Bettinger -- Takako Bettinger, age 78 and a resident of Albuquerque for 27 years died Friday, October 22, 1999, following an illness. Mrs. Bettinger is survived by her husband, John L. Bettinger; one daughter, Mildred Griffee and her husband, James all of Albuquerque; one step-son, Brian A. Bettinger and his wife, Kathryn of CA; and a sister, Fusako Hayakawa of Japan. Mrs. Bettinger was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 25, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE with pastor, Fred Gurule of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Capels -- Michael W."Mike" Capels, age 30, passed away on October 10, 1999 in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was a resident since 1992. He loved fishing and hunting in Iowa. Mike was born in Albuquerque on October 2, 1969, was a longtime resident and attended schools in Albuquerque until he moved to Iowa. He is survived by his father, William and wife, Nancy Capels of Albuquerque; his mother, Helen and husband, Dale Strong of Tempe, AZ; his sisters, Karen and husband, Kenneth Miller of McKinney, TX, Kathryn and husband, Stewart of Sarasota, FL; his brother, Christopher and wife, Rachelle Capels of Santa Cruz, CA; his nephew, Gregory Miller; and by his niece, Kelly Miller. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 1999, 6:30 p.m., at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church (8600 Academy Rd. NE) with Pastor Larry Moss officiating. Private interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Door of Faith Mission, 1006 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50309.

Duffy -- Edward Thomas Duffy, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 23. Mr. Duffy has lived in Albuquerque since 1946. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Betty Carter Duffy. he is survived by his son, Robert T. Duffy and his wife, Dr. Jennie Ann Ozog Duffy of Houston, TX, and their children, Emily, Meredith, and Andrew, his daughter Julie Brown and her husband, Charles Brown of Albuquerque and their children, Rachel and Scott, his son, Thomas, J. Duffy and his wife, Pauline Tao of Vienna, VA, and their son, Liam, and son, Richard F. Duffy and his wife, Deborah Pernice Duffy of Cabin John, MD, and their children Hannah, Joseph, Caroline, and Margaret. He is also survived by his brother, James A. Duffy of Bridgewater, NJ, and Frank T. Duffy of Yonkers, NY, several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous cousins in the U.S. and in Ireland. Mr. Duffy was born on July 5, 1915, in New York City to Thomas Duffy of Sligo County, Ireland, and Johanna McCormack Duffy of Tipperary County, Ireland. His aunt, Julia McCormack also of Tipperary, played a very significant and loving role in his life. Mr. Duffy's family moved to Yonkers, NY, when he was a young boy. He attended Fordham Prep and Manhattan College. While at Fordham Prep he played football and was coached by a student assistant from Fordham University named Vince Lombardi. After college, he worked in Florida as a test driver, and in New York City on the planning and operation of the 1939 New York World's Fair. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as an Intelligence Officer in the South Pacific. He earned three battle stars for his service in the Pacific including the Guadalcanal and Philippines campaigns, and left the service having attained the rank of Captain. During his training prior to being stationed overseas he was briefly stations at Kirtland Base and while in New Mexico met and fell in love with his future wife, Betty Carter. After the War he worked with the post-war Manhattan Project. During that time he worked with Gen. Leslie Groves, Robert Oppenheimer, and Edward Teller. He also worked with Gen. Curtis LeMay during the development of the Strategic Air Command. Mr. Duffy served much of his career at Sandia Base as the Deputy Chief of Security and Intelligence for the Defense Atomic support Agency and the Defense Nuclear Agency. Mr. Duffy loved travel, a good meal, and playing golf and handball. He loved to read, and had an excellent understanding of world and U.S. history. But most of all, he loved his family. He and Betty were terrific parents. He was especially proud of his 10 grandchildren. He will forever be remembered by his kids and grandkids for the poem from his youth that he would recite to our amusement and delight each spring in his best New York accent (author unknown):" 'Tis spring! Duke -- Dorothy L. Duke, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1947, died Sunday, October 24, 1999. She is survived by her son, Duane A. Schiff and wife, Dee of Albuquerque; daughter, Mary Jo Dowdy and husband, Marvin of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dayton M. Schiff; second husband, Wylie Duke, Sr.; son, Dale Schiff; three sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Duke was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She also was a member of the Women's Golf League at Puerta Del Sol. Graveside services will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery and will be announced, with Pastor Luther Mathsen officiating. Pallbearers will be David Schiff, Thomas Nethery, Lynn Nethery and Marvin Dowdy. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Thomas, Mark Thomas and Dayton Schiff. Kuykendall -- Andy Kuykendall, 31, died tragically in a traffic accident on Thursday, October 21, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Joni Kuykendall of the family home; daughters, Trina McCollum, Skyla Kuykendall, both of Odessa, TX and Terra Morris of Rio Rancho; parents, Darrell and Janice Kuykendall of Farmington, NM; brothers, Robert Darrell Kuykendall and wife, Kayla of Midland, TX, Roger Wayne Kuykendall and wife, Laurie of Lubbock, TX and Jason Paul Kuykendall and wife, Stefani of Grand Prairie, TX; sister, Regina Diane Funderburk and husband, Kevin of Grand Prairie, TX; paternal grandmother, Mary Kuykendall of Hobbs, NM; and maternal grandfather, Dorse Hignight of Hobbs, NM. Leffler -- LaVerne Clark Leffler, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Saturday, October 23, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Walter, of the family home; sons, Albert, and his wife, Kathy of Phoenix, Arizona, and Douglas, and his wife, Nancy of Rio