Arias -- Michael Joseph Arias, born December 20, 1993 began his new life with Jesus, October 6, 1999. Michael fought a two and a half years battle with cancer but his beautiful heart and loving soul remained an inspiration for all who knew him. The family thanks all the people in Albuquerque who kept Michael in their prayers, that is what gave Michael and his family the strength to see beyond death. Michael was born in Chandler, Arizona to Joseph and Carla Arias. Michael is survived by his parents; brother, Stephen; and sister, Gabrille; his paternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Louise Arias of Somerville, Texas; maternal grandparents, Lynette Stegdman of Dallas, Texas, Richard and Rachael Stegdman of Virginia; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services are pending. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Michael's name to the Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles, CA or the Phoenix Cancer Society.

Castaneda -- Helen Castaneda, age 60, of Tijeras, died Friday, September 24, in a local hospital. Rosary was said Monday, September 27, 7:00 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ft. Davis, Texas. Mass was Tuesday, September 28, 10:00 a.m., with burial following in St. Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Geeslin Funeral Home. Mrs. Castaneda was born March 18, 1939 to Mr. and Mrs. Eloy Jimenez in Ft. Davis. She had been a resident of Tijeras for many years. Survivors include her spouse, Carlos Castaneda of Tijeras; two sons, Carlos Castaneda Jr. and Eloy Castaneda of Tijeras; and one daughter, Lucy Castaneda, also of Tijeras. The Castaneda family would like to thank Frank Barreras for taking Father John Carney and Julian Garcia to Fort Davis, TX--Father John gave the Rosary on Monday, September 27, 1999; Mass and Burial services were on Tuesday, September 28, 1999; also thanks to those who came from far and near, those who called, and gave cards. Chavez -- Adelina Chavez, 88, a resident of Albuquerque for 57 years, died Thursday, October 7, 1999. Dempsey -- John Paul Dempsey, age 76, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in New York City on January 16, 1923. His parents were William Austin Dempsey Sr. and Elizabeth Mary Malone-Dempsey. He graduated from Hollywood High School in 1939, and the University of California Los Angeles with a Bachelors of Arts in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from June 1942 to May 1954 in the European Theater. Based in England, he completed 35 B-17 missions over Nazi occupied Europe as the Lead navigator of the 8th Air Force Bombardment Group. He married Margaret Mary Tatman in Kansas City Missouri in June 1949. They lived in Los Angeles, Hollywood and North Hollywood California, before settling in Thousand Oaks California where they resided for 29 years. They had three children, Michael, Mary and Sean Dempsey. John worked for various California aeroscope companies as a production and scheduling engineer for 40 years, including Stainless Steel Products, Lockheed, and most recently Rocket Dyne where he worked on the Space Shuttle Main Engines. He retired in 1988. John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in August 1990; his son, Sean in June 1992; and his brother, William Austin Dempsey III in September 1991. John moved to Albuquerque in June of 1996 to be closer to his son; daughter-in-law; grandchildren and sister-in-law. John is survived by his daughter, Mary Dempsey of Thousand Oaks, California; his son, Michael Dempsey; daughter-in-law, Sharla Dempsey; his grandchildren, Erin and Ian Dempsey of Los Alamos New Mexico; his sister-in-law, Eva"Taffy" Gibney of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his sister, Pat Burton and her husband, Capt. Herbert Burton of New Bern, North Carolina; his sister, Winifred Dempsey of Torrance California; his best friends of 63 years, Herman and Polly Alevy of Lakewood, California; and many other close relatives and friends. All his life John was a proponent of equal rights for all people, he was a member of the NAACP, and an avid reader. He greatly enjoyed visiting with his large family, and spent most of his vacations taking his vacations taking his wife and children to see their relatives all across the United States. Visitations will be tomorrow from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Alamdea Mortuary. A rosary will be recited tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. also at the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary. Funeral Services will be Monday morning October 11, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary. Gonzales -- Matilda Cordova Gonzales, age 92, passed away on Friday, October 8, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel M. Gonzales and daughter, Toni Montano. She is survived by three daughters, Anna Linthicum of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nester Castillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Patricia Burlingame of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three sons, Edward C. Gonzales and wife, Betty L. of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Desi Gonzales of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Julian Gonzales of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was a life long resident of New Mexico, and a member of San Felipe Church. