Ake -- Beatrice (Bee) Ake passed away Monday, August 2, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Village in Socorro at the age of 82. She was born January 5, 1917 to Harry and Harriett Williams in St. Louis, MO. Bee and her husband, Rocky moved to Socorro from Las Cruces in 1949 where they operated the Ake Motel for 22 years. Bee was an active member of San Miguel Catholic Church, the Socorro Women's Golf and Socorro Tennis Association, and a volunteer for Good Samaritan Village. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe; and two brothers, Harry and Frank Williams. She is survived by her two children, Allen Ake and his wife, Linda of Colorado Springs, CO and Annette Buchanan and husband, Rex of Las Cruces; granddaughter, Sandra Aguilar and husband, Richard; great-grandchildren, Tyson and Kaylee Aguilar of Overland Park, KS; brothers, Duncan Williams of Albuquerque, Jack Williams of El Paso, TX and Robert Williams of Las Cruces. A Rosary in her memory will be recited at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 7, with a Memorial service following at 10:30 a.m. at the Steadman-Hall Funeral Home Chapel, 309 Garfield St., Socorro, NM. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Ake, Teresa Barron, Rex Buchanan, Barry, Duncan, Jack and Robert Williams. Ashby -- Marian E. Ashby, 92, a former resident of Albuquerque from 1961 until 1972, died in Sacramento, California, Friday, July 30, 1999. She is survived by her son, Tony Ashby and wife, Linda Jewett of Sacramento, CA; daughter, Kathryn Ann Ashby of Anchorage, AK; ten grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harve I. Ashby in 1971; and daughter, Marilyn Ruth Ashby in 1994. After her husband's death, Mrs. Ashby moved to Denver, CO in 1972. She later moved to Sedona, AZ in 1989 and then to Sacramento, CA in 1994. She attended the Christian Science Church. Baldwin -- Louis V."Lou" Baldwin Jr., 70, an Albuquerque resident since 1978, died Monday, August 2, 1999. He is survived by a son, Gary Baldwin and wife, Renee of Chandler, AZ; daughters, Linda A. McDonald of Phoenix, AZ, Suzie Taylor of Glendale, AZ, Jeanie Melton and husband, Garry of Mesa, AZ, and Debbie Merkel and husband, Dan of Reno, NV; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Clarence E. Baldwin and John D. Baldwin and wife, Nancy, all of Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Adeline Edwards of Phoenix, AZ and Marizona Robinson of Brentwood, TN. Mr. Baldwin was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Marzelle Baldwin; a daughter, Pamela Lou Baldwin; sister, Margaret Ferto; and a brother, William R. Baldwin. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Navy. Beck -- Clarence Dempsey Beck, 70, a resident of New Mexico since 1945, died Monday, August 2, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Florence Beck of Sandia Park, NM; sister, Cherie Henson of Albuquerque; nephews, Eric Deshler of Oakdale, CA and Adam Deshler of Albuquerque; and grandchildren, Tara Sweeney, Cherie Sweeney, and Erin Sweeney, all of Woodbridge, VA. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Heidi Beck in 1987. Mr. Beck taught at N.M.M.I. and T.V.I. in New Mexico, and Western State College in Gunnison, CO. He was a Civil War buff and spoke German fluently. Mr. Beck was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He was a member of the New Mexichords for many years. Bienko -- Stanley J. Bienko, 83, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 17 years, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 1999. Stanley was born September 26, 1915, the son of Jan and Antonia Dragan Bienko in Rochester, Vermont. Stanley had been with the Michigan State Liquor Commission, working in their stores for over 20 years before retiring. He was Past Commander and Chapter Commander for the Department of Purple Heart for the State of New Mexico, Stanley established the Department of Purple Heart for New Mexico, he was a member and officer of the Disabled American Veterans #5, the American Legion #121, and the V.F.W. Post 5890, he was a Past Golden Rodent of the National Order of Trench Rats, Dugout #555, he was also a Fourth Degree Knight, Teatum Club Knights of Columbus, and a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, Falcon Squadron. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, Sophie, in March of 1999. He is survived by his sister, Angeline Galwas of Rio Rancho; nieces, Theresa Budge, Bernadette Konpka, Maxine Morris, Sheryl Kennedy; nephews, Thomas Bienko, Max Bienko, and Anthony Wojtowicz, all from Michigan. The visitation will be today, Tuesday, August 3, 1999, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 5:00 p.m. followed by the American Legion service and the V.F.W. service. These will be held in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 4, 1999, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Buvens -- Richard H. Buvens, 68, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, July 31, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Ginny Buvens; daughters, Lori Walker, Sheri Buvens, Cindi Buvens and her partner, Keith and Suzi Gruen and her husband, Mark; six grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Ella, Janet, Martha, Claudia and Pat. Mr. Buvens retired in 1991 after a career in Facilities Engineering. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family. Dickason -- Don L. Dickason, 92, a resident of Albuquerque since the early 1930's after moving her from the Oklahoma Territory, died Monday, August 2, 1999. He is survived by his nephew, William D. Collier and wife, Betty of Albuquerque; niece, Betty Higgins Gentry and husband, Paul of Albuquerque; great-nephew, William L. Collier; great-nieces, Candace Collier, Dawn Campbell, Linda Higgins, Alice Ann Wylie, and Lori Sturgess; and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Dickason was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, in 1992. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Rio Grande Chapter, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #461. Mr. Dickason began practicing law in New Mexico in 1932. In 1934, he became partner in Rodey, Dickason Law Firm, before retiring in 1971. Mr. Dickason served with the New Mexico State Senate for 12 years, from 1936 to 1948, and he was Majority Floor Leader for six of those 12 years. Dodd -- John B. Dodd passed away early Sunday morning, August 1, 1999. He was born in Hartford, Arkansas, October 17, 1906. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1930. He was a World War II veteran. Mr. Dodd is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lupe Dodd; eight children, three sons, Alan Dodd and wife, Pat, John Dodd Jr. and wife, Patty and Jerry Dodd; five daughters, Terry Duran and husband, Leo, Dolores Sloan and husband, Jess, Evelyn Truman and husband, Walker, Carol Worthing and husband, Bob, Ginger Beattie and husband, Red; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frankenfeld -- 1924-1999 Mary Frankenfeld, 74, passed away on July 30, 1999 in the comfort of her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born in Enid, Oklahoma on January 4, 1924. She was married to Philip Frankenfeld on January 10, 1942. They moved to New Mexico in 1949. She is survived by Philip, her lifelong companion of 57 years; two children, Mary Beth Frankenfeld of Albuquerque, and Kenneth R. Frankenfeld and daughter-in-law, Sarah of Austin, TX; five grandchildren, Chad Hill of Tampa, FL, Kenya Hill of Albuquerque, and Kevin, Kyle and Caroline Frankenfeld of Austin, TX; two brothers, Charles Hopwood and wife, Pat of Coral Springs, FL, Donald Hopwood of Bridgeport, WV; and sister, Anice Sutherland of Fairfax, VA. Mary pursued a professional career outside of her home for most of her adult life, with many years employed with Hunter Lumber Company as their office manager. She retired in 1984. She was a member of St. Bernadette's Parish for many years, and was most recently active in the Cancer Prayer Service. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to everyone at Presbyterian Hospice for the loving care they provided over the last few months. Horchheimer -- Shirley Ann Horchheimer, age 45, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 1999. Shirley was born on September 28, 1953, in Albuquerque. She graduated from Valley High School in 1971 and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and her Master of Arts degree in Psychology and Personnel Services in 1976 from ENMU. Shirley spent the majority of her career working as an adjudicator and as an Adjudicator Specialist for the New Mexico Disability Determination Services. She was a previous member of the First Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church. Shirley had a gentle spirit with an incredible sense of humor and a deep love for animals, her friends and her family. She was an excellent cook and was the first person to provide food, transportation and help whenever one of her friends or family members was hurt or in trouble. Shirley was also an avid sports fan and supported the Dallas Cowboys and the Lobos. She spent a great deal of time helping abused and/or abandoned animals. Because of her, many dogs and cats are in safe and loving homes. Shirley's death has created an incredible void in the lives of the family and friends who loved her so deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Lawrence J. Horchheimer, in September, 1987. Shirley is survived by her mother, Dorothy A. Horchheimer; a brother, Steve W. Horchheimer and his fiancee, Angela Webb; sister, Beverly H. Wyche; her cherished doggies and kitty, Bailey, Maggie, Huero, Jody and Jett; and her many special friends. Kirkpatrick -- R. Steve Kirkpatrick, age 47, of Santa Fe, died on Sunday, August 1, 1999. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rosemary (Schneider) Neel and Hervey Schneider, and George and Bernice Kirkpatrick; and father-in-law, Frank Zippel. Steve was born on April 25, 1952 in Alamosa, CO to Robert E. and Alice Ann Kirkpatrick. He married his wife, Virginia on August 25, 1973. He was retired from the State of New Mexico as a Data Processing Manager with the Highway Department. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and a past Exalted Ruler of Santa Fe BPOE #460. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 26 years, Virginia of Santa Fe; his beloved sons, R. Daniel Kirkpatrick and girlfriend, Duska Roberts and James Kirkpatrick, all of Santa Fe; his parents, Robert and Alice Ann Kirkpatrick. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mable Zippel of Santa Fe; sister, Eileen Gilbert and husband, Wayne of Las Cruces; brother, Mark E. Kirkpatrick of Las Cruces; brother-in-law, Frank Zippel of Santa Fe; sister-in-law, Judy Hipskind and husband, Greg and family of Austin, TX; and many other aunts, uncles, relatives and friends. Levine -- Irving Levine, 84, died Sunday, August 1, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Peg Gerard; three children, Matthew, Michael, and Elena Levine; two step-children, Sheila Mints and David McHaffey; and four grandchildren, Daniel Mints, Jack,Gem and Roxanne McHaffey. Born in New York City in 1914, he became an architect, landscape architect, and professor at Pratt Institute. During WWII he drove a truck over the Burma road and edited two army newspapers. He felt his greatest accomplishment was the three books of poetry he wrote and published called Of Continuum, Vol. I, II, III. Upon retirement he moved with his wife to Albuquerque and devoted his time to exploring the Southwest, refining old manuscripts for publication, taking classes at Bear Canyon Senior Center and playing the folk fiddle. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 3, in New York City. There will be a Celebration of his Life in Albuquerque as soon as arrangements have been made. Locker -- Corinne Locker was born July 21, 1924 in New York and died July 25 in Corrales, NM. She moved to Santa Fe in the late 40's, where she worked for many years with Oliver La Farge. Upon his death, she became the Southwest representative of the American Association of Indian Affairs. Convinced that Taos Pueblo could succeed in its efforts to recover ownership of its sacred Blue Lake, she left the Association to work as a consultant for the Pueblo. In that role she was instrumental in winning the return of the Blue Lake area to the Pueblo in 1970. (Her papers relating to the Blue Lake struggle are archived at Princeton University Library.) She also worked for Presbyterian Medical Services when they sought to extend medical care into the Four Corners checkerboard area. She could recall visiting some clinic sites by light aircraft, landing on nearby roads, where there were no airstrips. More recently, she was engaged in water rights litigation on behalf of some of the northern pueblos. At her request, there will be no memorial service. Oster -- Robert L. Oster, 79, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, August 1, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ridenbaugh-Oster; brother, Cornelius Oster and wife, Nancy of Rushville, IN; sister, Connie Bateman; and nephew, William Bateman, both of Papillion, NE. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Damstra Oster in 1984. Mr. Oster was born on August 9, 1919 in Rushville, IN. He married Ruth Ridenbaugh in 1986. Mr. Oster enlisted in the U.S. Air Force a few days after the invasion of Pearl Harbor. He was stationed in Albuquerque from 1942 to 1946. He worked for Creamland Dairies from 1946 to 1984. Ridings -- Fern Elizabeth Ridings, a resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, and formerly of Portales, NM and Socorro, NM, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 1999. She was born September 11, 1906 in Aurora, Missouri, the oldest of five children born to Earl Jefferson Stratton and Laura Elizabeth Watson. Fern was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Paul Perry Ridings. She is survived by one brother, Porter Andrew Stratton and wife, Mary of Edenburg, TX; two daughters, Maebeth Guyton and husband, Robert of Grand Junction, CO and Pauline Moore and husband, Carl Moore Jr. of Socorro; six grandchildren, Michelle Guyton, Camille Jestrovich and husband, Mateja, Kevin Guyton, Paul Moore and wife, Brenda, Karla Moore, and Michael Moore and wife, Susanna; and 14 great-grandchildren, Casey, Angelica, and D.J. Jestrovich, McKenzie and Chas Guyton, Katrina and Jacqueline Smith, Jaime, Katelyn and Joshua Moore, and Daniel, Jonathan, Sarah and Matthew Moore. Fern's family homesteaded in 1909 to the Richland area of Eastern New Mexico. Her father was a miner and traveled throughout the west finding jobs wherever he could, while Fern's mother taught in a one-room school house, as well as managing a farm and rearing the family. Fern was responsible for taking care of the little ones, and many farm chores, including going for the cows. Her younger siblings always had so much praise for her. Fern and Paul moved from Portales to Socorro in 1957. She loved flowers and spent many happy hours in her enchanting garden. She served all offices of Socorro Garden Club. She also served on the District IV level of garden clubs. She served four years as Judges State Chairman and was a National Accredited Flower Show Judge with Life Standing. She was also a member of Chapter M PEO in Socorro, serving all offices and demitted to Chapter GR in Grand Junction. Fern was loved by everyone who knew her, especially the children who visited her garden, and she was delighted when classes came by for a tour of her yard, and always had time to stop what she was doing to have a soda and conversation with them. They always went home with an arm load of flowers. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Romero -- Pete A. Romero, 70, of Albuquerque, died Monday, August 2, 1999 at St. Joseph Hospital following an illness. Mr. Romero was born November 18, 1928 in San Ignacio, NM to the home of Pablo Romero and the former Eloisa Fajardo. He was reared and attended schools at San Ignacio and Santa Rosa. He married Maria M. Ulibarri on January 2, 1957 in Santa Rosa. Pete served with the U.S. Army for two years before enlisting with the U.S. Marines where he served an additional 20 years. He was honorably discharged and retired in 1972. Following his retirement, he made his home in Albuquerque where he worked for several years at Hot Suns Service Station, he later worked for David Otero, a painting contractor, and also worked for Orona Real Estate Agency. He was a member of American Legion Post #99 in Albuquerque and a longtime member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church. Pete enjoyed boxing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Nathan Romero, on August 29, 1993; a brother, Santiago Romero; along with an infant brother and sister. Survivors include his wife, Maria M. Romero of Albuquerque; two sons, Gilbert Ulibarri and wife, Shirley, Phillip Romero and fiancee, Lupe Lucero; four daughters, Rose Mary and husband, John Flores, Linda and husband, Michael Gutierrez, all of Albuquerque, Sylvia Romero and Phillip of Los Lunas, and Eva Romero of Clewiston, FL. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Reyna, Francesca, Kurt, Kelly, Ryna, and Candace; three great-grandchildren, Paul, Lorenzo, and Camille. Other survivors are two sisters, Toni and husband, Florentino Padilla of Albuquerque, Lydia and husband, Wilfred Chavez; a brother, Johnny Romero and wife, Fern; and a sister-in-law, Frances Romero, all of Santa Rosa."In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing when you look at the sky at night." Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 3, from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Santa Rosa. A second Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, August 4, from St. Rose of Lima Parish in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 1999, from the church with Father Sotero A. Sena, Celebrant of the Mass. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Darryl Padilla, Ricky Chavez, Michael Romero, Louie Romero, Tony Ulibarri, Steve Bonney, Kurt Flores, and Patrick Urban. Honorary pallbearers will include Danny Bonney and Robert Bonney. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Chavez Funeral Home, 923 S. Thomsen -- Kurt E. Thomsen, 42, a resident of Albuquerque for two years, died Saturday, July 31, 1999. He is survived by his father, Charles Thomsen of Albuquerque; sisters, Jean Thomsen-Youel and husband, Roger of Arizona, LuAnn Gatson and husband, Lawrence and Diana Roy, all of Nebraska; and nephews, Masada and Ivan Roy. He is also survived by his aunt, Janet Waddill and her daughters, Cindy Richardson and Julle Alcorn; his uncle, Paul J. Thomsen and wife, Waltraud (Wally) and their daughter, Paula Sue and his aunt, Phyllis Larsen and husband, Paul and their children, Jeff, Janice and Pamela. Kurt was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Thomsen in 1994. He loved singing and was a part of the San Francisco Men's Chorus, touring with them in the early 80's. Cremation has taken place and a reception will be held Saturday, August 7, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Torres -- Alvarado Salazar (A.S.) Torres, resident of Belen, was born on January 18, 1911, to Juan and Maria Salazar and passed away on August 1, 1999. Mr. Torres was predeceased by Helen, his wife of 53 years, in 1990; and by his daughter, Carmen, in 1964. Mr. Torres is survived by his daughters, Bessie Aragon of Albuquerque, Frances Perotti of Belen, Lorraine Garcia of Belen, and Mary Ellen Pruess of Lakewood, CO; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his sister, Rose Moya of Los Lunas; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Torres was a member of the Tome Land Grant, New Mexico Locksmith Assoc., Knights of Columbus, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Belen Catholic Church. He retired from Sandia National Labs after 21 years of service. He then owned and operated Torres Key Shop for 25 years while maintaining a Spanish/English translation service. He wrote two books on Spanish elementary education. Cremation has already taken place and Mass will be celebrated at the Belen Catholic Church on August 5, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
