Borthwick -- Dr. Norman M. Borthwick 6/12/18 - 3/3/99"He was one man in a million"Norman was a community-spirited person from grade school, where he played the bugle for the raising and lowering of the flag. In college, he belonged to the R.O.T.C. horse-drawn mounted artillery. While attending C.S.U. Veterinary School in Ft. Collins, Colorado, he joined Alpha Tau Omega, remaining a member for 62 years. After graduation, Norman moved to Albuquerque for a few years, then opened veterinary clinics in Artesia and Roswell. During these years, he was twice State President of the New Mexico Veterinarian Association. His memberships also included the Elks in Roswell and Rotary in Albuquerque. A Captain in the Army Air Force, Norman was stationed at various bases, finishing at Kirtland where he served as Base Veterinarian. It was during this time he was instrumental in initiating legislation requiring rabies vaccinations for all dogs. Also at Kirtland, he was involved with the United Community Chest, successfully encouraging 100% contribution from local veterinarians. He received recognition as"No. 1" in the professional division. Norman and his wife enjoyed traveling, with an annual trip to Mexico each fall for many years. In addition, the visited the British Isles (with a stop at Borthwick Castle in Scotland), Spain and Italy. A partner in Bolton Animal Hospital here in Albuquerque until he retired, Norman also founded Arrington Art & Advertising in 1974, acting as business manager and advisor to his daughter Jan Arrington until his death. He was also a founding member of the Animal Emergency Clinic, Inc., serving as Treasurer and Business Manager until the past few years. He was a wise, kind, and gentle man who will be remembered by his loving family; his wife, Marianne; daughters, Norma Gallegos and her husband, Antonio, and Jan Arrington and her husband, Bill Burge; grandchildren, Gary Oliver (California), Gail Oliver (Albuquerque), Robert Milan (California), Deborah Salvino and her husband, Anthony (California), and Rebeka Knowlton and her husband, Thom (Los Lunas); and great-grandchildren, Andrea Alderete (Albuquerque), Sierra Salvino (California), and one due on his birthday 6/12/99. He is also survived by his brother Stanley Borthwick and wife, Rita and his sisters, Mrs. Glenn (Jane) Bair and Mrs. Sam (Alyce) Sugg, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Douglas, his parents and a sister. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in Norman's name, or perform a kind deed for someone. Grevey -- Simone Grevey, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Sunday, March 7, 1999. She was born in Smyrna, Greece on October 27, 1917. Her family moved to Paris, France when she was three years old and she was raised and educated there. During World Wart II, she met her husband, Joseph, in Paris where they were married in 1946. Shortly thereafter, Simone joined her husband in Albuquerque where he and his brothers, Jack Grevey and Maurice Liberman, had founded the Duke City Lumber Company. Simone is survived by her husband, Joseph of the family home; daughters, Helen Grevey and husband, Jay Hertz of Albuquerque, and Marianne Fischer and husband, Ruy of Sao Paulo, Brazil; three grandchildren, Alexander Fischer of Sao Paulo and Vivian and Suzana Fischer of New York City; brother-in-law, Jack Grevey and wife, Estelle Rosenbloom Grevey; and niece, Eileen Grevey Hillson and husband, David of Albuquerque. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in Sao Paulo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Apostolos and Chrisanthie Stamboli and sister, Alexandra Stamboli. Simone was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Homan -- Ira Homan, 81, passed away March 1st, at a local hospital after a long illness. He was born June 29, 1917, at Negra, new Mexico, son of New Mexico pioneers John Edward and Myrtle Alice Homan. He grew up in McIntosh, where he helped with the family's general store, farming, ranching, trucking, and veterinary businesses. After graduating from Estancia High School, he attended UNM. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in June 1942, serving in many campaigns in North Africa and Europe. He was awarded numerous medals, including the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Following WW II, Mr. Homan spent some time in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he met and married his second wife, the former Marian Covert. They returned to New Mexico and eventually settled in Albuquerque. He worked as a surveyor and project engineer for several firms, and was particularly proud of his contribution to the orderly eastward expansion of Albuquerque. He was a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church where he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. He