Candelaria -- Mr. Phil L. Candelaria, age 93, died Saturday. Mr Candelaria was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in WWII. He is survived by his son, Phil P. Candelaria and wife, Mary Jane; sister, Marcella Aragon and husband, Louie; and grandchildren, Phil A. Candelaria and Lucinda M. Candelaria. Funeral services for Mr. Candelaria will be held on Tuesday at the San Jose Church where Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Marquez -- Elmer Herman Marquez Jr., 33 years young, beloved son of Mr. Elmer Marquez Sr. and Rosemary P. Valdez, suddenly passed away on Saturday, March 28, 1998. Messier -- Thomas Joseph Messier Sr., 69, passed away Sunday, March 15, 1998, on a weekend excursion in Chandler, AZ with his family Lorraine and Rudy Ortega by his side. He was born on October 10, 1928 in McKeesport, PA, residing in Albuquerque for over 35 years. He was a retired USAF Veteran and also from the United States Postal Service. Tom is survived by his sister, Dorothy Manning of McKeesport, PA; daughter, Debbie Woosley of Branford, FL; Thomas J. Messier II of Talent, OR; Kathy Price and Helen Messier of California; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren who he loved taking care of. He was married to Elizabeth Messier for 35 years. Montoya -- George"Coy" Montoya, 67, a resident of Albuquerque for two years, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998. He is survived by his sister, Rafelita Ulibarri of Patterson City, CA; brother, Dan Montoya and wife, Marie of Raton; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Mr. Montoya was born in Albuquerque, but spent a great deal of his life in Los Angeles, CA. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a medic. Mr. Montoya was a hard-working man and worked for three major race tracks in the Los Angeles area. A prayer service will be held Sunday, 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Ramon Cano officiating. Services will be held Monday, 10:00 a.m., at Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Dia, 5200 Iliff Rd. NW, with Pastor Ramon Cano officiating. Perea -- Gilbert Abad Perea, from a prominent pioneering New Mexico family, passed away Thursday morning, March 26, 1998, after a long illness. To his friends, he was known as"El Guero." Gilbert was born and raised in Corrales to Adelaida Palladini Perea and Abenicio Crollett Perea of Corrales. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Pablito, Abenicio and Pedro; and by his sisters, Serafina, Desolina, Amalia, Adela, and Olibama. He is survived by his brother, Juan and his sisters, Annie, Balbina and Priscilla; as well as his children and grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 1998, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Sanchez -- Bennie Sanchez, 68, a lifetime resident of New Mexico, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 1998. Bennie was born August 17, 1929, the son of Benjamin and Josephine Candelaria Sanchez in Corrales, NM. Bennie had worked in construction until he retired. Schiff -- Congressman Steve Schiff, 51, a resident of Albuquerque since 1969, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; children, Jaimi and Daniel; mother, Helen Bjerke of Oceanside, CA; brothers, Maurice Schiff and wife, Sharon of West Hills, CA, and Gordon Schiff of Chicago, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Congressman Schiff received his B.A. in Political Science at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1968, and his J.D. at the University of New Mexico Law School in 1972. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1989. He served as District Attorney of Bernalillo County from 1981-1988; was Assistant Albuquerque City Attorney and Counsel for Albuquerque Police and Fire Departments 1979-1981; was a trial attorney in private practice; and previously was Assistant District Attorney of Bernalillo County 1972-1977. Congressman Schiff served in the NM Air National Guard over 20 years, and retired in 1997 as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was a member of Civitan International, the Fraternal Order of Police, was a former President of the Albuquerque Lodge of B'nai B'rith, and was a member of Congregation Albert for over 25 years. Services will be held Monday, March 30, 1998, at 10:00 a.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, with Rabbi Joseph R. Black officiating. Smith -- Asher M. Smith, 92, a true gentleman, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Smith. After graduating from Belen High School, Asher attended the University of New Mexico. In the early years, he was employed by the railroad, then Albuquerque National Bank, where he retired after 42 years as a Vice-President. Asher was an Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII. He was a life member of B.P.O. Elks and also Temple Lodge #6, A.F. & A.M. Asher was an avid golfer. He is survived by his sister, Josephine Medley of Albuquerque; brothers, Glen Smith of Kansas and Jeff Smith of Clovis; sister-in-law, Agnes Smith of Belen; numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; special