Bloch -- Mildred R. Mother isn't here today--to suggest which dress I should wear, to choose a suit and tie for Dad, to finalize ideas with Howard and Mona, to dote on grandchildren Stephen and Danielle, to encourage her brother Jordan, to make sure arrangements are perfect, or to put understanding, thoughtfulness, and caring into each detail.I guess that besides Mother's strict upbringing in the harshness of the Depression, her schooling at Hunter College, reporting for the NY Herald Tribune, accomplishments as an artist (oil painting medium) and pianist; that innate creativity gave her the ability and depth with which she handled life. The priceless old fashioned values she imparted are now worlds away; and in respect to her memory we will continue to abide by them. Mother was foremost a well mannered lady. She was also an anonymous philanthropist, and an inventive cook and baker. She and Dad danced a great fox trot together!Mom was taken from us about every 13 months over the past 3 years; yet, miraculously returned in her 4" high heels, matching purse, gloves, and tasteful petite outfits to grasp some more of the good life. She made a beautiful 88th family birthday celebration for Dad in March, in mid May she phoned Judy to reach Bobby about a jaunt to"Lost Wages", and of course, she was always there to impart her special love to us.Alas, Mama was finally taken from us on May 26th. Robbed of her dignity for the last 5 months, she left forever on Saturday afternoon, October 24th, 1998. Where formerly we felt"independent" and"secure" because Mildred was always there with reassurance, poise and diplomacy; now, except for the grace and mercy of God and the kindness of many friends, there is a consuming void. We are devastated. We miss you, Mother Dear! Many thank you's to friends, clergy, and caregivers who have shared and aided us in our helpless, lonely, lost and grief stricken hours and months. We are very grateful and blessed. With Love, Susan

Padilla -- Anne Padilla, our dear sister, auntie and companion, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 82. Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Patrocinio and Juanita Armijo; husband, Lee Padilla; brother, Robert Armijo; and sister-in-law Eufelia Armijo. She is survived by her longtime companion, Ernesto H. Armijo; brothers, Luis and Ernest Armijo and wife, Victoria; sisters, Elizabeth Gallegos and husband, Felipe, and Dorothy Armijo and friend, Ezequiel Contreras; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and family. Auntie Anne's life was full of blessings and joy. She sat with me one day in August to tell me what her life had been like for 82 years. When I left her side that day, I knew that I would want to write about it someday. Today it's a tribute to her: You told me that all your hopes and dreams had been fulfilled in your lifetime. You said your one wish would be that all of your many nieces and nephews would be able to say the same thing when they got to be your age."Life's short," you said."You shouldn't waste it being mad at someone, or doing something you don't like doing." I sat captivated as you told me about the two great loves in your life-your husband Lee Padilla, who died in battle in the war, and your companion the last 50 years, Ernesto. You told me how some people go their whole lives without loving, or being loved. You had been blessed twice. We talked about how difficult it was when you got the telegram from the war department saying Lee was dead. You didn't believe it. You told me how everyday for five years, you would go to the train station at 5 p.m. to watch the men return from battle. Looking into their weary faces you were hoping to see your brave soldier's eyes. Finally your mom, our grandma Armijo, got mat at you and told you that you had to grieve, but then you had to live again. When Ernesto came into your life your heart began to mend. Ernesto wasn't competing with Lee for room in your heart. He knew that there was plenty of room and that he had a place in it. What Ernesto brought to your life was adventure, travel, camping, fishing and hours of laughter and companionship. Your hearts were one and today he survives without you next to him for the first time in nearly 50 years. We hope the memory of all those years of love and respect will comfort him now. Listening to you tell me about your work as secretary for Senator Dennis Chavez, Elfego Baca and with the federal government for more than 30 years, made me respect you even more than I already did. You told me that you wouldn't consider yourself a feminist, but that you believed women should be paid the same wages as men for the work they do. You believed in equality when it came to gender or race. Your ideas about family, spirituality and even politics came pouring out that day, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Were these the words of my 82-year-old auntie, or the words of a 25-year-old woman who wanted people to know what she thought of the world? I told you I thought you sounded like a liberal Chicanita that I know from the South Valley. We laughed so hard that both of us were in tears. Now that I know what you stood for, I'm sad we couldn't all have more time to talk with you about working, loving and living. You leave behind your sisters and brothers who say you were the matriarch of the family since grandma died. They grieve for you both as siblings and as children who have been nurtured by your caring heart and comforted by you in times of need. They know what your life was all about, and hopefully, through them, we will hear more stories to bring us closer to you. For all of your nieces and nephews who remember Christmas Eve at your house when Ernesto played Pancho Claus, riding up to your back door on his white horse, we will miss you and pay respect to you by living life the way you did-full of love dignity and respect. Visitation is today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Salazar & Sons Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. Anne's, with burial following at Mt. Calvary.
