Eloise Basinger, 91, died in Albuquerque on Wednesday, August 16, 2000. Prior to moving to Albuquerque in 1989, Eloise resided in Wichita, KS, where she was well known for her award winning decorative arts. Eloise was born in Coats, KS on July 16, 1909. She was preceded in death by husband, Clayton Basinger in 1992; sister, Kathleen Shore; brother, Boyd Shore; and grandson, Kirby Driver. Eloise is survived by her twin daughters, Jane Driver of Albuquerque and Joan Holliway and husband, Don of Queen Valley, AZ; granddaughter, Julie Holliway Gerardi of George West, TX; grandsons, Kenton Driver of Salina, KS and David Holliway of Huntington, WVA; and three great-grandchildren. Byrd Hillside Funeral Home of Wichita will be in charge of graveside. B. Irene Berger, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Sunday, August 13, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Evangeline J. O¯Brien of Tijeras; son, John Berger and wife, Marilyn of Albuquerque; grandsons, Gene W. Boley and wife, Ann of Rio Rancho, John D. Berger, Jr. and wife, Rachelle of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Patricia Page and husband, Richard of Cedar Crest, Cheryl M. Tucker de Padilla and husband, Patrick of Tijeras, Debby Stephens and husband, Darrell of Texas; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Daniel Winslow Edwards in 1949 and John Fremont Berger in 1965; and son, Daniel W. Edwards, Jr. Mrs. Berger was born in New Hampshire. After moving to Albuquerque, she began working for Sandia Corporation where she retired in 1979 as a research and development electronics technician. After retirement, Mrs. Berger enjoyed bowling, dancing and playing bridge. More than anything she loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and interment of cremains has been held at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 27, 2000, 3:30 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating.

Madison"M.J." James Cathey, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, entered into the presence of his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on August 15, 2000. His parents, Clarence and Grace Cathey; and his brother, Winston O. Cathey, preceded him in death. His wife of 59 years, Thelma L. Cathey; his children, Sharon L. Cathey and Larry M. Cathey of Albuquerque; his sister, Nowata Jean Billon and her husband, Stephen of Las Vegas, NV; his brothers, J. Lee Cathey and his wife, Naomi of Carlsbad, NM, James Cathey of San Bernardino, CA; his sister-in-law, Nora Cathey of Albuquerque; his brother-in-law, Hubert Hutches and his wife, Anita of Pasadena, CA; and nieces and nephews survive him. He was born on November 27, 1920 in Cheek, Oklahoma. He graduated from Zaneis High School in 1938. M.J. attended Business College in Oklahoma City during 1939-40. He then moved to Springfield, CO, where he did clerical work for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). While in Springfield, he married Thelma L. Hutches, on December 7, 1940. They moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1941, where M.J. worked for Lockheed Aircraft and he then joined the U.S. Navy. He trained in San Diego, where he served as company clerk. He was then assigned to the U.S. Naval Schools and Training Command, and served as a Petty Officer in the Printing Department. The Cathey's moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and in 1951, M.J. became the manager of Case Thompson Printing Co. Later he worked as the Vice-President of Aiken Letter Shop and then started the family owned and operated LMC Printing Co. M.J. was a charter member and past president of the Albuquerque Club of Printing House Craftsmen and was instrumental in forming the original groups of craftsmen. He also served as President of the Printing Industry of NM and of the Exchange Club of Albuquerque. He served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA, New Mexico Press Assoc., Tourist Committee of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, the Literacy Center of Albuquerque, and he was active in many other civic organizations. M.J. retired in 1992, but he stayed active with horseback riding and enlightening others about NM history, ghost towns and railroads. Mrs. Julia Chavez, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Thursday in Albuquerque at the age of 86. Mrs. Chavez was a member of the San Ignacio Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose T. Chavez and Trinidad Rodriguez; sons, Arthur Robles, Arnold Robles, and John Robles; daughters, Margaret Robles, Dora Robles and Rose Herrera; and grandchildren, Evangeline and John. Mrs. Chavez is survived by her son, Henry Robles; daughter, Virginia Robles; 13 