friends, Jackie Grossetete and husband, Don, and their sons, Grant and Mark, and Teri Simmons and husband, Bo. Spinks -- Delphus Malvin Spinks died Thursday, March 26, 1998, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; daughter, Susan Lechner and husband, Michael of San Jose, CA; son, Michael Spinks and Maryann Wasiolek; step-son, John Miner and wife, Nadine; step-daughter, Meredith Miner and husband, Phillip White of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Brian Lechner of Irvin, CA, Kate Lechner of Willow Glen, CA, and Corey Miner. After learning Morse Code in the CCC's, he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served with the Flying Tigers in China. He retired from the FAA after a 30-year career as an air traffic controller. Vigil -- Gloria Ann Vigil, passed away on Friday, March 27th, surrounded by her loved ones after having a series of strokes, and fighting a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Dennis Vigil. She is survived by her mother and father, Ben and Manuelita Garcia; her three children, son, Vince Vigil and wife, April; daughter, Tracey Vigil and Shari Montoya, and son, Dennis Vigil and wife, Anna; her grandchildren, Aja and Vinny Vigil; sister, Mary Romero and husband, Richard; brother, Ben Garcia and wife, Marijon; sister, Esther Alderete and husband, Pete; for nieces; five nephews; along with numerous other family and friends. She was born in Artesia, NM on February 27th and later moved to Albuquerque, graduated from Albuquerque High School and married her high school Sweetheart Dennis Vigil. She was involved with the foster-care program, and helped raise four foster children. Throughout her adult life, her own children and family became and remained the focal point in her life. Gloria loved to cook, especially for others and enjoyed great food. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping for her family and for herself. She also loved to travel, especially to California to shop. She was an employee at Presbyterian Hospital when she became ill. Gloria, we cherished every moment we were blessed with you. You touched our hearts and souls with you love, and showed us the meaning of courage. We lost a wonderful person, but God is gaining a beautiful Soul. Rosary will be at Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE on Monday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m., and a Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 31st at 11:30 a.m., with interment following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Rick Romero, Adrian Romero, Brian Garcia, Mario Alderete, Rueben Alderete, and family friend, Bryan Clark. Watson -- James H. Watson, 72, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away March 26, 1998. He was born March 1, 1926 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of Walt G. and Pauline Watson. Mr. Watson and his brother Jack, owned a local cafe. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is survived by his children, Anna Kim Bloomer and husband, Donnie, Paula Jean Whittlesey, James W. Watson and wife, Leesa and Gerald B. Watson; grandchildren, Sonja Whittlesey, Taunee Watson, Chase Watson, Kaden Watson and Hannah Watson; and one brother, Jack B. Watson. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 1, 1998, 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Funeral Home, with Pastor Earl Patrick officiating. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Weskamp -- Frank R. Weskamp was born in Rocky Ford, CO on January 7, 1921. He graduated from high school in Buckeye, AZ. During WWII he served in the US Coast Guard which enabled him to attend the University of Montana School of Forestry on the GI Bill. He did his graduate work at Montana Sate University in Bozeman, Montana. After working for the US Forest Service he later went into forest industries which allowed him to work for companies in New Mexico, Arizona, Washington, California and Hawaii. Frank was a life member in the Rio Rancho VFWPost 5890 where he served as Commander for three years. he was a member of the American Legion Post #118, was active in the Boy Scouts of America both in Magelena, NM and Hilo, Hawaii, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Soccoro, NM, active NRA member and served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas Aquinas in Rio Rancho. Frank was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy and son, Peter. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary A. Weskamp of Rio Rancho; his daughter, Peggy her husband, Don Newport and granddaughter, Meg Boan of Reno, NV; his son, Paul Weskamp wife, Linda and grandchildren, Frank, Tony and Christia of Tyler,TX. Also surviving are his sister, Edith Olson and her husband, Jerry of San Diego, CA; his brother, Herman Weskamp and his wife, Katherine of West Covina, CA; his sister, Louis Rzany of Tacoma, WA; and his sister-in-law, Doreen Darlington of Ronan, MT. Rosary will be recited on Monday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rio Rancho Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to the Sandia Hospice, 5740 Osuna Rd.