was a member of Temple Lodge No. 6, AF & AM, the Scottish Rite, and the Ritual Staff of the Ballut Abyad Shrine. He is survived by his wife, Marian; daughter, Mary Fuqua of Alamogordo; sons, Dan Sr. of Albuquerque and Dave of Katy, TX; grandchildren, Capt. Donovan Fuqua (U.S. Army), Laura Fuqua, Dan Jr., Victoria, Tanya, and Cassie Homan. One of 10 children, he is also survived by two sisters, Mary Alice Beans of Cocoa Beach, Fla, and Janice Blevins of Portales, and many nephews and nieces. The family wishes to specially acknowledge his niece, Jody Teitsworth who gave unstintingly of her time, talents, and compassion through his illness. In accordance with Ira's wishes, a private family memorial service will be held following cremation. Lewinson -- Leo F. Lewinson, 91, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, March 6, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris of the family home; daughters, DoAnn Jasper and Riette Mugleston, both of Santa Fe; sister, Jane Kahn of Santa Fe; five grandchildren, Amy McMillan of Santa Fe; Karen Little of Las Cruces, Leslie Porter of Sandia Park, Jeff Mugleston of Taos and Cheryl Mugleston of Albuquerque; five great-grandchildren; and five nephews. Mr. Lewinson was a graduate of Albuquerque High School and of the University of Pennsylvania. He was Past President of Congregation Albert and a volunteer at the Veteran's Hospital. Losh -- Richard Losh, age 82, a resident of Denver, CO, born April 3, 1916 in Manhattan, KS, died Saturday, February 27, 1999. He is survived by two sons, Richard C. Losh Jr. of Denver, CO and Daniel S. Losh of San Antonio, TX; and a brother, Tom Losh of Las Vegas, NV. Mr. Losh was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Christner Losh who died in 1983. He graduated Classen High School in Oklahoma City, OK in 1933, obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico in 1939 and Juris Doctor cum laude, Boston University in 1947. He was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 1947 and had a private law practice from 1947 to 1974. He was also the Administrative Law Judge for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1974 to 1984, and retired November 2, 1984. Mr. Losh served his country in WWII in the U.S. Marine Corps and in the Reserve from 1941 to 1948, U.S. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General Corps from 1948 to 1964 and retired as Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church, Albuquerque, Board of Sessions (Elder) 1983 to 1985, and also attended Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Albuquerque. During his retirement, he pursued drama and played the role of judge in"Anatomy of a Murder" also a supporting role in Agatha Christie's"Ten Little Indians" when presented by Albuquerque Little Theater in the 1980's. Mr. Losh was a member of Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Alpha, Theta Alpha Phi, Phi Delta Phi, State Bar of New Mexico, American Bar Association, Conference of Administrative Law Judges of the ABA, Scribes, National Association of Legal Writers, Professional Registered Parliamentarian in the National Association of Parliamentarians, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #461, Albuquerque, and Past Commander of American Legion. Visitation will be held Monday, March 8, 1999, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Marrs -- Albert T. Marrs died suddenly on March 4, 1999. He was born in San Diego, California on April 20, 1923, and was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelors of Science in meteorology. He worked for Sandia National Laboratories as a meteorologist and, later, as a project engineer, for 34 years. He also received an M.B.A. from Anderson School of Business at UNM. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, music, his pets, and especially, his grandchildren. He was active at La Mesa Presbyterian Church as an elder, a deacon, and a member on several committees. He enjoyed singing with the Channel Choir. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marian; daughters, Marcia and her husband, Terry O. Brown, Marie and her husband, John G. Moon; granddaughter, Mandy Brown; and grandsons, Chris Brown, Nick Moon and Greg Moon. Services will be Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at 10:00 a.m. at La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper Ave. NE (255-8095) with Rev. Kathi Hunter officiating. Martinelli -- William"Bill" Charles Martinelli, 81, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, has gone home to be with his wife, Margaret Ann. He passed away peacefully at his home in the care of his loving son, Denis, March 5, 1999. He is survived by his three sons, Rusty Martinelli and wife, Debbie of Albuquerque, Denis Martinelli of Albuquerque and Joe Martinelli