grandchildren, Eddy, Dora, Bob, Mary, Alan, Leonard, Anthony, Manuel, Sandra, Michelle, Joe, Arthur and Mike; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Chavez will be held on Saturday at the San Ignacio Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Alene Jackson, born May 10, 1921, died unexpectedly on August 3, 2000. A beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by a daughter, Samyeann Benevento and husband, Dr. Louis; and a son, Henry Jackson and wife, Cindy. She will be greatly missed by her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Wende Calvert and husband, Richard, Brooke, Lindsay, and Brent Jackson, Austin Poper and Conner Calvert. Alene was dearly loved by many treasured friends. At Alene's request, cremation has taken place. Russell Joseph Jones, age 97, born July 11, 1903, in Windsor Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice. Mr. Jones is survived by five children, Duane Jones and wife, Barbara, Derwin Jones and wife, Bonnie, Erwin Jones, Donna Zahn, Carol Brown and husband, Charles; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Paul Henry Kuhn. Our hearts were broken when Paul Henry left the building on August 2, 2000. We all knew he was too young at 50 to be moving along. He did so peacefully at his home. Paul traveled through life with the warmth of his spirit touching everyone he met. We thank God for his unique talents as a musician and songwriter that made us smile for more than 35 years. Paul's professional painting business helped keep Albuquerque beautiful. Paul lived in Albuquerque for 45 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth H. Kuhn and Werner W. Kuhn. He is survived by his sister, Elbertine Miner of Moab, UT; and a brother, Werner H. Kuhn of Albuquerque. Now, and for a long while, we're all singing the blues.

Gilbert G. Martinez, Jr. (Tats) passed away peacefully on August 16 with his family around him. Jason P. Moore, age 85, born in East Texas, January 22, 1915, passed away August 15, 2000 in Albuquerque, having been a resident here and business partner with Max Flatow since 1947 (FMSM Architects). Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Mae Bowman Moore on April 5, 1999. Walter W. Nations, 87, a native New Mexican, died Monday, August 14, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Estaline Nations; daughter, Nancy Ann Core and husband, Andrew, all of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Jane Core of Reston, VA and Susan Core of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Lucille Nations of Albuquerque and Dorothy Nations of Arrey, NM; three nieces; and one nephew. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Ada Nations; brothers, Emmett Nations and Preston Nations; and sister, Ruby Railston. Walter graduated from NMSU in 1936 with a degree in agriculture. During college he was active in sports and was the captain of 1935 Aggie Football Team, which played in the first college Sun Bowl. In 1984, he was honored by being selected the Outstanding Alumni for the School of Agriculture and Home Economics during their centennial celebration. During WWII, Walter served as Battalion Commander in the First Infantry Division and was highly decorated. After WWII, he was part of the reorganization of the NM National Guard culminating his service as the Commanding General of the 111th Artillery Brigade. Walter spent 17 years as an Agricultural Extension Agent with BIA-United Pueblo Agency. He retired from the Department of Agriculture as the State Director of Farmers Home Administration. At age 50, he entered a career in real estate and the appraisal field. He was a life member of the Albuquerque Board of Realtors, and assisted with the creation of the Farm Managers¯and Rural Appraisers Society and the New Mexico Section of the Range Management Society. He worked for Bernalillo County for four years, serving as County Manager before retiring. Walter was a charter and life member of the North Albuquerque Lion's Club. Lion Nations served as District Governor and President of the Past District Governors¯Association. He was an avid golfer, belonging to New Mexico Men's Golf Association; the Albuquerque Golf Association; and the Old Timers Association. From their inceptions, Walter was active with the Christian Student Center at UNM; and the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home. Walter was a member of Montgomery Church of Christ. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Mike Manley, Minister officiating. Arden Royce Nelson, age 67, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000, after a battle with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons, Rick L. Nelson of Houston, TX, Kerry Nelson and wife, Andrea and their son, Jonathan, Christopher Nelson and wife, Sandra and their daughter, Sara and husband, Robert Trujillo, all of Albuquerque, NM; and brother, Duane Nelson of Espanola, NM. He is also survived by his faithful dogs, Kira and Cricket, who stayed by his side through the last months of his illness. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael S. Nelson. He was born in Oakland, Nebraska. He has been a resident of Albuquerque for 44 years. He was with Goodrich Roofing Co. for over 30 years before retiring early this year. He was well-known as a roofing construction estimator and consultant. As Vice-President of Goodrich Roofing, he was a member of the National Roofing Association and the Association of General Contractors. He enjoyed Indian arts and crafts and he attended Indian Market in Santa Fe for many years, attired in favorite velvet Indian shirts and Indian jewelry. He was interested in cowboy culture, especially in boots and western hats. Laura Hilaria Pacheco, born in Lemitar, New Mexico on October 5, 1912, to Evaristo and Isabel Garcia, and a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on August 16, 2000. She is survived by one son, Tano Pacheco; one grandson, Lorenzo; two sisters, Nica Chavez and Frances Valenzuela; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence Pacheco; two sisters, Odelia Montoya and Pauline Torres; and one brother, Florentino Garcia. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, August 18, 2000, 7:30 p.m., at St. Francis Church, followed by a Mass on Saturday, August 19, 2000, at 9:00 a.m. Cremation will follow the service. Robert C. Prewitt III, 77, passed away Monday, August 15 after a brief illness."RC" was born March 9, 1923 in Gallup to Robert C. Prewitt Jr. and Cornelia (nee) Porter of Prewitt, NM. He was a graduate of the University of New Mexico and spent most of his career as an engineer for Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was a sportsman, skier and regular at the trap and skeet ranges. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia L. Webb and Mary E. Prewitt. He is survived by three children, Eilene C. Durgin and Robert C. Prewitt IV of Albuquerque and Michael S. Prewitt of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Freeman of Los Lunas; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A wake will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 19, at the home of Eilene Durgin, 4112 Southwood Ct. NW.

Suzanne L. Rosa, 79, a resident of Corrales for the past 28 years, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2000. Suzanne was born February 13, 1921, the daughter of Felix and Louise Courtade in New York City, New York. She had worked as an Administrative Assistant with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service for 30 years. Suzanne is survived by her daughter, Denise Schaller and husband, Russell of Corrales; two grandchildren, Karl Schaller of Rio Rancho and Jeremy Schaller of Phoenix, AZ; one great-grandchild, Russell Schaller Reitman of Rio Rancho. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 19, 2000, 9:00 a.m., at San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales with The Rev. Clarence Galli as the Celebrant. Joseph Ralph Salazar (a.k.a. Showboat), a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, went to be with the Lord, on August 16, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his daughter, Gina McKay and fiance, Dan Belflower; one grandaughter, Lyndzy McKay, of Albuquerque, NM; and one grandson, Troy Haley of Rio Rancho, NM; one sister, Mary-Alice Salazar of Albuquerque; three brothers, Frank O. Louis Clell Short, 83, od Edmond, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000. Short was born September 24, 1916, in Waurika, Oklahoma. He served as a pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He played professional baseball for the Los Angeles Angels in the 1930s, and later coached USAAA softball, taking his team to the World Series. He moved to Edmonton from Albuquerque in 1993. Short is survived by four children, James Short and wife, Cherie of Edmond, Thomas Short and wife, DyAnne of Los Alamos, Bill Short and wife, Linda of Roseville, CA, and Linda Cobb and husband, Larry of Albuquerque; and eight grandchildren, Kermit Short of Phoenix, David Short, Christa Short, Kerri Short, and Kevin Short of Edmond, Cameron Short and Chelsea Short of Roseville, and Sean Cobb of Albuquerque. Cremation took place at Bill Merritt Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2000, at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Private interment will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, September 1, 2000. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service, 116 Central Park Square.

