He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Annabel Arias; children, Donna-Marie Pechner and husband, Stuart of Maryland, Robert A. Arias and wife, Minnie of San Diego, Susan-Marie Arias of Albuquerque, Scott A. Arias and wife, Marne of Michigan and Arnie A. Bell -- Francis E. Bell (Frank), age 85, resident of Albuquerque for 50 years passed away at the Paloma Blanca Nursing Home on Monday, May 21, 2001. He was born February 7, 1916 in Olean, New York to the late Harold S. and Marion (Oakleaf) Bell. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bell of Albuquerque; two daughters, Susan Bell of Santa Fe, Katherine Koster of Sudbury, Massachusetts, and one brother, H. S. Bell Jr. of Madison, New Jersey; two grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Princeton University in 1937 where he majored in political science at the Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs. Mr. Bell was a WW II naval veteran serving in the Pacific Theater throughout the war. He survived the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, taking his destroyer to sea while under fire. Following the war he remained active in the Naval Reserve, throughout his life attaining the rank of Commander, USNR. In 1947 he married Nancy Hartshorne of East Orange, NJ. In 1951 Mr. Bell brought his family from the East to live in Albuquerque and rapidly became a passionate, enthusiastic promoter of the many cultural and natural benefits of life in New Mexico. He loved the outdoors involving the family in camping and hiking outings throughout this and neighboring states. He also enjoyed international travel visiting Europe, Mexico and South America on many occasions. He was important to his many friends in Scandinavia, England, Chile and the Eastern U.S. While living in Albuquerque he was associated with the Sandia National Laboratory where he recruited technical personnel from across the country to serve at the Laboratory. He was also involved in the Laboratory's Affirmative Action Program as well as other personnel matters. His last assignment at the Laboratory was as a member of the legal staff. His civic duties consisted of Vice President and board member of the Chaparral Girl Scout Council. He participated in major fund drives for his Alma Mater and Pitzer College, Claremont, California. He was a National Trustee and local Board Member for the Amigos de las Americas, a paramedical organization that sends youth to field experiences in Central and South America. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in the Chapel at the east entrance at 11:00 a.m. on Friday May 25, 2001. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Amigos de las Americas P.O Box 5901-J Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109 or the Presbyterian Hospice of Albuquerque. Campbell -- Victor Richard Campbell. Happy Birthday my love. You would have been 33 today, with a twinkle in your eye, a laugh in your smile, kindness in your touch and I love you from your lips. Today we celebrate you. For you were a marvelous person who touched the lives of everyone who knew you. You were a wonderful addition to this world and left behind the greatest gift, our Meiko. Thank you for loving us, making our lives complete and leaving behind the most cherished child in the universe. For without you the world and I would not have him. So, today Thomas and I will eat cake and ice cream and celebrate our V. When we look up at the stars in the sky we will know that the angels are celebrating too. Carleton -- Colonel Linwood "Woody" Carleton (USA Ret.) 1917-2001, a Belen resident for 27 years, died Sunday, May 13, 2001. Born in Maine, Woody entered the US Army at age 25. He landed on "Omaha Beach" in Normandy and fought his way through France where he quickly rose to the rank of company commander of an infantry rifle company and earned the nickname "Hard Rock". He fought in the"Battle of the Bulge" and then on through Germany, his unit ending its WWII campaign in Czechoslovakia. He went on to serve 26 years, ending his military career as a full colonel earning the peace time medal"The Legion of Merit", his final posting being Chief of Communications for the US Army Chief of Staff, the Pentagon. His non-military achievements include Realtor/broker in the Belen area, 3rd degree Master Mason, trophy trout, a sweet golf swing, his marriage of 52 years to his wife, Bette, and their three children. He is survived by two brothers, Daniel and Ronald Carleton; his wife, Bette; a son, Skip (LA. Jr.); two daughters, Leslie Carleton and Lisa Mowery; and five grandsons. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Following the Services, the family will be receiving at the Belen home. Donations can be made in Woody's name to the American Lung Association or the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Chavez -- Alice P. Chavez, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1941, passed away Friday, May 18, 2001, at a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Seledon N. Chavez; parents, Nicolas and Rumaldita Pacheco; and brothers, Florenio and Juan Pacheco. She is survived by her daughter, Louisa and husband, Rev. Jesus G. Bermudez of Albuquerque; sisters, Beatrice and husband, Florentino Lopez of Bosque, NM, Libby Pacheco of Albuquerque, Lily and husband, Jerry Jaramillo of Lancaster, CA and Betty Barela of Belen; brother, Gilly B. Pacheco of Albuquerque; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church and an active member of United Methodist Women. