Garretson -- O. L. Garretson, 89, passed away on March 6, 2001 in Farmington, NM. He was born on February 24, 1912 on the family farm near Salem, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Erma; a son, John and daughter, Susan Gattis both of Mission Viejo, CA and a son, Don of Mission, KS; a brother, Keith; and a sister, Doris Garretson both of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sumner and Florence White Garretson of Salem and Mt. Pleasant Iowa, brothers, Wayne and Wendell, sister, Wilma, son, Leon, grandson, Cory and two great-grandsons, Michel and Zackery. Mr. Garretson graduated from high school in Salem, Iowa in 1930 and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. He later received his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Iowa State University in 1937. Soon after graduating from college, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, OK and held many important managerial positions, one being the manager of the Special Products Division when he left the company in 1947. He moved to Roswell in 1947 and was the VP and Director of Sacra Brothers Butane and Propane, President of General Tank and Steel and served as Exec. Vice President and Director of Arrow Gas. He also held positions of President of United Farm Chemicals and President and Director of Garretson Carburation of Texas before moving to Farmington in 1960 to cofound and serve as Chairman and CEO of Plateau Refinery in Bloomfield. When Plateau was acquired by Saburban Propane, he become a Director of the National Corporation. He was also one of the founding partners and the major shareholder of the Farmington Holiday Inn and had served as Chairman and Director of the parent Corporation. Mr. Garretson belonged to a large number of professional and civic organization and had received numerous awards for his contributions to his professional field. His memberships included the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the National Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Petroleum Institute and he was President and Director of the National Petroleum Refiners Association. He also was a member of the Independent Refiners Association of America, the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the American Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Mr. Garretson was the President and Secretary of the Ancient Gassers and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity, the Tau Beta Pi Scholastic Honor Society and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was an organizing director of the Farmington National Mason he was an organizing director of the Farmington National Bank, a member and past president of the Farmington Industrial Development Commission and had been the Chairman of the New Mexico Liquid Petroleum Gas Commission for 21 years. He was a registered professional engineer in New Mexico, Iowa, Oklahoma and Missouri and was a member of the Iowa Governors Trade Commission to Europe for two years. Mr. Garretson received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association, the Merit Award from Iowa Wesleyan College Alumni Association and he also received the prestigious Professional Achievement in Engineering Award from Iowa State University. He was a long standing member of the New Mexico Amigos and had taken many trips with the Governor and business leaders from throughout the state to promote commerce for New Mexico. He had been a New Mexico resident for 57 years. Thoughout Mr. Garretson's career in the petroleum industry, he had been granted 45 patents fro projects that have enhanced operation, safety and storage related to petroleum product activities. These included a carburetor system for internal combustion engines and agriculture systems for crop fertilization and weed control. During World War II, Mr. Garretson worked on developing an aircraft engine factory test and break-in procedure, utilizing aircraft engine liquefied petroleum gas. This led to the invention of a system that allowed pilots to selectively increase the horse power of their engines during combat. Visitation will be Thursday 3:00 p.m. til 7:00 p.m. at the La Quey Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Farmington with Co-Pastors, Dr. Frank and Tura Hayes officiating. Mr. Garretson will be taken to the Beatty Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant Iowa for Services Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Salem Iowa Cemetery. Gonzales -- Celso Gonzales, 78, a lifelong resident of New Mexico went home to the Lord on March 7, 2001. He was born in Belen, New Mexico, to the late Salomon Gonzales and Maria Alfides Rael Gonzales on September 4, 1922. Celso is survived by his sister, Griselda Gonzales Toledo; aunt, Felipita (Lipa) Rael Espinosa; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his loving family. Visitation for Mr. Gonzales will be held at Garcia Mortuary on Friday, March 9, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. A Rosary will be recited at St. Edwin's Cathlolic Church at 5:00 p.m. Friday evening. Herrera -- Mrs. Lugardita Herrera (Grandma Lou), born in San Antonito, NM, died Wednesday in Albuquerque at the age of 86. She was a member of San Felipe de Neri Church. Mrs. Herrera is preceded in death by her parents, Alejandro and Rosalia Herrera, son, Cristobal Ruiz, grandson, Louis Ruiz, brothers, Tomas Herrera, Bernardo Herrera and Fermin Herrera. Knight -- Pauline Elizabeth Knight, 84, passed on Tuesday, March 6, 2001. Mrs. Knight graduated from Evart High School in 1933. She worked in Experimental Engineering at AC from 1934 to 1946. In 1937, she married Vernon Welter and had one son, Karl. Vernon was killed in World War II in 1945. A year later she married Frank Knight. In 1965 to 1972, she worked at the Flint's Journal in Flint, MI in the Classified Department. She then moved to Rio Rancho and worked as supervisor in Classifieds at the Albuquerque Journal from 1972 to 1986. Mrs. Knight was a member of Swartz Creek O.E.S, #430, and Rio Rancho Methodist Church. She is survived by her sons, Karl Welter of Apache Junction, AZ; Frank Knight III and wife, Cindy of Albuquerque, and Jim Knight and wife, Ellie of Albuquerque; five grandsons, Frank, Andy, Kyle, Chris, and Jeff; one granddaughter, Molly; two nieces, Prudy Jacoby of Davison, MI and Kathy Koch of Flint, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Knight Jr. in 1987. Services will be held Friday, March 9, 2001, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Leonard -- George Thacher Leonard, a resident of Paradise Hills for the last 18 years, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2001. He was born July 19, 1919, in Ollie, Montana to George S. and Stella Thacher Leonard. He was married to Mary Helen Robinson on July 17, 1943. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; one son, Stephen G. Leonard and wife, Gail of Prineville, OR; and one daughter, Kathryn B. Leonard of Rio Rancho, NM; four grandchildren, Mary V. Good, Michelle Bosley, Michael Leonard, Sarah Leonard; and three great-grandchildren, Alric Good, Shelbie Williams, and Peyton Leonard. George joined the Marine Corps on October 10, 1940 and served until February 22, 1946. He was employed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration from 1947 to 1957. He then went to work for the Department of the Army on the White Sands Missile Range until his retirement in 1974. He was a Past Master of La Feria Masonic Lodge #1197, La Feria, TX, a member of Sandoval Lodge #76, Ballut Abyad Shrine, ANSAR Shrine Unit and West Mesa Shrine Club. He was a Past Patron of La Feria Chapter #732 O.E.S., La Feria, TX and a member of Turquoise Chapter #71, O.E.S., Rio Rancho, NM. He was a member of Paradise Hills United Methodist Church. George was an avid fisherman and was never happier than when he was in his boat on a lake fishing. A Memorial Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Paradise Hills United Methodist Church, 4700 Paradise Blvd. with the Rev. David Snyman officiating. Lowry -- Edward C Lowry, 82, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2001. Edward was born October 17, 1918 the son of Clarence and Edith Maupin Lowry in Leeton, Missouri. He served in the US Air Force, serving during WWII, retiring in 1964 and had been an Engineer Manager with Boeing Company, retiring in 1984. Edward came to Albuquerque the first time while stationed at Kirtland AFB, and then again after retiring. He was a member of the Lions Club and he volunteered at The Storehouse. Edward was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1999 and one brother. He is survived by his son, Warren Lowry and wife, Madelyn Millholland of Anchorage, AK; two brothers, Gilbert Lowry and wife, Catherine of Shawnee, KS, and Dale Lowry and wife, Paula of Newmont, CA; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Lowry of Leeton, MO; also numerous nieces and nephews, including niece, Sally Baca, Munkres, and great-great-nephews, Isaiah and Eliz Vargas. The Service for Edward will be on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Pratt -- Edward C. Pratt, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1974, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001. He is survived by his son, John Pratt and wife, Sandy of Albuquerque; and grandchildren, Casandra Pratt of Oklahoma City, OK and Jeremiah Pratt of Albuquerque. He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis G. Pratt in 1978. Mr. Pratt retired from U.S. Army after nearly 23 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Pratt was a member of the Mason of the Scottish Rite for 43 years. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial graveside service will be held Friday, March 9, 2001. Salinas -- Duke Elias Salinas, 43, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2001. He is survived by his sons, Joshua Duke Salinas and Justin Stewart Salinas; parents, Pete G. and Maria E. Salinas; sister, Debra K. Salinas; brothers, Dan L. Salinas and wife, Karla K. and David A. Salinas and fiancé, Audra Benaitis, all of Albuquerque; nieces, Cassandra and husband, Jerome, Kristina, Diana and husband, Gary, Rachel, and Lorraine; nephews, Sean and Gregory; grandnieces, Katie and Kaylee; and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Duke was born in Albuquerque on November 7, 1957 at Kirtland AFB and graduated from Sandia High School in 1976. He attended UNM, TVI, Eastern NM University and Dale Carnegie courses. Duke primarily worked for the family business in sales, holding the position of vice president for several years. In that time he married Emily and raised two sons, Josh and Justin. His love of photography developed from a hobby into a profession where he won many awards of achievement from the New Mexico Photographers Association. He owned and operated his own photography studio specializing in architecture, weddings, glamour and studio portraits. Duke spent five years in volunteer activities, which included work as an Albuquerque Juvenile Probation officer and with the youth ministry group at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church. He was a past member of the Duke City Exchange Club and past president and member of the Board of NM Photographers Association. Recently, Duke was pursuing his real estate license, working primarily in mortgage real estate finance. A Rosary will be recited Sunday, March 11, 2001, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming NE. Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 12, 2001, 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2532 Vermont NE, Father Ronald Bruckner, Celebrant. Tillotson -- Carolyn Marsh Tillotson, 56, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on Monday, March 5, 2001. Beloved daughter of Edith and George (d.1982). Carolyn was born on November 25, 1944, in Ludington, Michigan. She was a devoted mother, teacher, musician, general contractor, seamstress, knitter and adventurer. She was a deeply spiritual person and her faith inspired others. Tolmie -- Helen Marie Tolmie, née Stonecypher, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the age of 91. She was born in York, Nebraska in 1909, and settled in Albuquerque in 1951 when her husband, John Tolmie, started his career at Sandia National Laboratories. Helen has been a long-time resident of La Vida Llena retirement community in Albuquerque, remaining there after John's death in 1989. She is survived by her son, Don Tolmie and daughter-in-law, Sandra Tolmie of Los Alamos; her daughter, Patricia Newman and son-in-law, Wallace Newman of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, John Newman, Karen Martin, James Newman, Mark Newman, Debra Huling and David Tolmie; six great-grandchildren; a niece and three nephews; and many special friends. Services will be held Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at La Vida Llena Carter Hall, 10501 Lagrima De Oro NE, with Rev. Norton Scrimshire officiating. Weinreb -- Anna Weinreb died March 7, 2001 at a local hospital. This great, courageous lady, loved and admired by many, was born in Krakow, Poland, 95 years ago. Anna survived concentration camps during World War II. From 1950 she resided in Albuquerque and was a member of the Congregation B'Nai Israel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Veston and is survived by her nephew, Sam Urbach, of Houston; her niece, Anita Obryk, of Krakow, Poland; and special friends, Zofia and Andrzej Pastuszyn. He was the first President of the Sunport Optomist Club, and a past President of the Volcano Cliff�s Property Owners Association. Mr. Wiggans owned and operated the Neal Wiggans Company.