Rancho; daughters, Beverly Chavez and her husband Bill of Albuquerque, Candace, and her companion Robert Sisneros of Santa Fe; and six grandchildren, Ambre Leffler, Holly Leffler, Erin Chavez, Ryan Chavez, Kaitlyn Leffler and Glenna Leffler. Additionally, LaVerne is survived by her nephew, David Stephens, and his wife, Sharon of Colorado Springs; niece, Georgia Stephens of Shreveport; and great-niece, Jennifer Stephens of Santa Fe. She was born in Dickens, Texas, and graduated from Amarillo High School and Texas Tech University and was an active and long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. She was also a member of the Martineztown House of Neighborly Service Auxiliary in Albuquerque and Church Women Untied. LaVerne was a member of PEO Chapter AM. Memorial services will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 812 Edith NE, Albuquerque, on Wednesday, October 27, at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Tony Chavez, officiating and Reverend Jaime Quinones, assisting. Moctezuma -- Eleanor A. Moctezuma, 63, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past four years, and a lifetime resident of New Mexico. Eleanor was born August 1, 1936 the daughter of Manuel G. and Candelaria Gabeldon Flores in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph"Jo Jo" Marquez. Eleanor is survived by her four children, Steve Marquez and wife, Virgie of Albuquerque, Lorraine Mascarenaz and husband, Dennis of Rio Rancho, Ileen Geshel and husband, Dennis of Rio Rancho and Kenneth Marquez of Rio Rancho; grandchildren, Ricky and Maranda, Benji and Janice, Toni and Mark, Jenifer, Dennis, Kassandra, and Anna; great-grandchildren, Lori, Tiffinni, Jacquelina, and Joseph. Norris -- Barbara Ann Norris died at home October 21, 1999. Patterson -- Mary G. Patterson, 65, a resident of Albuquerque since 1969, died Friday, October 22, 1999. Scott -- Lorita"Rita" E. Scott, 57, a resident of Albuquerque since 1978, died Wednesday, October 20, 1999, after a courageous battle against breast cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, William Scott, Jr. of the family home; daughter, Andrea Scott of Phoenix, AZ; sons, Marc Scott and wife, Brigette of Nashville, TN and Michael Scott and wife, Rachel of Rio Rancho; three granddaughters who were the light of her life, Jordan, Jazzmine and Madison; parents, Albert and Conseulo Curley of Junction City, KS; brother, Albert Curley, II of Reston, VA; very loving friend (sister), Laura Henderson-Long of Albuquerque, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts and friends. Rita was a member of Phillips Chapel. She was a registered nurse for 36 years, and for 20 of those years she was employed at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque. Rita was the Nurse Manager of the Intensive Care Unit at Lovelace for many years before taking a position with the Center for Disease Control Vietnam Veterans' (Agent Orange) Study, during which time she touched the lives of thousands of Vietnam veterans. Rita also worked at Lovelace Scientific Resources and was the Director of Member Services for the Lovelace Health Plan. While at Lovelace, she established the Lovelace Nurse Hotline, one of the first nurse advice phone services in New Mexico. In the last year, Rita was a consultant to the Presbyterian Health Plan in the area of member services. She was active in numerous community programs and professional organizations. Services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 608 Avenida Ceasar Chavez SE, with pastor William Dorn, Jr. officiating. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Smith -- Paul R. Smith, 89, an Albuquerque resident since 1960, died Wednesday, October 20, 1999. Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Paul G. Smith and wife, Jane; granddaughter, Deborah Hernandez; grandson, Eric Arnce; great-granddaughter, Celine Nicole-Irene Hernandez, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Blake, his wife, E. Irene Smith, and his cat Baby. Mr. Smith was a graduate of the University of Indiana. He retired from the US Atomic Energy Commission at Kirtland AFB as a safety systems specialist. he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he was active with the Jolly Elders, served as an usher, and was superintendent of Sunday Schools. Vanderhoof -- Gladys Doreen"Deane" Vanderhoof, a youthful 77, unexpectedly passed away quietly at home, Monday afternoon, October 17, 1999. Deane, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, was preceded in death by her beloved husband, P.W."Vance" Vanderhoof. She was the loving mother of sons, Gary and Dallas Vanderhoof, both of Albuquerque; devoted grandmother of Brian Vanderhoof of Las Vegas, NV, Erin and Heather Vanderhoof, both of Albuquerque. Also surviving are her sisters, Constance"Connie" Clifford of El Paso, TX and Geraldine"Gerry" Carrier of Oceanside, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Deane, an avid artist, loved to read, travel and spend time with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and those who knew and loved her. Woken -- DuWayne L. Woken, age 77, passed away Friday at a local hospital. He is survived by his wife Viola Woken of Albuquerque; daughters Lorrie Woken of Colorado Springs, CO, Joan Tejada of Albuquerque and Deanna Maher of San Diego, CA; two sisters, Kathryne Peterson and Beverly Woken both of Minnesota; five brothers, Robert Woken of Canada, Miles Woken of California, Eldon and Leroy Woken of Minnesota, and Jack Woken of Kansas. DuWayne is also survived by three step-children, Joseph Holloway and wife, Amy Wyman, Rob Holloway, and Angelique Carr and husband, Rick Carr; six grandchildren, Chad Tajada, Kyle Holloway, Austin Ginn, Brittany Woken Weidlich, Adam Woken Weidlich and Caleb Holloway, and numerous nieces and nephews. he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Woken; siblings, Peter Wolken and Willard Wolkin. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, and belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a Navy pilot from 1942-1946. DuWayne's hobbies were traveling and gardening. Visitation will be Monday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne's Palm Chapel, with Funeral Service Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. Randy Walquist officiating.