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church, 700 Granite NW, with Rev. Jesus Bermudez officiating. Clow -- Leonore Virginia (Rome) Clow, a resident of Albuquerque since 1984, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2001 in the company of her husband, children and grandchildren. Mrs. Clow was born on August 8, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI. She is survived by her husband, James Martin Clow of Albuquerque; daughters, Diane Leonore Weber and husband, Tom of Pullman, WA and Kathleen Clow of Sandia Park, NM; sons, James Anthony Clow of Las Cruces, NM and Michael Raymond Clow and wife, Donna of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Michael Andrew Clow, Christianna Leigh Clow and Ashley Danielle Clow, all of Rio Rancho, NM; sister, Viona Dunn of Milwaukee, WI; numerous nieces and nephews in Milwaukee. Her parents, Johanna Walcher and Joseph Rome, a brother, Edgar and a sister Dorothy Schultz preceded her in death. Leonore trained as a transcriptionist and worked with the telephone company in Milwaukee, WI during WWII. She was married to James Martin Clow, whom she had known since the second grade, on March 21, 1945 in Wichita Falls, TX after James' return from the war where he served as a 1st LT and pilot of a B-26 bomber in the Mediterranean Theater. In 1947, James and Leonore moved to Los Alamos, NM where they lived until 1984. She enjoyed hiking and snowshoeing in the Jemez Mountains with a local hiking group. Mrs. Clow was very involved with her children's activities, serving as Brownie Troup and Girl Scout Troup Leader, den mother for the Cub Scouts and an avid volunteer at sporting events. After retirement in Albuquerque she enjoyed attending local arts and craft exhibits and antique buying trips with her daughter. Leonore enjoyed baking and for many years made dozens of cookies at Christmas, many of them from her mother's recipes. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas and Tennessee, NE with Father Luis Jaramillo, celebrant. Cone -- Greg Cone, 53, a resident of Albuquerque died Saturday, May 19, 2001, having valiantly battled cancer for 18 years. Greg was senior patent attorney for Sandia National Laboratory, a Viet Nam Veteran, gentleman farmer, an avid outdoorsman with a great zest for life. Greg ran a half marathon to celebrate his fiftieth birthday which exemplifies his commitment to health and the joyous pursuit of physical excellence. Greg's two greatest passions were wife, Melinda; and eleven year old daughter, Hannah. Greg and Melinda shared many projects together such as building hay bale fences, planting an orchard and many other tangible demonstrations of their love for each other and the home they built together. He was an adoring husband. Greg shared his love of the outdoors and his great curiosity with daughter, Hannah; rock-climbing, skiing, fishing, and even building a telescope. He was an adoring father. Greg loved his work and co-workers from Sandia National Laboratories, where work, intellect, humor and a sense of camaraderie were shared. Greg valued life, it showed in his volunteer efforts with Mountain Rescue. Greg is remembered for his easy smile, his brilliant mind, his great laugh and an incredible talent at the backyard grill. Greg is survived by wife, Melinda; daughter, Hannah; mother-in-law, Shirley Asolas; and Melinda's three brothers and their families, Jim, Brett and Renee; Nick, Kathy, and Andrew; Brad, Sandi, Nicholas, Brianna and Danielle; cousins and innumerable wonderful friends and co-workers. Cooper -- Mary Cooper, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2001. She was born August 4, 1912 in Pryor, Oklahoma and as a young child made the journey with her late parents, Oscar and Clara Mae Bassett, to homestead in Venus, NM, now known as Edgewood. Mary will be remembered as a loving, kind, and caring lady, more concerned for everyone else's well being than her own. The eldest of six children, she took on many family responsibilities, including caring for their widowed mother for many years. Throughout her life as long as she was able, she continued the role of caregiver. If she couldn't offer her home or her time, she used the telephone to check on loved ones that concerned her, including her two dear close brothers, Elmer and George Bassett, who both preceded her in death. Surviving are sisters; Linnie Malott of San Dimas, California, Eunice King of Amarillo, Texas; brother Carl Bassett of Edgewood; sisters-in-law, Loyce Fullingim of Albuquerque and Iona Patton of Morgan Hill, California. Buster, her beloved husband of 66 years, preceded her in death three years prior, but in the same month and day, May 16, 1998. Their son, Ray preceded her in death on May 27, 2000. Surviving are daughters; Vivian and husband, Ron Ohnleiter of Albuquerque, Beverly and husband, Doug Davis of Ft. Worth, TX; and daughter-in-law, Janie Cooper of Albuquerque. She was a loving and devoted Grandmother to; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Mary was also Aunt to many nieces and nephews. She captured many hearts and was loved by everyone involved in her care. Many new wonderful people came into her life during her illness, and her daughters wish to express their gratitude for the loving care given Mary, and for the compassion and support shown to them during this difficult time. