carl have great success in the world of business, he was a treasured friend to many. His warm charisma made him welcome in any group. Carl was totally without pretense and was most comfortable among the hard working rural people who reminded him of his early life. Anyone who knew Carl has a personal story of his generous spirit and genuine kindness. Carl was a man who valued his family above all else. His long and full life included the loss of his beloved wife, Marie Jo; sons, Maxie L. and Carl Clay Jr.; and daughter, Carroll Jane. Surviving family includes daughter, Jennifer Bird of Austin; brother, Larry Anderson of Oklahoma City; sister, Lolita Lemming of Grove, Oklahoma; Central Texas grandchildren, Carl C. III, Janiece, Stephen, and Teresa; New Mexico grandsons, Michael, Kristian, and Timothy; and California granddaughters, Stephanie Pugash and Cynthia Vasquez. Anderson was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Carl's extraordinary life will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Cook Walden Funeral Home 14501 North IH 35. Instead of flowers, Carl's family would encourage you to make a contribution in his name to the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home. A giant has walked among us and we shall miss him.MRS. FLORA M. Seidler -- Helen Bert Seidler, of Albuquerque, a well-known New Mexico artist, passed away on July 13, 2001. Mrs. Seidler was born on June 9, 1919, on a farm in Buckeye Township, Kansas, to Michael and Cora Bert. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Armond Seidler; three children, Todd and Toni Seidler, both of Albuquerque, and Kim Seidler, of Chico CA; a grandson, Nolan Armond Seidler of Albuquerque; and a sister, Lois Bert Engemann, of Chicago Heights, Illinois. After Mrs. Seidlers family moved to Chicago, she earned a scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute at the age of 15. She subsequently attended the American College of Physical Education in Chicago, where she met her future husband, and graduated with bachelors and masters degrees in education from the University of Illinois. Mrs. Seidler was married in 1944 by a blind justice of the peace in Champaign, Illinois. While living in Washington, Iowa, where her husband, Armond was a high school football and basketball coach, she established and operated a successful photographic portrait studio. When her husband went to the University of Illinois as a graduate student and then faculty member, she supplemented the family income by doing photographic retouching. In 1955, Mrs. Seidler and her family moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, and in 1957 to Albuquerque. Turning once again to art, she became a successful painter, with pieces hanging in many Southwestern homes. A significant loss of vision in both eyes finally made her lay down her brush. Even though Mrs. Seidlers greatest single interest was in art, she was no less a devoted and loving wife and mother whose family misses her intensely. A Memorial for Helen Seidler will be held on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at the family home in Albuquerque.

Wilkes -- Stephen Lloyd Wilkes, Janette Susan Carter Wilkes, and their youngest son, Eliot Carter Wilkes, of Albuquerque, were killed in the crash of a small plane in Bettles, Alaska, while vacationing there with friends. Janette Carter Wilkes, born June 6, 1952, in Amarillo, Texas, was a distingushed physician, researcher, and Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. Janette grew up in Colorado and Idaho. She attended elementary school in Colorado, attended junior high school and graduated from high school in Buhl, Idaho, in 1970. She received her undergraduate degree from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, in 1974 and the Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of New Mexico in 1978. She was a Pathology Fellow at UNM-SOM in Albuquerque from 1978 to 1979, a residency in Internal Medicine from 1979 to 1982 in Sacramento, CA, and her Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at UNM-SOM in Albuquerque. Janette received additional training at the New England Epidemiology Institute. She was board certified in Internal Medicine and held medical licensure in the State of New Mexico since 1986. Janette was the Director of the Diabetes Model Project and Area Diabetes Control Officer, General Physician, Public Health Service/Indian Health Service, Albuquerque Service Unit from 1983 to 1989. She was Assistant Professor, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UNM-SOM, Department of Medicine, Primary Care Division, Albuquerque, from 1989 to 1999. At the time of her death, Janette held the position of Associate Professor with Tenure, Veterans Affairs Medical Center/UNM-SOM, Department of Medicine, Primary Care Division, and directed research in the Native American Diabetes Research Program, University of New Mexico. In 1972 Janette did independent study with Behrhorst Clinic in a small, rustic Indian village in Guatemala, working with rural populations to meet basic public health needs. This experience helped to form her deep commitment to addressing the needs of underserved and disadvantaged populations. Janette was the daughter of and is survived by Rosalie Carter of Albuquerque and LeRoy Carter, deceased. She is survived, also, by her eldest son, Alec Tomás Wilkes, 17, of Albuquerque. Stephen's father, Perry R. Wilkes, Jr., expresses that: It has been a great honor to have been the grandfather of Eliot C. Wilkes, the father-in-law of Janette Carter Wilkes and father of Stephen L. Wilkes. In their own ways, all three of these wonderful, adventurist, delightful, and dedicated individuals were warm and truly inspirational. Their involvement in the most challenging and meaningful things of life makes me think that, were they still with us, our future would be even brighter, much brighter. Without the presence of Eliot, Janette and Steve, I am moved to try harder to fulfill their dreams, as best I can. Early on, it was Steve's efforts in helping to create the Rio Grande Bosque Nature Preserve Society that started me thinking about our tremendous resources and why they need protection and enhancement. Species diversity was the focus of his vision as a vital part of public education. The Rio Grande Nature Center was one result of this initiative. Steve, Janette, Eliot, together with Alec, made their home in Albuquerque's North Valley in a community of loving neighbors and extended family, where they will be deeply missed, as they will be by countless friends and colleagues around the world. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2001 10:30 a.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John, 3rd and Silver in Albuquerque, Celebrant, Rev. Brian C. Taylor, Rector of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where the family were longtime members. A reception will immediately follow at the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association, 525 San Pedro NE, Suite 101, Albuquerque, NM 87108; The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606; Doctors Without Borders, 6 East 39th Street, 8th floor, New York, NY 10016, or the Christian Children's Fund, Inc., 28221 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294-3725.