Severa Silva, born on March 21, 1917, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 16, due to complications with her heart. She was surrounded by her family and left them peacefully. She was preceded in death by her parents, Felipe and Rose Luna; husband, Margarito Silva; son, Sammy Silva; grandson, Leandro Lee Pena; brother, Quadalupe Luna; daughter, Oralia Soliz. She leaves her children, Margaret Russo and husband, Frank, Adrian Silva and wife, Tina, Irene Pena and husband, Leandro, Gilbert Silva and wife, Mary Ellen, Nick Silva and Donna, Joe Dale Silva and wife, Lorriane, Jeremias Silva and wife, Teresa Lorraine, and David Silva and Teresa. Severa is also survived by her very special granddaughter, Diane Silva Moya; and her 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Gallegos of Albuquerque and Maryann Gallegos of Mountainair; brother, Joe Luna of Mountainair."Mom and Gramma" as everyone called her, was a very strong woman. After her husband passed away, she raised her ten children alone. She worked on and off throughout her life and still made time for her children. As the years went on, she became a homemaker and helped raise her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and played a very important part with her fifth generation of great-great-grandchildren. Our memories are walking into her home to the aroma of fresh tortillas because feeding her family is what always made her happy. She gave freely and welcomed all whom entered her home. God Bless You! Howard Leonard Siskin, 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1979, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Florence Siskin of Albuquerque; son, David Lane Siskin of Cape Coral, FL; brother-in-law, Hy Pitt and wife, Jeanne of Milwaukee, WI; special niece, Barbara Ginsberg and husband, Julius of Philadelphia, PA; and cousin, David Dordick and wife, Maryann of Illinois. Mr. Siskin was born in Chicago, IL. He was a WWII veteran serving in the US Navy. Geraldine A. Skala, age 75, a resident of Albuquerque, NM died on Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at home after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James Skala, in April of 1998. She is survived by her only child, Jennifer A. Noretta I. White, 85, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at Sunbridge West Mesa Healthcare Center in Albuquerque. She was born February 18, 1915 in Pontiac, Illinois to parents, Les and Nora Sutton. She was raised and lived in Springfield, IL. She married Edward M. White in 1936 and they lived in Springfield, IL until 1977. They moved to Albuquerque in 1977. she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. White; and sisters, Evelyn Sutton and Dorles Smorzewski. She is survived by one son, Les White and wife, Shirley; one sister, Leslie Jane O'Neal, all of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vesta G Whiteman, 82, died August 9, 2000 in an automobile accident near Durango, Colorado. Vesta was born July 10, 1918 at the family homestead near Dead Man-Capulin, New Mexico to George Lewis Martin and Georgia Viola Rodarmel. Two sons, Martin Whiteman, of Belen and J.D. Whiteman, of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, survive her. Preceding her in death were her husband, (Clarence Raymond Whiteman); her sister, (Marie Rister); her brother, (Curtis Martin); two sons, Sam Whiteman, and Curtis Whiteman; and a grandson. Cremation has taken place at Hood Mortuary in Durango, Colorado. A Memorial service, which will include spreading her ashes, is scheduled at Terrace Grove Cemetery, in Belen, NM, Saturday, August 19, 2000, at 11:00 a.m.

John P. Williams, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died Sunday, August 13, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Owallah ¯Billie¯ Williams; daughter, Beverly J. Wilkins, both of Albuquerque; son, John R."Bob" Williams of T or C; grandchildren, Sydney Little and husband, Frank of Albuquerque, Brian Wilkins and wife, Robyn of Phoenix, AZ, Steven Wilkins and wife, Sandra of Puyallup, WA, Amy Wilkins of Albuquerque, and Dawn Verdigan and husband, Matt of Crown Point, IN; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by one brother; and one sister. He worked for Bureau of Indian Affairs for 41 years and retired in 1977. Mr. Williams was a member of the Sandia Mountain Lodge #72 A.F. & A.M.; Order of the Eastern Star Desert Rose #70; and Ballut Abyad Shrine. Julius Anthony Yuska, 69, passed away Monday, August 14, 2000. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1972. Following a military career with the Air Force, he continued his lifelong love of being a musician, playing the piano and organ with numerous bands in Albuquerque. The Lobo football and basketball teams were a passion with Jules, and fishing was his favorite form of relaxation. Survivors include his son, Mark E. Yuska and his wife, Janelle; daughter, Julie Buckalew and her husband, Hardy; grandchildren, Allison and Lauren Yuska; and his former wife, Sylvia Yuska, the mother of his children.