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave SE on Sunday, October 10, 1999. Olbert -- Muriel Everett Olbert "Our Ruie", 91, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 199. She is survived by her daughter, Louise Bland and husband, Raymond of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kathryn Shull, Jim Shull and wife, Christen, all of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Lauren and Austin; brother, Mark Everett; sisters-in-law, Serena, Eileen and Lucille; many nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard in 1958; parents, Claude and Lillie Everett; twin sister, Perle; sisters, Edna and Doris; brothers, Estel, Walter, Roy and Clarence. Muriel was born in Mancos, CO on January 2, 1908, to Claude and Lillie Everett, a pioneer cattle ranching family. She graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in education. Mrs. Olbert taught at Mrs. Trudell's Private School, in the Huning Castle, and tutored many students in her home. She retired from the City of Albuquerque, and also retired from Dillards Department Store at the age of 81. Muriel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for over 50 years. She was a former member of the Order of The Eastern Star and a member of Lew Wallace Chapter D.A.R. She was loved by all who knew her. She generously gave of her self to her family and friends. She was so lovingly cared for by everyone, especially by Nancy McAllister at her home and Helen and Rhonda at Vista del Rio Assisted Living Community Services will be held Monday, 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Rd. NE, with Rev. Larry A. Wright and Rev. Melinda Wagner officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Sadilek -- Marcella Irene Sadilek, 79, a resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Julius of the family home; daughter, Julie S. Moore and husband, Richard (Dick) of Pittsford, NY; son, Julius B. (Jay) Sadilek Jr. and wife, Maureen of Renton, WA; grandchildren, Andrea M. Collins and husband, Eric of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, Richard L. Moore Jr. and wife, Stacy of Harper Woods, MI, Alisa M. Sadilek of Renton, WA; great-grandchild, Charles P. Collins of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Mrs. Sadilek was born on January 15, 1920 in New Orleans, LA, to Charles and Marcella Schwalb. She attended schools in New Orleans. After graduating from Soule Business College, she worked for Paramount Pictures in New Orleans. She met her husband, Julies, in Biloxi, MS, on Labor Day weekend in 1939. They were married in a military wedding on February 8, 1941 in New Orleans. After World War II, she accompanied her husband on his various tours of duty throughout the world, including Europe and the Far East. After her husband's retirement from the miliary, she worked at the College of Education at UNM for many years and retired in 1979. She was a member of the Alta-Mera Pagentry of the Yucca Temple No. 74 Daughters of the Nile. She was active for many years in the Officer's Wives Club and was a lifelong member of the Sts. John Chapter #35 of the Order of the Eastern Star in New Orleans, LA. She was also a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. Services will be held Monday, October 11, 1999, 11:00 a.m., at Ballut Abayd Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni Rd. SE, with Reverend John Russell officiating. Interment will take place Tuesday, October 12, 1999, 12:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Savage -- Vivian Adele Savage, 89, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died October 4, 1999, at Clare Bridge Cottage in Richland Hills, TX. She was born April 1, 1910, in Grand Junction, CO, to Vance Maynard Pugh and Minnie Mae Gardner. She attended school in Rifle, CO and graduated from Rifle Union High School. While in high school, she frequently had lead singing roles in operettas and other musical programs. On November 25, 1937, she married James William Savage, Sr. in Denver, CO. They lived in Denver, CO and Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM. Because of poor health, she moved to Texas in August 1999 to be near hear son. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church where for many years she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed needle work, working in her rose garden and watching the hummingbirds in her yard, but her greatest joy in life was her family. Survivors include one son, James William Savage, Jr. and wife, Debbi of Bedford, TX; three daughters, Joan Lee and husband, Joe of Idaho Falls, ID, Linda Szalay and husband, Jerry of El Rancho, NM and Donna McClure and husband, Paul of Nye, MT; eight grandchildren, Cameron Lee, Brady Lee, Diane Ehlert, Kimberly Coleman, Amanda McClure, Dillon McClure, Autumn Savage and Chelsea Savage; and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Ehlert, Madison, Marissa and Miranda Lee and Joey and Cassandra Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three brothers. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, 1999, 2:00 p.m., at Chester T. Sosa -- Maria Vanentina Maes Sosa, was born December 10, 1916 in Mora, New Mexico. She passed away on October 7, 1999 in Albuquerque. Mrs. Sosa was pre-deceased by her husband, Alfonso and a son, Alfonso. Mrs. Sosa is survived by five sons, Luis, Thomas, Henry, John, and Ernesto; and four daughters, Roberta Tixier, Alpha Quill, Theresa Sosa-Burkett and Rebecca Lopez. Also surviving are two sisters, Anita Martinez and Juanita Chavez. Mrs. Sosa was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Martineztown. She is survived by 29 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., October 11 at the church. The family has requested that contributions be made in her memory to the Second Presbyterian Church in Martineztown. Head pallbearer is son and constant companion, Henry Sosa. Other pallbearers are her grandsons, Rolando Luis Sosa, Alfonso Picasso Sosa, Tom Sosa, Jr., John Phillip Sosa Jr., Enrique Luis Sosa, Jose Cosme Gutierrez, III, William Sanchez, and Gregory Gonzales.