and wife, Marian of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Ricky and wife, Burgandy, Corrin, Brandee and Jamie Martinelli; one great-grandchild, Tyler Martinelli; cousins, Frank and Charles Martinelli of Gallup; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Catholic Church and retired in 1991. When he was able, he loved to take his sons to the Lobo Basketball and Dallas Football games. He also enjoyed fishing, golf and adored his grandchildren. Rosary will be recited, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Maydew -- Randall Clinton Maydew, beloved husband, father, step-father and grandfather, died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 6, 1999. He was 75 years old. Randall was born on January 29, 1924 in Cora, KS. Randall was an Army Air Corps B-29 Navigator in WWII. He received a BS in 1948 and an MS in 1949 in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Randall retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1991 after a 34-year career. Randall was an active member of Central United Methodist Church. He volunteered at the National Atomic Museum and was an active member of the SW Writers. His passion was gardening. Randall is preceded in death by his father, Kermit; his sister, Edra Kay; and his brother, Bob. Randall is survived by his loving wife, Jean; his children, Jenan Gonzales and husband, Jerry from Albuquerque, NM, Randall Paul from Albuquerque, NM and Barbara Maydew and husband, Kevin Buescher from Los Alamos, NM; his step-children, Susan Wilson and husband, Sam from Estancia, NM, Steven Pannell and wife, Regina from Las Cruces, NM, and Sandra Freeman from Mesa, AZ; and ten grandchildren, Mark and Ryan Maydew, Tanja and Ashley Thompson, Jerome Gonzales, Sara and Derek Freeman, Brian Wilson, and Cassie and Kyle Pannell. Merritt -- Robert M. Merritt, a second-generation native New Mexican, passed away on march 6, 1999 after a long illness. He was born on May 16, 1924, in Lucy, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. and Rose D. Merritt; brother, Lee Weldon Merritt and a sister, Tommie J. Vaughan. Robert is survived by two brothers, William C. Merritt of Truth of Consequences, NM and George L. Merritt of Houston, Texas and four sisters, Opal Garland of Estancia, NM, Lucy Clark and Ina Mitchell of Albuquerque, NM and Lynette Cox of Renton, WA; many nieces and nephews and cousins. Robert received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico after serving in the US Army in World War II. He also completed many courses at the Geo Washington University in Washington, DC. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge suffering a shattered hip. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, The Illuminating Engineering Society, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers, Sigma Tau Chi Fraternity Chapter and The Society of American Military Engineers. He was employed by the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers for 27 years serving many of these years in the Middle East building military bases, specifically designing electrical generation and distribution systems for which he was awarded Sustained Superior Performance awards. He received laudatory comments from the Secretary of Defense Weinberger and Secretary of the Army Marsh regarding his performance during the construction of the Neger-Airbases for world peace-especially in the Middle East. He was a member of the Ewing Community Baptist Church. He attended the Ewing Community Elementary School and graduated from Estancia, NM High School. After returning from the Corp of Engineers, he returned to his farm in the Ewing Community residing there until his illness prevented this. Interment will be in the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM after a private service at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Payne -- Leonard E. Payne, 80, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 3, 1999. He is survived by Frances, his wife of 54 years; daughter, Cheryl Hardin and husband, Edd of Blue Eyes, MO; son, Stephen Payne and wife, Diane of Casper, WY; four grandchildren, Andrew, Meredith and Renee Payne and Shelly Wass; brother, Richard Payne and wife, Donna of Cody, WY; and sister-in-law, Emily Turner and husband, John. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis Payne who lost his life in action in WWII. Leonard Payne was born December 9, 1918 on a homestead in western Nebraska to Lee and Meryl Payne. He graduated from high school in Bridgeport, NE and moved to California, where he enlisted in the armed forces in 1941. While stationed in England during WWII, Leonard met and married Frances Stephens in London on September 10, 1944. Following his discharge from the Eighth Air Force 92nd Bomb Group, Leonard and Frances returned to western Nebraska. They later moved to Wyoming, where Leonard worked as a roughneck then as a carpenter and general contractor. In addition to building and remodeling homes, he designed and built beautiful cabinets and furniture, and became a master craftsman. His love of woodworking is reflected in the masterpieces he created. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener. Leonard's greatest joy, however was his family. The kindness and love he showered on them will always be remembered. Memorial services will be held Monday, 12:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Sanchez -- Manuel Rito Sanchez, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather was called home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 6, 1999. Mr. Sanchez was born on March 9, 1919 in Manzano, NM to Teodoro and Juanita Sanchez; he was a parishioner and usher of Holy Family Catholic Church; he served his Country during World War II in the United States Army; he was a Life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and retired from Sandia Labs. Mr. Sanchez was preceded in death by his parents and a son Jerry Sanchez. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Lucy Montano Sanchez of the family home; sons, Leroy Sanchez and wife, Frances, Ernest Sanchez and wife, Victoria, Bill Sanchez and wife, Antoinette; daughters, Lupe Gutierrez and husband, Rick, Anna Sanchez; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Sanchez. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Visitations will be this evening from 6:00 p.m. till the time of rosary, which will be recited at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary, on the corner of 8th Street and Iron. Scheibe -- Lucile G. Scheibe, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1947, died Friday, March 5, 1999. She is survived by her sons, Roy W. Mangum of Hood River, OR, Joy G. Mangum of New Albany, IN, Doy C. Mangum and wife, Ellen of Indianapolis, IN, Loy H. Mangum of Albuquerque, Carl D. Mangum and wife, Paula of Leesville, LA, and Jasper H. Schorr -- John F. Schorr, age 91, and a resident of Albuquerque for 34 years died Sunday, March 7, 1999 in a local hospital following an illness. Mr. Schorr is survived by one daughter, Barbara Gonzales and her husband, Bert of Albuquerque; two sons, William J. Schorr and his wife, Judith of Albuquerque, and John F. Schorr Jr. and his wife, Mary L. of Moriarty, NM; one sister, Dorothy Satriana; two brothers, Frank A. Schorr and William T. Tull -- Bonnie Tull, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1938, died Friday, March 5, 1999. She is survived by her children, Carol Smythe and husband, Bob of Salida, CO, Alvin Tull and wife, Ginny of Albuquerque, Linda Moore and husband, Nate of Prewitt, NM, Joyce Tull of Albuquerque, and James E. Tull and wife, Tracy of Angleton, TX; eight grandchildren, Lynette, Mike, Joe, Mike, Susan, Dale, Gene and Tandi; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tull graduated from high school in Joy, OK where she was an honor student and lettered in basketball. She then completed business school in Albuquerque. She always had a heart for underprivileged and homeless children, and she helped care for several children over the years. She is survived by her first cousins, Florence Hystory of Great Bend, KS, Charles Aldridge of Garfield, KS, Ruth Hentz of Dallas, TX, Dan Leonard of Colton, WA, Louise Pence of San Diego, CA, Agnes Marie Leonard of Sublet, KS and Gladys Bickleman of Washington, DC; second cousins, Clarence Goodheart of Stockton, KS and David Leonard of Colorado; and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Erisman and Irene Boudreau, all of Albuquerque. Mrs. Woelk worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers for 38 years and was Chief of Administrative Services upon her retirement. She was a life member of the Beta Iota Chapter, ESA Sorority. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia, NM. Zimmerman -- Kathleen"Kathy" June Zimmerman, 48, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, granddaughter and sister, passed away March 2, 1999. Mrs. Zimmerman was a resident of Placitas, NM. She was born on February 12, 1951 in Plainfiled, NJ; and was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kallen Hamrah and Marie. Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by her loving husband, Bruce Zimmerman; one son, Brent Zimmerman; one daughter, Kory Zimmerman; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Zimmerman and Berean Burnes; one grandmother, Marie McFadden; five brothers, Kieth Hamrah, Kirk Hamrah, Kevin Hamrah, Kelly Hamrah, Kallen Hamrah. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, this morning at 10:00 a.m. Services are entrusted to Alameda Mortuary, 9420 4th St. NW, Norbert Baldonado Jr. .DMP
