Quiambad -- Happy First Birthday JOSEPH QUIAMBAD 10-30-97 to 3-5-98Little Angels When God calls little children to dwell with Him above, We mortals sometime question the wisdom of His love. For no heartache compares with the death of one small child Who does so much to make our world seem wonderful and mild. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to His fold, So He picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them, and so He takes but few, To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult, still somehow we must try. The saddest word mankind knows will always be"Goodbye." So when a little child departs, we who are left behind, Must realize God loves children, Angels are hard to find.

Rael -- Colonel Zacarias F. Rael, US Army-Retired, 82, died Wednesday, October 28, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Patterson of New Market, AL; daughter, Catherine Rael of Rochester Hills, MI; son, Michael Rael of Hurdlow, TN; and ten grandchildren. Zac was born in Las Vegas, NM on October 10, 1916. He attended Normal High School and Highlands University in Las Vegas. It was in high school that he met his future wife, Agnes Padilla. A natural leader and a fine athlete, Zac competed in football, basketball, tennis and was an outstanding boxer. He graduated from the University of Omaha in 1961. In 1940, he was called to active duty in the National Guard, beginning an illustrious military career that would make him one of the first Hispanic Americans to reach the rank of full Colonel in the US Army. He fought throughout World War II and the Korean Conflict, participating in some of the most decisive campaigns of this period, including Huertgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, and the landing at Inchon. He was a highly decorated soldier, whose medals include the Silver and Bronze Stars. He was widely recognized as a soldier's soldier who commanded the admiration of his superiors and the intense loyalty of the men who served under him. Years after his retirement it was common to run into these men, old soldiers who recognized his face or his name and remembered the favors he had done for them, his lessons in soldiering, the lives he had saved. One of his former subordinates, Major General Frank A. Camm, wrote of Zac,"I shall never forget...the fierce determination with which you constituted your Company as infantry and dug in to fight to the death if necessary to halt the enemy as they were moving around our right flank during the Bulge. I believe I learned more from you than anyone else I know about soldiering and the art of commanding troops in combat." Zac was intensely proud of his family and its heritage, and his intense drive and engaging personality helped him overcome many of the barriers confronting an ambitious Hispanic-American officer. He was a student of New Mexican history and completed a degree in Hispanic studies following his retirement. A generation of young Hispanic-American soldiers looked to men like Zac Rael for role models, while the leadership of the US Armed Forces found in men like him, the model for an integrated military. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, October 31, 1998. Burial will take place Monday, 11:00 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Family prefers memorial contributions to American Veterans Assoc. (AMVETS), VA Regional Office, 500 Gold SW, Suite 2320, 87102. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.