Suggs -- Marie B. Suggs, a resident of Rio Rancho and formerly of Santa Fe, New Mexico, went to be with Our Lord on September 30, 1999. Marie was born in O'Brien, Florida, on September 3, 1918, to James Lawton and Jessie Mae Barnett. After a 30-year career with the United States government at Point Mugu, California, during which time she raised three sons, Marie retired to Santa Fe, where she was at times a volunteer for the Santa Fe Public Library, the State of New Mexico Literacy Coalition, and a substitute teacher with the Santa Fe Public Schools, and later the Rio Rancho Public Schools. Marie also volunteered with her church to visit inmates at the New Mexico State Penitentiary. Marie was an independent and courageous lady. She had an unwavering faith in Jesus and always found the bright light in even the most hopeless situation. We will miss her very much. Marie is survived by her children, Leon and wife, Jean of Pioneer, CA; Francis and wife, Bonnie of Albuquerque; Shannon and wife, Lisa of Espanola. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved very much; and siblings, Ovid Barnett of Marco Island, FL, Leon Barnett of O'Brien FL, Marguerite Linch of High Springs, FL, Harry E. Barnett and wife, Wanda of Loxahatchee, FL, and Maxine Horne and husband, H.J. of Jacksonville, FL; and many cousins and friends. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 10th, at the Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, 1652 Abrazo NE, at 2:00 p.m.

Velasquez -- Fidelia Velasquez, 85, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, October 7, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Burrud; son, David Velasquez and wife, Merry Jo; granddaughter, Kathryn Marie Burrud; sister, Lydia Santillanez; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Velasquez. Fidelia was a native and lifelong resident of New Mexico. She was born on February 21, 1914 in Quemado and moved to Albuquerque as a young woman. Here Fidelia graduated from the University of New Mexico, married and raised her family. She taught in the Albuquerque Public School system for 34 years. Following an accomplished career as an elementary school teacher and after her much anticipated retirement, Fidelia finally had time to devote to the things she loved. She tatted beautifully, took delight in cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, gardening and all manner of arts and crafts. She was a lifelong Lobo fan. Fidelia will be remembered for her kindness, strong Catholic faith, creativity and especially the love she had for her family. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at The Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Father Paul Baca, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Wichelns -- Jean Frisbie Decker Wichelns, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1982, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999. She is survived by her son, Miles Wichelns and his wife, Phyllis of Sacramento, CA; granddaughter, Miranda Wichelns of Sacramento, CA; step-son, John K. Wichelns of Albuquerque; and six grandchildren by her step-sons, including Jan Cross and Ken Wichelns of the Albuquerque area. Mrs. Wichelns was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, in 1972, and her step-son, Lee Jr., in 1998. She received her B.A. as a Pratt Scholar from Adelphi University in 1932. She was a French government fellow at the University of Grenoble, France in 1933. She earned her M.A. from Yale University in 1943 and an M.S. from the University of Bridgeport in 1953. Mrs. Wichelns spent many years as a teacher and a guidance counselor before retiring in 1976. She was a recipient of the Croix de Lorraine, Maquis de Grenoble. Mrs. Wichelns was active in many organizations, including the National Society of Colonial Dames, and the National Society of Magna Charta Dames. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 9,1999, 10:30 a.m., at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 9315 Candelaria Rd. NE, with the Reverend Jan Butin officiating. Private interment will take place at Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