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2001, 1:30p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd N.E. with, Pastor George Morris, officiating. Garlin -- Russell Garlin, 93, passed away March 20, 2001 and was buried in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. He was born August 25, 1907 in Duncannon, PA. He is survived by his daughter, Janice Richards and husband, David of Albuquerque and by a son, Russell Garlin II and wife, Zoe of Gilbert, AZ; six grandchildren, Bill and Susan Garlin of AZ, Tom and Ted Garlin of Maryland, Elizabeth Dahlinger and husband, Kent and Craig Richards and wife, Joyce of Albuquerque; and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd, 7:00 p.m. at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy NE. A reception will follow at the church. Gerdes -- Delila C. Gerdes, born to parents Clyda Mae and Charles M. Crocker on January 8, 1915, in Corpus Christi, Texas died Monday in Albuquerque. She is survived by her son, Dick Gerdes of Las Vegas, Nevada, and her two grandchildren, Nicole and Jeffery Gerdes, both of Albuquerque. Delila outlived six brothers and sisters, all of whom lived in the Corpus Christi area. After growing up and marrying Hubert C. Gerdes in Corpus Christi, Delila had two sons, Tony (deceased) and Dick, both born in the same city. Mr. Gerdes worked in the oil business and was eventually transferred to Calgary, Canada, where the family lived until his death in 1963. As a widow, Delila spent the rest of her life living in Corpus Christi, Lawrence, Kansas, and finally, Albuquerque. She spent the last four years living comfortably at the Valle Norte Caring Center, where she interacted happily with the management and staff. Gronewald -- Elmer Gronewald, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1957, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty Gronewald of Albuquerque; son, Pat Gronewald and Daneen of Albuquerque; daughter, Patricia Key of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Afton Gronewald, Maggie Gronewald, and Joshua Easley; brothers, John Gronewold and wife, Earlene of Decatur, IL and Joe Gronewold and wife, Mary of Avon, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his eight sisters and two brothers. Mr. Gronewald was a member of Church of The Good Shepherd, Western Teamsters Local 492, and the National Rifle Association. Higginbotham -- Ewell Edward Higginbotham, Jr., Hig, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glenna Higginbotham of Albuquerque; daughters, Carolyn Cleveland and husband, Tom of Elephant Butte, Gloria Gooch, Kathryn Higginbotham, Sue Bercovitch and husband, Steve, and Ellen Gilbert and husband, Joe, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Shannon Doran, Greg Gooch, Tawny Statzer, Jenny Gilbert, Lynzee Gilbert, Joey Gilbert, Philip Bercovitch, and Matthew Bercovitch; great-grandchildren, Kassidee Statzer, Emily Statzer, Alina Gooch, and Juliette Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Cahill and brother, George Higginbotham. Mr. Higginbotham was a very generous, kind, and loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew him. He was born in Sherman, TX where he graduated from high school. Mr. Higginbotham attended Texas A & M. He married Glenna Allen on July 19, 1941. He entered the United States Navy in which he proudly served until his honorable discharge in March of 1946. After his discharge, the family moved to Los Alamos where he was a security guard at AEC until going into the moving business in 1953. They moved to Albuquerque in 1957 purchasing Dalton Mayflower Moving and Storage. In 1965, he purchased part interest in Ralston Oil Company from which he retired in 1982. He loved playing golf all around the world and made a hole-in-one at Four Hills Country Club. Hig enjoyed playing seniors baseball, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Four Hills Country Club and First Baptist Church. Graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2001, 3:30 p.m., at Sandia Memory Gardens, 9500 San Pedro Dr. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Pallbearers will be Matthew Bercovitch, Philip Bercovitch, Steve Bercovitch, Joe Gilbert, Joey Gilbert, and Tom Cleveland. Jones -- June Fischer Jones, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1971, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. June was born on June 10, 1909 in Vincennes, IN. She was raised in St. Louis, MO and graduated from Harris Teachers College. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Olson and husband, John of Albuquerque; sons, Gordon Jones and wife, Margaret of Antioch, TN and Robert Jones and wife, Nancee of Starkville, TN; grandchildren, Gwyneth Olson of San Mateo, CA, Paul Olson and wife, Sandra Fortier of Grand Island, NE, Susan Jones-Szabo and husband Gary of Berkeley, CA, Davy Jones of Antioch, TN, Griffith Jones, Christopher Jones and Sarah Jones, all of Starkville, MS; great-grandchildren, Trefor and Sabrina Szabo of Berkeley, CA; and many loving family and friends. Her husband, Grant R. Jones preceded her in death in 1980. After moving to New Mexico from Wisconsin in 1949, June worked in libraries in Clovis and Santa Fe. In Albuquerque she belonged to the Retired Officers Wives Club, bridge club and widows group. June was an associate member for 56 years of the Community of St. Mary in Wisconsin. She was a member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church. The family wishes to thank the staff of Manor Care Heights, the staff of Vista Care Hospice and the staff of Haven Care for all the care and love they gave June and support given to her family. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorial Eucharist services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 28, 2001 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd, NE with The Rev. Carole McGowan, officiating. Opperman -- Rev. Arthur Carl Opperman, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, May 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fern Wolcott-Opperman of the family home; children Donna Hoffman of Springfield, MO, Lawrence Opperman of Littleton, CO and Billie Nelson of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Terri Hoffman, Shelly Hoffman-Rosenthal, Gina Opperman-Liszweski, Nick Opperman, Eric Nelson and Jennifer Nelson; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond Opperman of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Hugh who was five years old. Rev. Arthur was born December 6, 1913, the third of six children. He served as pastor to four churches and was a homebuilder. Shea -- George J. Shea, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2001. George is preceded in death by his grandparents, Ruth and Al Shebler. He is survived by his dad, James Shebler of Rio Rancho; his mother, Debbie Petito of Rio Rancho; son, Richard Alexander Shea; daughter, Jordyn Shea both from Albuquerque; two sisters, Lynne and husband, Chris McLamb from Rio Rancho, Melissa and husband, Chris Jones from Albuquerque. Starr -- Elmer Charles Starr, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1934, died Monday, May 21, 2001. He is survived by his children, Betty and Leon Wiley, Bonnie and Cliff Everett, Judy Starr and Jeanette and Jim Brenholdt; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn; and his second wife, Josephine. As was a general contractor, he was involved in much of the early development and beautification of New Mexico roads, parks and monuments, such as Carlsbad Caverns, Los Alamos National Labs and Capulin Mt. In his later years, he was an artful competitor of Omaha at the Sandia Casino. He was especially grateful for the kind attention he received at the restaurant where he had breakfast. Thanks to all who knew him for your kind thoughts and fond memories. Stutz -- Sandra Jean Stutz, 53, a resident of Belen and formerly of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2001. She was a member of the Catholic Church and worked for the Dept. of Defense as a Contract Specialist before retiring with 20 years of dedicated service. Her aunt, Florence Borrowdale, preceded her in death in April 2001. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, John of the family home; two children, Rebecca and Brian Stutz, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; her parents, Charles and Rita Mintz, formerly of Belen and currently in Chicago, Illinois; one sister, Susan Brannon and her husband, Gordan of Chicago, Illinois. Teague -- Virginia Moon Teague, age 93 of Albuquerque, NM and former Altus, OK, resident, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 in Albuquerque. She was born July 29, 1907 in Tulsa, OK, to James Noah and Sarah Elizabeth (Bolton) Moon. She attended Pleasant Point, Altus High School, and graduated in 1925, attended Southwestern University in the summer, returned to Altus where she enrolled in and graduated from Altus Business School. She had lived in Tulsa, Altus and Albuquerque, but spent most of her life in Altus. She married P. Oxford Teague February 12, 1927 in her parents' home in Altus. He preceded her in death October, 1984. Virginia owned and operated the Stop & Shop Grocery Store in Altus. She was a member of the Hoffmantown Baptist church. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Noah and Sarah Elizabeth; her husband, Oxford, to whom she was married for 57 years; one brother, Woodrow Moon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie Moon Jackson and her husband, Cecil and Vera Moon Bickford and her husband, Joe. She is survived by one daughter, Patsy Teague Shelby and her husband, Dale, of Albuquerque, NM; one brother, Charles L. Moon of Arcuate, CA; sisters-in-law, Nova Teague Fells and Winnie Chandler Moon; three grandchildren, Terry, Wayne and Alan Shelby; and one great-grandchild, Alec Shelby. Graveside Service will be Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home, Lone Wolf, OK.
